It was good while it lasted

some people have very short memories: it was only 3 weeks ago the Swans gave our backline a towling and 2 weeks ago we covered players like gas by the uber-flood: ....its insane to say he's not in our best 22

If you read my post Hayfever ::) I said aside from the Swans game and I have said he may still have a role.

My humble apology ToO  :-[

He was supposed to play but with him, Ray Hall and Andy K all dropping out we were simply slaughtered. We need all three plus JBow and the young guns all firing to be able to match it with the heavyweights
all 4 in the backline is one of the main reasons why we have been easy beats over the yrs.
.... move Rayzor onto the ball or upforward then Claw  ;D

Another 10 kgs and he could be the new Richo :hihi :hihi

"The bottom line is that the defence has looked considerably more certain in it's decision making and cleaner in it's disposal without him him there."

Instead of the above why can't we just say:

The bottom line is that the defence has looked considerably more certain in it's decision making and cleaner in it's disposal.

I think the defence has looked better because Kellaway has played well, Raines has been mannah from heaven as a small stopping forward (though Ablett toweled him up) - eactly what we wre all moaning about not having, Newman has improved as well, and Bowden has retained his own form. In other words the defence has played well. Having a stopping full back for Neitz, Hall, Tarrant etc will not be a bad addition to our team balance and structure. Rutton is the AA full back and lets be honest - he doesn't get much ball he also is a negating full back and a very good one.

I dont often agree with diggler but in this instance I do.

the game has well & trully gone past Gaspar (or as diggles like to call him subpar :hihi).

His kicking skills are at best deplorable. Cannot see how he will fit in to Tezza's gameplan.

I'm pretty sure he'll be shown the door at years end.

We lost the Swans game because our midfield was slaughtered, we got WAY less possessions, and we did WAY less with them. I find it amazing when we get beaten by massive margins, that people somehow think the defense was purely to blame. We kicked 62 points for the match and got beaten by 20 goals...does anyone seriously believe that Hall, Gaspar and Kellaway would have made much difference? Have made countless goal saving spoils against forwards who had plenty of space to work in, got pin point delivery and kicked nearly every chance they got?

It's just not plausible, the Swans had 13 different goalkickers...how on earth can just three defenders make the difference? Take Hall and O'Loughlin out completely (they would have kicked most of the goals they got on anyone but just for arguments sake) and we still would have got beaten by 12+ goals.

Anyway, back to the topic, I'd say out of fairness Gaspar should be given a fairly easy run this week. He's been out a long time and he's not getting any younger. I don't have a lot of time for the bloke - to be dead honest I think his days are numbered and if Schulz or Thursfield were available he wouldn't be playing - but he should be given a fair chance (i.e. not just tomorrow) to prove his worth. Let's not jump the gun too much and write him off purely on the basis of what he does tomorrow.

I suspect he's on trial prior to Schulz resuming...unlike Schulz, he at least has the score on the board in the past as a key defender, so IMO he's earned a chance.

Agree Razer. Like everyone else who pulls on the jumper he deserves our support. Hope his form is fantastic.
Still think he is a monty to be traded back home at seasons end.

Hopefully Freo will give us a 2nd round pick for him.

I'd be happy with that! ;D

Personally I am hoping that West Coast miss out on another premiership flag for want of a key defender.

How many players do West Coast recruit that can't kick the ball well??

Well it has been an enjoyable few weeks hasn't it?  A resurgent tigers pulling off some terrific wins, playing different styles of footy and showing we are on the right track.  It is no coincidence taht we have gained a little bit of respect in the past few weeks and Gas has been out.  He has been a great servant of the club but our performances in his absence has shown that we have moved on.  Where does he fit in?  Certainly not in a high possession skill game (see v Adelaide) or in a game where we attack more and kick 17 goals (see v Geelong).  i canot see a role for him any longer.  Injureis have curbed his strengths and he should help the youngstes develop at coburg.

Agree entirely Goose

Seaby Lynch.. There are a few. Gas is a good set shot but seems to have trouble with depth.. Anyway he seems to be getting back to his pre knee injury quickness which won him two All Aust selections and a Dyer Medal. You don't get to that level without pride and determination.

Having him come back through Coburg reserves  :hihi and I think we are going to get a fired up Gas for the rest of the season.

With Richo out Paddy Bowden will likely stay forward so we will need Gas down back for defensive structure, Joel will still be the main set up and release player out of the backline.
Still plenty of work for Gas to do in helping guide and develop our young kids in the back half, hoping he has a top game and we throttle the crap out of the shockers.

Being a good set shot isn't much comfort when he's a fullback!
The two you mentioned aren't bad kicks either, but erratic at set shots (a bit like Richo)
My view is Gaspar is a good stopper/spoiler but lacks hand and foot skills under pressure.
He gets loads of criticism due to his paypacket which I personally blame the club for.
Who here would knock back a huge wage??
He has taken a pay cut and done the right thing by the club,so the assassination for being a mercinary isn't warranted IMO.

old subpar is one ive laid of to a degree. he is still the only genuine kp stopper we have. thats not his fault but the football dept. the debate about subpar has been going on for yrs and we still dont have a genuine f/b on the list to replace him,

Absolutely spot on ...... he may not be the best back in the comp, although he has got deserved recognition in the past, but he is the best we have had for a long time.

What I admire most about Gas is he tries his guts out for the club and his determination to come back from injuries is second to none. Others have had greater skills/potential but lacked ticker and were not prepared to bleed for the Tigers...... such as  :donut
