IS RICHMOND OF 06 THE CARLTON OF 05?

At the moment we have a number of quality players and far too many semi-useful tack-ons.

Love that phrase Bretts t , much better than the d word :clap :clap :clap

I am absolutely spewing that we didn't make the eight this year and I will burn down Terry Wallace's office if we don't make it next year. Well maybe I'll spend months building a scale model and burn that. ;D

If they're selling failure in 2006, I'm not buying. What's the sweetener? Draft picks? I don't give a *smile* if we get later draft picks for success. That's Miller's problem. I hope somebody (not Vlad) reworks the whole priority draft pick system tomorrow.

On 2005-If Johnson, Coughlan, Richardson, N.G.Brown, T.Simmonds and to a lesser extent A.Kellaway and Rodan have injury free years, that is to say, if they are fit when they are on the park, and we can get some improvement from Deledio, Schulz (inj 2005) and Tambling (inj 2005), we will improve markedly in 2006. Bowden and Gaspar are very important to us. We need em right. The rest we can take our chances on.

If Richmond 2005 had any luck it was mainly bad. Aside from the half fit core players Wallace had to turn out for most of the season, much of our underlist was slaughtered with injury which meant we couldn't rotate fresh players through the seniors or get the selection pressure through the magoos.

It remains to be seen whether a senior player or two will be attracted during the off season. There might yet be further cause for optimism.

Go backwards meekly in 2006? I think not.

BTW RT, I think you're right about them hosing down expectations. It's high pressure stuff running a footy club. What do they say about the heat and kitchens?

I think that there are some general concerns about the draw from within the football club. Plough has been quoted as saying that the draw is a "nightmare" next season. He also has said that due to the Commonwealth Games and the MGC being out of action until ANZAC day at the earliest, most Melbourne clubs will have disjointed starts to the season giving all of the interstate clubs a massive head start.

Now if you believe Dwayne Russell in the Sunday Age our first 4 games will be a real real test. Bulldogs week 1 then St Kilda then West Coast in Perth and then I believe there will be a 5 day break and then we face Lions in Brisbane. I've also heard that we are going to play Hawthorn in Tassie. So I believe that Plough is not totally foxing when he is playing down our chances next year.

I think next season will be difficult, there are still a number of yawning gaps in our list (lack of KP players, a new backline, a long term replacement for Richo, Browny coming back from his leg and unlikely to play week in week out etc ) So I can see us going backwards, not to the extent of Carlton. But we will be competitive and we (the supporters) will need to stick together safe in the knowledge that we have a football department that know exactly where we are going and what we need to do to make it back to the top.

Look TIGEREXTRA and DYER'ERE I know exactly where you are coming from, I dont like the prospect of another season without finals action, to see a very average but totally brave and commited side like Sydney win the flag, it burns me to the bottom of my rather large gut. But I just dont accept that we have got the list yet to be a real contender. I dont want us to be like Melbourne, dag around the finals for 1 week and then get our pants pulled down. I want us to be in there really having crack at the big one (so to speak). I look at our list, goal line to goal line and the depth of talent that you need to win a premership just isnt there yet. We may well make the finals next year and the year after, but this list will not win a flag.

2005 was a very even season, evened further by long term injuries to some of the game's stars. Like 1997 but more even.

Even means weak. It means that a side with a lot of holes in it can make win the flag. A side like Sydney. Does it mean tat the eighth side is better than in previous years. I don't think so. The middle sides are about the same but the bottom sides are probably a bit stroinger, with the exception of Carlton. ;D

If StKilda can recruit well (unlikely) and get their injured and aging stars on the park (unlikely, IMO) maybe we can see a really good side in 2006. Maybe if West Coast can unearth some tall talent or trade for it cheaply they can be a very good side in 2006. Unlikely.

But to me 2006 looks like more of the same. The draft and salary cap have finally bitten. Hard. And the standard you need to reach to make the four has fallen, IMO.

I don't believe that Richmond's list is worse than the Kangaroos or Melbourne. I believe our list is better than either of these and we are better managed and coached. With some luck, we'd have made the eight this season and with less we'll make it next year. There is nothing around.
