Not sure with should go-so I'll post it here--feel free to move it along Rosie!!
Found myself in Ballarat yesterday and witnessed the best game of footy I have ever seen live. Swooper Northeys's Ballarat swans vs the Darley magpies. Darley went in red hot favourites having lost only the one game during the season. They probably should have won it--save for ordinary kicking-especially in the 1st quarter when they had the breeze(they finished with10 goals 20). Ballarat were 15 points behind going into the last quarter-they had the breeze And an extra man for 15 minutes courtesy of an all in brawl going into the huddles at 3/4 time that saw 2 Darley and 1 Ballarat man sin bined for 15 minutes of game time. Went to the huddle at 3/4 time to listen to swoop and his speech was straight from the heart and inspiring to listen to(quite different to what I heard at Coburg a few weeks ago!!). To cut a long story short Ballarat chipped away and got to within 1 point as the siren went the Skipper Ash Baker found himself 50 metres out on a 45 degree angle. Any score would do--a point would end in a tie and the game would go into overtime--a goal to win. He slotted it through and the crowd(Ballarat anyway) went nuts--took 10 minutes to get the players and Swooper to the podium. When Swooper got up he said words to the effect of "that last minute was history repeating itself--I coached Redan to a Grand Final win on this ground over 30 years ago--same result-from a kick after the siren from the same spot---amazing"
Fantastic game-high quality footy-the only downside was the result for Darley-probably should have won--a tie would have been a fair result---but thats footy I guess
(PS- Ballarats 1st flag in 20 years)

WOW..great to see.
A view doing the rounds at the time he parted company with the tiges was that maybe he was too one dimensional as a coach,...............this show he isnt

Mick McGuanes team also won the grannie recently as underdogs, coincidentally the team he is coaching are also known as the tigers so that may explain the media article that Mick was about to become an assistance coach at the Tigers earlier this year. They just got the wrong tigers. ;D

McGuane was a part time assistant for the tigers a couple of years back for about 2 months. think he then went to stkilda, don't know why he left after that

So Mick's still having success hey?
Despite his rumoured flaws he must be saying something right to the players he coaches, it was a shame he knocked us back last year.

Bet he regrets it as well seeing as how he got the arse from Sport 927 soon after.

Wasn't there also word of some off-field issues with Mick that may make him not ideal for the club?

People really have to get over Northy, he was not the messiah, he was just a very naughty little boy.

I got over him a long time ago but even if it was his decision to leave as suggested by many it was a disruption that we didn't need at the time.

He may have been a coaching success in the big league had he not taken the money and run. :-\

Exactly, I don't see the point in crying over spilt milk, Northy was not right for us...the proof was in the pudding.

I also think a lot of people romantasise about how good Northy was, he's record speaks for itself since then.

There was no doubt he had a good impact on our club in a short time, but I think a lot of people have made more out of it than what it was simply because of that one exceptional year and more to the point, our lack of exceptional years before hand.

Had he given us a era in which we were at least playing finals football consistently I would understand a lot of the mystique many place on him on here. I still wouldnt' agree with it, but I could at least understand it.
