Funny reading Mark Stevens’ article in the Herald Sun today about Richmond having too many introverted personalities. Didn’t we hear from Terry when he first took over that we were a quiet bunch ? Havent we also heard from Dale Weightman some years ago that it’s a problem ? When is it ever going to be resolved ?
For years now on PRE, dozens and dozens of posters have been reciting the fact that we have a less than dynamic playing list as far as personas go. We lack emotion, we have no strut, and we certainly lack genuine and consistently aggressive behaviour out on the ground. Where are our legitimate “nasty pasties” ? We get physically and mentally intimidated by other sides year after year.
I don’t expect that we should have a team of 22 Glen Archer types (although it might be nice !) and that a balance of personalities is needed, but we are, and continue to be, overweight in the subdued and calm type.
GM says that we have a bunch of young kids coming through that will rectify this problem. Sure, we may have a few more kids with some talent and a bit of voice and enthusiasm about them, but there ‘aint too many of them. Riewoldt and one or two others tops I reckon. And anyway, where is the talented nasty player ? Sorry… change that to talented nasty PLAYERS (plural). We need a few of them. Enforcers. We have none.
This deficiency in our playing group is gonna lead to some interesting decisions come National Draft time.
There’s some talk about maybe someone like Kreuzer going number one in the draft. Myself, I reckon that its way too early to be predicting, but lets just say that he is regarded as the number one player come November, and we have the first selection.
For anyone who follows junior footy, you’ll know that Kreuzer is as placid and as easy going a kid as they come. Great kid. Very talented kid (obviously). But he’s a very quiet kid on the field and just goes about trying to play the game to his best and doesn’t display a lot of emotion nor any of the high level aggression and interaction with his team mates that many of us would like to see a bit more of at Richmond. In fact, I liken him a lot to Brad Ottens in the sense that as a junior, Ottens had all the standout playing attributes, but his personality was one of a toned down, slightly introverted nature.
Anyway, that’s just my personal opinion of him which isnt important. What is important, and I’ll ask the question, is that if we suffer from the aforementioned dilemma (or deficiency) in our playing group, just how much should it influence our decision making come draft time ?
Again, using the above example of Kreuzer, would you go with the second best football player if he had a high energy/high octane demeanor with a real physical presence and felt that he could bring a few more much needed intangibles to the club that Kreuzer at number one couldn’t bring ?
Maybe it depends on the level of playing gap between the two. Maybe it depends on our other selections in the draft and how confident we think we are of getting the player we really want/need with those selections. I dunno. It’s a difficult one to answer. But it’s certainly a factor or element that the RFC are gonna have to get their head around and determine just exactly what value or importance it has to us when we do go selecting in November because it has, and continues to be a significant problem for us.
(Maybe this should go on the junior board..dunno. Its a bit about the current playing group and also the draft.)
