It is time to move Richo out of the forward line

FWIW,

I think that Richo to the HFF with a licence to push back to the wing HBF is the go. This not only provides additional options for getting out of the backline but he could also use his athleticism to get into teh forwad 50 faster than his opponent meaning that he may take a number of uncontested marks. Also in the wider spaces he is far more difficult to double team etc.

Its upto the coaching staff to drum it into the players head to use their heads a bit more when going fwd.Use Richo as a decoy. Then go back to plan "A" with Richo.
In other words use Richo to a point where the opposition are 2nd guessing.
KEEP RICHO AT F/FWD

As said, from the time he was signed, the significance of Patrick Bowden's recruitment will grow as the Tiges realise what their real options are for the key half forward post.

Beyond Patrick Bowden, who else?

Richo - doesn't have the legs for a full game, let alone a season.
Simmonds - he's in the ruck.
Stafford - struggles to move at the best of times.
Hall - a part-time option, if Schulz is at chb.
Schulz - a part-time option, if Hall is at chb.
Pattison - may grow into it, but not ready yet.
Hughes - yet to prove himself in VFL .
Limbach - yet to prove himself in VFL .

As you can see there are some part-time options.
Patrick Bowden is the only full-time option.

In recent seasons we used Richo to a point where our own team were 3rd and 4th guessing........ let alone the opposition  :-\

Phantom you have hity it on the head,

I think you will find TW will set up with 2 CHF's - Pettifer & P.Bowden - both mobile, both pushing up the ground leaving a hole behind for Richo
Richo will be midway bewteen the goals and the 50 arc looking to drop into the hole created by the 2 CHF's
with someone deep (rotating) between Stafford, Brown, Tambling & lids - this is how it was structured at the intra club

Personally i believe we should have Richo on a HFF and let him loose, develop a FFWD & CHF and have Richo coming in from the side with the flight of the ball at the top of the square - very dangerous

So true hayfever :hihi :hihi :hihi

Put Rodan at FF and tell everybody it is Richo, then all those passes that usually hit Richo on the knees will be chest marks for Rodan!! 8)

The last time we had an opportunity to get our forward line right with Richo was in 2002 when Sav Rocca was let loose by Collingwood.  He would have been a very cheap pick up and would have controlled the goal square and caused problems as a conventional lead and mark full forward who would demand a quality opponent.  Richo and Ottens could then have waxed between CHF and third tall.

This combination would have dominated.

The push for Fevola last year had merit for the same reasons, right idea, right player, wrong person.

At the end of this year they should be on the lookout for an experienced forward who is out of favour at his club for whatever reason.  McDougall is OK, Henry Playfair might get squeezed out at Geelong, someone like Ken McGregor might become surplus at Adelaide if Hentschel steps up.

or develop your own

hughes will come on - the more game time he gets the better he will be
*smile* is marking time at CHB until we have someone to step up there

a future fwd line of *smile* & hughes will be quite good, especially when you think of blokes like lids, bling, casserly, meyer all passing the ball to them

Agree. It won't hurt to get a more mature key forward to support them. If nothing else, a player like McGregor takes much of the defensive pressure from the loose defender or the ruckman playing across half-back. This frees up the talent.

It is actually a role Hall could play too.

I don't know about the rest of you but I personally am living for the day when the best defender and the loose defender don't automatically check where Richo is at all times.

He is now a veteran and has been picking up the best tall defender every week for over a decade. By the time he does get the second or third defender it will be because he should already be retired and quite frankly that is complete and utter crap.

Where you play him doesn't really matter too much, he should be played up the ground but then who would take a mark in the forward fifty when the going is tough. Imagine Richo taking on the 2nd tall rather than the first - what sort of a forward line would we have then, particularly with Brown at the feet. One that might actually get into the finals and do well is what.

Not rocket science is it? :bash

who indeed will take a mark in the goal square. well limbach mcguane hughes and schulz should all be tried at ff and given good opportunitys to prove themselves its called developing your own and doing the hard yards while they develop. for as long as richos been at the club we have point blank refused to develop othe kpf. we have in the main fart arsed about with ruckmen or dinosaurs all in the name of winning an extra game or 2 when its been blatantly obvious that development had to take precedence over eking out the odd extra win.

wallace is just as guilty of this as his predecessors playing simmonds and stafford forward last yr and preseason this yr.its is just plain folly.

terry bite the bullet play schulz out of the square and if he can handle the rigours of senior footy hughes out of a pocket with richo as a hit up chf. get rid of pettrified and *smile* and replace them with some guys who have good skill and most importantly pace who can rotate thru midfield and are capable of running with their direct opponent. it indeed is not rocket science. oh and terry if the kids dont do to well under no circumstances play the long term dudstake the short term pain for long term gain.

whats the point of this thread? hardley anyone believes richo should be played at full forward. everyone believes he should be played on the half forward line, and tw has already stated richo will be playing across half forward this year. we're all in agreeance... nothing to debate :yawn

Agree that unless we find our selves in contention for a top 4 spot after say 6 home and away matches..say having won 4 out of 6 .... that there is no point in playing Staff unless Richo happens to be unavailable. :-X. His position ie Staffs, should then be given to Hughes, Jacko, Mcguane or Patto.

However I also believe that our midfield is going to be one of the best around this year and that 4 out of the first 6 is certainly not beyond us. We started the preseason without expectations but with the form of Johno and the indications that Cogs, Deledio and Rodan are going to get better, I think we will be well in it after 10 even allowing for our tough seasons start. Throw in Hyde and Bling on the wings and my early tip for the Brownlow Shane Tuck, spending time on the forward line ..

We have a few problems however ,the biggest being CHF. Agree with Jack that we could play 'no one' there with maybe Shane named there but running wherever he wants.

Staff maybe helpful in the first 4/6 weeks but  after that I think that Terry will be looking to Coburg for a Hughes, Jackson, Mcguane or Patto to take his place.

Richo will play a lot down back this year. He used to go down in the final minutes of different qr's last season & was very effective. I'd be surprised if we don't see more of this again.

sacrificing my arse. did it hurt roughhead or franklin last yr clarke so far this yr or riedwoldt and kosichtzke or numerous others over recent yrs get bloody real man if hughes mcguane and others are capable of standing up to the rigours bloody well play em as the 3rd tall. in hughes case as a fast leading 3rd tall. one only has to look to our own back yard in thursfield to see how well and how early talented but skinny kids can contribute .
the way you carry on we should of waited until thursfield bulked up before we played him in the ones.

Claw, In TW's first year, the introduction of Stafford (forward pocket) Simmonds at CHF and Richo at FF paid dividends early in the year (at least five games were won from this positioning). Brown was instrumental, that allow Pettifer to contribute. Once the structure was broken, it was a long road for us.

I agree that some changes need to be made and the introduction of new players is a good thing for the club. But introduction must be EARNED not given because we have drafted new players or haven't given opportunity to the lesser known players. If we can have a policy where you've earned your time (due to good performance, etc) then we should be promoted. We need these young players to pressure the firsts.

SO we all agree, Richo should play around half-forward, we need at least one of the kids to play regularly up forward as the third tall this year and Stafford should have retired but he will probably play a few games.

That is about right as far as I can see.
