Joel

Cool forum guys'. 8)

If Jb has lost as much incentive and passion as he has demonstrated in the past couple of months he needs to try his luck elsewhere - for his own careers sake. He's a talented individual who has been able to take the easy way for most of his footballing career and probably needs a new lease of life to re-assess his abilities and contributions to his game.
if he goes I wish him the best of luck!
If he stays I hope he starts playing like a man.

In Frawley's first season, he "announced" Joel as a Future Richmond Captain. Wonder if he still thinks that?

I dont think he will be a Tiger either Rosy. I dont blame the coaches for Joels inabilities. To duck your head when going for a mark is not the coaching panels fault. Its called lack of courage and heart ! Its perceived he is skillful, supporters must go to the games with there eyes closed if you think that, he turns the ball over by foot so many times its looks deliberate..
I am sorry but we are going NO WHERE in a hurry with the Joel Bowdens and Aaron Fioras of this world.
WE NEED PLAYERS WHO PUT THERE HEAD OVER THE BALL. and put BOTH hands up to mark the ball..
P.S. Stats lie, they shouldnt count the easy handball receivers like Joel Bowden

I was just surfing through some old posts and came across this one from August 2003. What is with Joel and ducking his head when going for a mark? We all saw it the other day in the NAB cup against Hawthorn as well.

In spite of his Joel's amazing improvement over the last few years are there some things you just can't knock out of a player?

Also, it's quite amusing to note just how many tiger fans were calling for Joel's head just a few short years ago.

yeah, i've seen it more than once... he's been doing it since he broke his collar bone on 1996. i remember the game, he dominated peter matera on the wing and kicked 3 goals up until half time... then he got crunched early in the 3rd quarter

jackstar... i was one of the poeple calling for JB's head 2 years ago as well

It is amazing how harsh supporters can be. When was the last time Travis Johnston put his head over the ball, or Brad Green, or Mark Williams, or Rioli, or Rhys Shaw, or Jared Brennan? I could think of dozens of players who get a game every week and none of them would go close to matching Bowden's courage.

Think about this. He had a depressed fracture of the cheekbone last year because he put his head over the ball AND played with the effects for weeks afterwards. Did you really want him to risk another one in a February game?

Interesting thread. There's no doubt Joel had a lean patch but there's also no doubt it was exaggerated by those who continually used him as their whipping boy.

All it took was a game in the seconds and me to become his PRE President and voila. ;D

2 B&F's later and Joel is one of our most important players and showing everyone he has what it takes. :clap

Well he nearly got it right.

how's about cutting him some slack fellow posters. he had a very good season last year playing on some very good opponents, pavlich brown ect. we are talking about a preseason here so get off his back and hold the judgements until the season starts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

y&b the discussion is from a couple of years ago. It's an old thread that was brought to the top again. I think Joel has proven a few people wrong in the meantime. :)

he played last year as a sweeper he did well but anyone worth their salt would do well.

Regardless, Joel deserves credit for turning his game around.

I remember it was 2004 and he was playing pretty average games. Myself and my sister were at the Bulldogs game, I think this was the game after his Coburg stint. I turned to my sister and said "I hope Joel has a good game today..." and boy did he ever. Hasn't look back since. I can only have respect for a player who can turn his career around like Joel has. It is almost like something just clicked in his brain. Up until that time we all knew he had the ability but he just didn't produce. In the past two years he has been a very solid contributor for the team. And I love that he is not a selfish player, he helps out the other younger players, which is a sign of a true leader.

All I can say is well done Joel and keep it up :clap

Agreed Jason Cloke did the same thing for Collingwood, and he is a dead set D...U...D.

Joel is a better than average player, he has the talent (as does Richo) to be one of the better players in the AFL, - but very similar to Richo, he lacks mental toughness and this is what stops them both from being superstars, when you truely need them to deliver they let you down, yet they show patches of brilliance and then tease you with their inconsistency.

Joel is a creative player who runs off and does recieve a lot of easy handball recieves, he has learnt to put his head over the ball and put his body on the line, maybe he is becoming more rounded with age, maturing - very similar to Richo - IMO

Joel has finally found a spot that suits his style & personality - loose & creative in the back half, is it a sign that coaches have given up on trying to get the best out of his potential and accept him for what he is - a potential superstar that just didnt reach his potential - maybe

but credit where credit is due, he has pulled his head in and made an effort to become more consistent, less flashy and more of a leader

maybe he is just unlucky to be part of a footy club that has lacked genuine superstars during his time and we have expected too much from him, thus putting him on a pedestal when perhaps there was no other shining lights - similar to a host of other average players that have been unfairly overated at RFC

in the end he is clearly part of our best 22 and should be supported, no matter where he plays, he will make mistakes as he is prone to do but he will also show that he has great talent and tease us for many years to come

I've been screaming all year for the team to use him at full forward in a similar role to Nathen Brown of the dogs.

You can keep screaming frickenel...Bowden aint taking Browny's spot.
