Jack Riewoldt [Merged]

I loved Cholly and im not sure who out of them will turn out better but surely Chol has the higher ceiling. He looked like bargain bin Buddy Franklin at times and at others he looked like Charlie Dixon's hangover. CCJ won't do well at norf tho. Not until they have decent mids.

Our club is rightly or wrongly taking the stance that our ageing champs get to decide when or if they finish. The Hawks didn't do that, but they are *smile* now so what do I know.
I didn't see the Norf game but CCJ stats were 1 kick, 3 handballs, 1 mark, 2 hitouts from 73% TOG.. At what point do Norf start freaking out that they gave up their 2nd rounder this year?

He can obviously play a lot better than that. Has never had such poor stats in any game at the Tigers (other than the 30% TOG game). Was playing forward but yeah was an extremely poor game.

I love Jack and I am not ready to see him retire or be nudged out by the raging young Noah.

We have some questions to solve.
Tall Defender
More attacking defense.
Midfield needs help.
Forward line is too tall when Jack, Noah and 2nd Ruck plays alongside big Lynch.

So...I would be so excited to see Jack stroll out to CHB upon his return to action. His marking would be ridiculous when playing as a defender and his elite field kicking on both sides would be a massive attacking weapon back there. I think he could contol a game from CHB (even at his age) due to his game smarts.

I wonder if his career could be extended 2 or even 3 more years while also allowing Balta and a Ruck to keep playing forward which avoids the "too tall"" issue.

I just love the idea of gaining an extra playmaking high defender and having the flexibility to swing him forward (or swap with Noah) when needed. But best of all, we might get to see Jack for a few more years as it would save his body from the constant pounding while probably improving the team in the short term.

Backline
Grimes Tarrant Short
Broad Riewoldt Rioli

Gibcus on the bench as 7th defender.

Vlaustin to the midfield. Version 2.0.
Yes, it wasn't ideal last time.... but imagine how many problems it helps solve if it works this time.

Yep we are maybe entering the phase Richo entered where he had to pass the mantle on to jack and he moved onto the wing. Be interesting to know if there is another role that suits jack. Like Pickett and macintosh on wings already.

I still don't get why we would put resting rucks forward if we have 3 tall forwards. Send them into defence.

Nice thoughts, Juffa.

Just make sure Jackmond passes his cousin on the goalkicking first.
Don't know if he can pass him on the games tally.
Does he have another 31 games in him?
(He got injured in 2019 v Melb and missed 10 games I think, he would have been a lot closer)

He will pass him on Goals. Only needs 3 more.
Hoping he can put some distance into him also.
Maybe he can move to backline later this year, or next. (if he wishes to continue).
Never write this Legend off.

A thought provoking piece by you, Jaffa.

He's on 716, I'd like to see him kick another 34 to get to 750. That would see him leap a tightly bunched group of N Riewoldt 718, Harry Valance 722, Hudson 727, Carey 727, Bill Mohr 735, Kernahan 738, Hall 746, Rocca 748.

That would see him in 14th all time, behind tigers KB 778 (he might get him but probably not) Richo 800. If he does do it, would also make him hard to catch for Hawkins 670 (same age but should play another year you'd reckon) and Kennedy 688 (a year older and last year you'd reckon).

In terms of structure the question is do we play Riewoldt or Soldo?
I like the look of Lynch and Balta in the fwd line - Jack is one tall too many.
Nank and Soldo is a good ruck combination which will give us ruck advantage and first use against most teams.
Do we play Balta as the Ruck/Fwd? Personally I would leave him as full time forward
Soldo also showed some good signs moving into the fwd line.
What do we do with Jack?

It's a good question, but think he deserves an opportunity to see if its works in the forward line alongside Tom and Noah.

If it doesn't some structural changes will be required.

It also means everyone else in our forward line must be able to run all day.

Can't believe they are trying to rush him back.
It took me 2 months to get movement in my thumb after breaking it.
I know Jack is a freak but 15 days after surgery.
He should be the new Solo man

Tom plays with so much more hunger and attack when Jack is not in the side. Id love to see Tom with that same application when Jack is back.

Maybe because it's the Maddie (his cuz) game.

Everything you said I thought of after the game ,

Which leads to another thought , if we think its difficult fitting Jack back in the forward line ,

Losing CCJ and Marbz is not quite the problem we thought it was

Agree.

Jack definitely deserves the chance to see how it works.

We haven't seen how the 3 talls will work, Balta was down back a lot of the game, and Jack broke his thumb against Carlton.

Win the clearances and I reckon the 3 talls can work, lose them and they won't be as affective. But that's when Balta should be getting up the ground when we are transitioning out of defence.

Lost the clearances 22-40 against Carlton, won them 30-24 against GWS.

Food for thought, did our forward line look better against GWS with Balta there and Jack not there, or was it because we won the clearances?

It is always about supply first and foremost, isn't it, Tm? 2xI50 v 22 in the fourth Quarter R1 was the worst number I can remember.

The Jack redundancy debate is very one-sided atm. Nowhere near redundant IMO.

We used to push Jack up the park when we wanted to trap in the ball inside 50 for a period. He's a genius with the ball and can position near the corridor for hurt or effective defensive coverage. We've done it before. Often when we used to clear the I50 out for Dusty to get a one-on-one.

When Shed sends the ball to Jack in the corridor that ball is armed.

Irrespective of broken thumbs Jack looked very rusty in R1. As he should. This is the phoney season.

What if Noah draws a man minding the hole? And another from the side? Lynch will have two. Leaves a big hole for Jack, doesn't it? We can play three tall forwards, particularly when one of them gets over the lawn like a monster truck.

If Jack finds he's a geriatric in R16 he'll just get more surgery. It's worked for Sam Newman.

Just saw Jack's interview about Dusty on AFL 360.

Geez, he's a legend. He set Robbo and Whately into stunned, self aware, silence. Was simple, respectful, down the line and had his mates back.

Basically said 'It's all well and good to show that we respect player welfare, but now we have to do it with the face of AFL footy. It's going to be interesting to see who in the media has morals, and who doesn't.'

Both the talking heads just gawked at him for a good 5 seconds of dead air, then moved straight to talking to the Bont.

That's the way to shut down the dumb questions and actually set a precedent which will be of benefit to Dusty. Legend.

Jack has been awesome for Richmond. He has a media career waiting. Generational change is happening. Jack is not a part of the future. He should only be selected on form. If he performs great if not its time.
