I really like the look of  Jay, and my gut feeling is he'll be a really good player for the Tiges.
He looks quite strong close up, really not the skinny runt we read about. He seems assured on the ground and has good footy sense.
Does anyone remember how Otto's career started out?
From memory he played seniors from the start, but everyone was crying out for him to get more ground time.
I think he's benefitted from not being pushed too hard at a young age.
I hope the same happens for Jay.  Though they are strong enough being that height at 18 means their bodys mightn't be ready for the pressure put on key possie players.
I suspect Jay will play seniors sooner rather than later.
Good luck.

Re: Jay Shulz

Totally agree about Schulz rosy, i was expecting a tall lanky skinny robert schaefer type player, but he has a fairly solid build.

Ottens started in the seniors from round 1 in 1998, he played a great last quarter off the bench in his first game where we beat Essendon.

He played 13 senior games that year I think, but spent alot of time on the bench. Hopefully if Holland can come back fit and well, Gas keeps his form, and Vardy can hold down a key defensive post, along with a fit ruck trio, Jay should be able to learn his craft at Coburg for a while, maybe having a taste of seniors late in the season.

On form alone, I'd be tempted to play him round one personally, i think he'd be a good matchup on a fraser or a tarrant.

Watching him run from half back with two bounces and hit Otto lace out yesterday was very pleasing, a big man with pace and skills, i like what i saw.

Don't worry about that DF, usually it takes a couple of season down at Tigerland before the skills deteriorate to an acceptable level by club standards.

Re: Jay Shulz

I'm glad the club didn't take the advice of those who posted that they should have drafted Shammer or one of the smaller players.

Time will tell of course, but I'm glad they finally went for a tall player.

If they didn't learn a lesson from the injuries to all our talls last season I'd be very disappointed.

Jay took a great mark in the goalsquare on Saturday that any FF would be proud of.......only it was in the Carlton goals. ;D

Go Jay....Here's to a long and successful career at Tigerland.

and thanks to ottos' back...looks like 'sarges' career is going to be unveiled ahead of time. r1 v collingwood.

A great opportunity presents itself and think Jay has the goods.... but please don't expect him to post Lloyd type figures immediately. He is after all still only 18.

If Jay presents a forward target and we drum it into some of the smaller players "get to the foot of the packs boys" there still will be goals.

I desperately hope I'm wrong, but if anyone is expecting *smile* to be anything more than an occasional bench player this season, then I think the head may be full of rocks. Sure, he might play more games than initially planned, but for heaven's sake, he's a baby.
We're still waiting for Ottens to produce the goods, let alone a kid in his first year.

I say throw him in the deep end. He can't be worse than the current starting 22.

Dean - i think you're spot on. I think too many of us are looking for saviour that is not there. The answer is for the 22 on the field to play creative football, matched by smart match day coaching.

I don't get the impression anyone thinks Jay will be the knight in shining armour, but moreso will possibly be presented with an opportunity to play.  I for one am glad we have a tall forward waiting in the wings.
This particular thread about Jay was started before Otto's injury was announced.

For the new people to this list I'll copy a post I did on the old site about Jay when we drafted him.

**************************************
I have a friend who's involved with state and top level footy in SA, and a special interest in junior development.
I was asking him about Jay, and his opinion on some of the comments people have made on the boards.

He thinks Jay is a good pick up for us when we were looking for a tall.

He's been identified as a real talent in SA for some time now.

He was under 16 SA Captain last year...All Australian U17 Toured Ireland.... was probably one their best during that tour.... didn’t have a great U18 carnival but certainly has talent.... tall forward mainly....

His father is 6'6 and a huge man so Jay will probably grow more yet. He played footy for North Adelaide.

He is good at taking the ball low, a very good mark and as a rule is generally a good kick.
He's never really had to work for his kicks so far though.
My friend doesn't really rate him as a defender.

Jay hasn't played seniors, but was in one of the strongest sides in the SANFL, which is a lot stronger comp than our under 18's.

Jay is a farm boy and has spent the last year boarding in Adelaide, so living away shouldn't be a problem.

He's a really nice kid with a great sense of humour.

Good luck Jay..Welcome to Tigerland.

Let's all just hope that if he does show some capability at senior level, that he gets a 'good run at it' this year and isn't dragged and dropped all the time.

Ditto Sipthorp.

And 5 years later, nothings changed.................................................

:hihi :hihi Redders always did rate Sipthorp.

:rofl

Redford's posts gotta go straight to the Gold thread.

He's had a bad day the old boy.

Finished, washed up,should have been traded for pick 28 & 5 years down the track supporters are still talking him up despite 1 good game in his career. No wonder we're on the bottom.

will suprise many this year young Jay.....

Hoping you are right 8ty. It's certainly the last roll of the dice for Schulz.

There is definitely a vacancy for him at CHB in the wake of Hall's departure and Polak's seeming inabilty to play close to big forwards.
Sarge has good skills for a big man as was mentioned early in this old thread. It's his engine and application that comes into question more than his ability.

If it works out it'll be a boost for the defence, if it doesn't then it's Sayonara.

He blows more steam than puffing billy when he's been in defence.Wouldn't last a quarter in defence.Tried & failed.
