You know I remember seeing Bowden very early in his career (maybe even 1st game) play against the Roos. His time on the ground was spent at FF being marked by Mick Martin. He showed then good poise and body use. Kicked a goal of the ground from the goal square using body position to keep Martin out of the contest & swing at the ball.

Since then we have seen him play as a Forward, (key position and flank) mid fielder, half back flanker and most recently key defender.

Now there can be little debate that where ever he plays he racks up the possessions. The interesting question is why he is seen as more effective playing deep in defence as a seems to be doing now than further up the ground. Indeed if I recall correctly in his 1st pre season with the Tigers Wallace said something like "Bowden first B&F was ok but getting a lot of the ball down back is of less value than further up the ground which is where he needs to prove himself" ( I hope I've got this right)

So the question is - Is defence JB best position or is he covering for our lack of key defender?

He was moved out of forward line because of shoulder problems at the time

He also had a big game against Carlton in the last game of the year at Princes Park that year.

He has never returned

Would be good if we had another one of him. He is the general of the backline

Facts are facts I suppose but I would love to have another player of Joels Calibre who could push forward an kick goals as well as do the same defensive role.I still think utility probally best descibes Joel.Atto I remember that game against the Roos as well played very well but it wasnt his first, for some reason I thought for years it was too
