On Saturday afternoon Matthew White’s family arrived en masse at Telstra Dome for the NAB cup game between Richmond and Hawthorn.  Their mission was to watch their boy make his debut in the yellow and black.

Proud paternal grandfather Joe, a lifelong Richmond supporter, shed a tear as he watched Matty run through the banner.

His maternal grandfather, who played for Collingwood in the late 40’s, was cheering his grandson on loudly and was even heard, shock horror, to barrack for the Tiges at one stage.

Matty’s Collingwood supporting mother wore a Richmond shirt to the game, in fact she said she might even wear it to work. (I'm not too sure this Richmond supporting mother would have done the same if my son ever ran out for Collingwood)  If Matt had been drafted to Collingwood, Peter was going to wear his Tiger Tie to every game.

Proud dad Peter was pleasantly jealous as his son did what all Richmond supporters have dreamed about at some stage in their life, even just one game for his beloved Tigers.

Matthew was fairly nervous before the game so it’s good he had a chance to settle in before running on late in the first quarter when his initiation to the big time was a minor corky within 10 seconds of getting on the ground.

He was surprised that the noise from the crowd didn’t make any difference to hearing his teammates whilst out on the ground.  He found the sometimes controversial surface ok, and the pace far quicker than he expected.

It was an exciting moment that brought a big smile to his father’s face when Matty slotted his first AFL goal through the hey diddle diddle. Matt hadn't kicked many goals during his junior career so it was a buzz to see one slotted through in game number 1.

Matt set himself a goal of two tackles for the game and enjoyed laying one on Sam Mitchell in the last quarter.

Matty fronted up to the team rehab early Sunday morning, lots of ice to get rid of sore spots, then went back home to bed to rest his tired body.

Matt was rewarded with selection for his outstanding training ethic and performance over the long, hot pre-season. This kid has his head screwed on properly.  He’ll take on board all that’s said in the coaches wash up today and knowing what he has to work on will go about his business ticking off the boxes on his way to earning a spot in the team when the opportunity presents itself.

Great report Rosy.

Congratulations to Matt, Peter and the rest of the families.

Peter, you must be a very proud dad, yes?

I had a chat to Matt at Club80 the other night and he came across as a very mature young man. I was very pleased with that first goal. Hope there are many, many more for him in the Richmond jumper.

In my previous career as teacher I did a lot of junior coaching (u12, u13, u14) and this was always a big part of the pre-match address, get two tackles for the match and try to get them in the first quarter if you can. I often wonder how our team would perform if they followed this really simple piece of junior coaching advice every week. There are AFL players who would be lucky to lay 2 tackles in a month!

Good to see Matt remembers something he probably had ingrained when he was younger.

Always enjoy those up close and personal stories, well done Rosy.

Very good report Rosy, it would be interesting if Richo could set himself an achievement
of 1 goal per quarter for the season. Its not that hard to achieve when you look at it that way, if he could do that he would get at least 88+ goals. Thats of course he does'nt get injured, could be some other players set goals in a simplistic way & see how they go during the season.

I spoke to matty white last thursday at the coburg v kanga's praccy match and congratulated him on getting his first game.. He is a great kid and yes has a great work ethic. Well done matty all the best in season 2006. :clap

Fantastic report Rosy and well done Matty! :-* :clap :clap It must have been an awesome feeling for you and an incredibly proud moment for your family. Well done and best wishes for a great season. :hearton

I asked a friend how Matt's first game went for my own interest really. I really like the kid's attitude and thought he went well. I appreciate being given permission to post this bit of an insight.

It's shows a side of the game we rarely know about. We're willing to brand players duds and call for their heads yet we don't know if they've been injured, if they're following set instructions, what they're doing to get the best out of themselves.

I always wonder what the players and their families think when they read the bagging that is probably more often than not done out of ignorance.

Hopefully they understand that the vast majority here are very passionate, as is the nature of the game, Richmond supporters who long for their club to do well.

I wouldn't cope too well if my kids were bagged. I bet Joe's like me. Extremely proud of our family and they probably can't do anything wrong in our eyes anyway. ;D

Give him 12mths and he.ll be the libba of Tigerland.
Not sure if thats a good or bad thing :o ;D

Well said, Rosy. I'm amazed at how many supporters who post here or attend games have no understanding of the term. Many of our players are very young boys with the same confidence and self-esteem problems that the rest of the population has, even older players are not immune to self-doubt or sensitivity.

What do supporters gain by constantly bagging their own players at games and on forums?

Following Richmond has been a frustrating experience for 25 years, we all know that. Bagging players might relieve some of that frustration temporarily but it doesn't help the club.

Get behind these boys because they might just change the future if we do.
