John Northey, come back, all is forgiven.

What was the story Johnny gave to the Press, do you remember Mr G? IIRC he said some crap along the lines that Richmond were planning their pounce on Sheedy, that's why they weren't extending his contract although he had another year left on it.

Betrayal and loyalty, they'll be two words that'll be regularly used when Free Agency comes in.
I remember Northey's partner (Pam Shriver or something like that) fronted the press after Northey left and had a real go at Mal Brown...calling him a bully and the like. It was pathetic.

BTW I think Northey brought Haydn Robbins with him from melbourne also!

I know one thing for sure 74, during the period of the Northey fiasco the Tigers threw lock, stock & barrel at Sheedy to lure him, it just wasn't enough at the end of the day.

Sheedy has only ever cynically used Richmond to increase the price paid for his services by Essendon, and quite apart from the fact I've never liked the bloke, for that reason alone I opposed his employment at RFC and would be dead set against him ever being appointed coach.

Northey was a touch paranoid after the Dees shafted him so while he was our coach wanted to get an extension to his contract on the back of us making finals.
Walls was already stuffed af Brisvegas so Swooper made sure he had a bird in the hand to use for leverage against us. We refused to be bent over so he left.
Just while people are still floating on air about Swooper getting us to the finals and being a wonderfull coach.
Didn't we start the year at about 100 miles an hour scrape a win in nearly all our close matches and then collapse in a screaming heap in the second half of the season?
I seem to recall we only won two of our last nine or ten games for the year and got annihilated in the game that was most important.
Singin in the rain, I'm singin in the rain, such a lovely feeling just singin in the rain.
True the season fell away although there were some mitagating circumstances: -
- Richo did his knee when he was the best player in the comp as of Rd 7 or 8;
- Stuart Wigney who had been playing great footy at CHB broke his ankle in the same game at the SCG where Richo did his knee and while he came back late in the season was never the same player.
- Freezer did his knee in Rd 5 against Brisbane when he was a great leader and tough mid-fielder like Sewell at Hawthorn (5 days after we'd flogged favourites Nth Melb at the G on a Monday night).
- Edwards then struggled due to Richo's absence up forward.

Still I'll remember that season fondly as we played tough, direct and purposeful football for most of it with a good team balance albeit made up of battlers as opposed to superstars. With better drafting from 1996 onwards, we should have gone on to better things.

Thats fine but don't then make it out to be anything but a selfish act, like DD said negotiating with another team while still coach of Richmond is a low act and yes a betrayal, he eventually reaped what he sowed. A club sacking a player or coach without due cause and not paying out their contract in full is likewise a betrayal of that individual. I've heard Tom Hafey speak about Northey at a breakfast function and it was clear he regarded it as a betrayal of the club.

I couldnt really care less what Tom Hafey has to say, he didnt want to give cousins another chance either. Back in 95 to get millions of dollars thrown at you was a rare thing, who said that he was negotiating with another club? Do you not think that it goes on with players and coaches all the time now? If opposition clubs want to make offers to you, you hear them out or at least read their offer. He wanted security and being @ Richmond he knew security wasn't a luxury. I've got footage of Northey going to the board meeting and then coming out with tears and when he was asked how he was feeling he replied 'f&Cken $hithouse' Richmond were betraying him all along going after Sheedy.

so he threatens to walk with a year on his contract, the board refuse to give him what he wants, yet he gets to have a cry because he was unfairly treated?

best way for Northey to keep his job was to keep winning, thats one currency RFC always loved.

Oh spare me. Even if that was true he's got no leg to stand on morally by negotiating with Brisbane while still employed by Richmond and then breaking his contract. It makes him as bad as any club that *smile* over a coach.

Terry Wallace ........ Jordan McMahon

John Northey......... John Howat

All is not forgiven. 8)

Bit harsh on Howat there. He was a pretty limited footballer, but he only cost us pick 97, not 19. I still remember the day he smashed John Barnes.

Thats not what i remember mate. we started the season hot then got a stack of injuries and despite that put up great fights against other top sides including a draw against the bombers with a stack of injuries with only a 4 day break. We had a great game against the blues as well and lost by about 3 goals after scores were level with about 10 minutes of the game left. Against the roos in the second half of the year we were killing them when Edwards did his hammy and then the umpires killed us with weak decisions. i remember one dive bret allison took which was a total joke and the roos managed to getup.

with better luck with injuries we could have gone really close that year. richo for example was unstoppable.

Nah we werent close. That 80 point flogging in the prelim showed us that you have to bring alot more than spirit to the table. You need genuine class.

You're right, bit harsh in the comparison to McMahon the way you put it, but a) I was being tounge in cheek and b) I wasn't talking about the cost we paid. We got him for nothing and the chips for free.

He played about 65 games in about 7 years, just saying he was another coaches love child, he only played for us while Northey coached us.

Speaking about good games I remember him playing a good game in our night grand final to against Essendon and one thing I liked about him was he played competitive/tough football.

Just a classic example though of the short term roles/vision we managed our list with that had us in so much trouble in the 90's.
