I'm fairly sure the club would be up to date on this sort of stuff. It's not Old Xav's you know.

How many bio-mechanists do you reckon are involved at the AFL level? I can only think of 2 and neither have been to Richmond, ever. It wasn't that long ago that Peter Hudson drawing a spot on the ground to make sure Stuey Loewe was walking straight towards goal was considered a major coaching triumph. Things have changed with other clubs, but I have yet to hear any thing from punt road that didn't involve getting a former player like BT or Roachy to have a look at some kids kicking.

I hope to be proven wrong but I don't think we are keeping up with the competition.

Didn't we get Johnny Wilkinson's rugby kicking coach to come in for Richo? Innovative but obviously not overly successful.

Dave Alred is an excellent kicking coach if you want to put a hook on your kick , I'm not so sure he has the requisite knowledge to kick an AFL ball.

Yeah Johnny's coach did come down and have a chat to the boys, not sure it helped any one.
The funny thing about the kicking for goal, I think it was Gerard Healy did an article years ago in the hun is that AFL players have the technique all wrong.
The kickers leg actually swings naturally across the body when kicking so when AFL players try to kick straight through the ball to kick goals they are going against the flow so to speak.
The Rugby players do their wierd little side step run up and kick across the body when converting the try.
That little Pommie bastard Wilkinson was an absolute genious at kicking both the set conversion and the field goal with a dinky wierd drop kick.

Wonder if the AFL would let you place the ball on a cup and kick it off the ground. Maybe Richo should give it a go when he's less than 20 metres out.

]Pretty sure the place kick is still legal.

For some reason I am getting a flashback of Trevor Chappell & his under arm ball !

Funny to see though

Would love to see it done after a mark in the forward fifty.
Eliminates the problem of the poor ball drop to foot.
Can't say for certain but I have a sneaky suspicion that they eliminated the place kick years ago when they were doing a tidy up of the rules.
Does any of our experts or number crunchers have access to the rules in regard to this? Would be great to know how it stands.

Can't recall ever having seen an official copy of the rules, and can't find one on the Internet. It's something that should be more accessible to the public, e.g. through a jumbo edition of Football Record.

This Age article from June 2005 says "there are no AFL rules in place to prevent a player kicking from goal using the place kick during a game".

I'm old enough to remember being at the Brunswick St oval when Tony Ongarello did the last ever place kick in AFL/VFL.

After doing a Richo and missing loads of set shots he used a place kick from 25 metres out dead in front.

He missed. And the crowd went :rofl

The "Laws of Australian Football, 2005", define kicking as:

Kick or Kicking: in relation to disposing of the football, means making contact with the football with any part of the Player’s leg below the knee.

Nothing that I can see about not being able to place kick. Then again, I can't find anything about drop kicks.

I downloaded a pdf of the rules from the AFL website last year. I can't find it this year, but I can't find the listed teams most weeks either.

The Laws of the game can be downloaded from the AFLPA site.

http://www.aflpa.com.au/media/2007%20Laws%20of%20the%20game.pdf

Kicking : in relation to disposing of the football, means making contact with the football with any part of the Player’s leg
below the knee.

Unfortunately the Laws of the game aren't worth the paper they are written on, what you need is the interpretation of the rules. Fot instance, if a player attempts to put a ball through for a rushed behing but hits the point post then the umpires give a free kick against him, despite it not being against the rules. The other one is "Immediate" correct disposal of the ball when tackled-it is more im mediate for some than others.

I think I remember hearing about Brereton asking for a bucket of sand for a place kick when he was playing in a reserve game for the Swans. From memory he was threatened with a time wasting charge to discourage him.
