As a prelude, Rosy , maybe you might consider creating a junior section in the football section. As the TAC season opened today, and the carnival coming in June/July, maybe we canput all our thoughts together in the one section.

Anyway, the expectation today was to look at both Murphy and Dowler, and the new boys for the Chargers. Warnock and basically a completely new group of kids for Sandy. Emmett Dunne and Wayne Johnston assisting Sandy coach Gary Colling. Rohan Welsh for the Chargers.

Murphy, I found out when I got to the ground, was in Ireland with the AIS/Academy so I wasn't going to see much of him.
Given the fact it was a windy day, for 3 quarters Dowler looked ordinary. He couldn't judge the ball, wouldn't put himself in front, and consequently wasn't taking any marks. The Charger midfield is pretty much a new group of kids from last year. This year's group would have played together in the U16s but didn't seem to have the same dominance.

At 3/4 time the game was locked up. Warnock had shown that if you led to the northern side of the Oakleigh ground you had the wind supporting your shots at goal. Rohan Welsh, the ex-Carlton player and Charger coach told his players that they had to kick to that corner of the ground, and that Dowler had to lead directly into that corner.

The last quarter saw the Chargers play quickly and directly to that designated  corner. Dowler led quickly to that corner in front of his opponent. Bang, 2 or 3 goals to Dowler in the space of 10 minutes, the game was over. He kicked another later on. The Chargers won easily.

Noticeable players:
Oakleigh Chargers
Beau Dowler, 12, 192, 84, as my friend Mark Pickett said, You'd think it was an 18yo Gary Lyon playing. Moves like him, kicks like him.
Michael Stewart, 14, 194, 95, fought hard around the ground all match.
Rees Thomas, 18, 193, 81, did some really nice things but was patchy.
Myles Krakouer, 9, 180, 74, dyed blonde hair, did some nice things.
Robin Nahas, 2, 175, 65, hard worker that needs to put on weight.
Nick Hildebrandt, 4, 185, 81, good size and alot of hard running.
Sam Pickett, 28, 180, 74, son of my friend Mark, nicely took out a Sandy midfielder.

Sandy Dragons
Rob Warnock, 34, 204, 77, easily best big man on the ground. But, he has only put on 2kg from last year. Very skinny.
Tomi Johnston, 2, 174, 60, Wayne's son, did some nice things.
Joshua Kennedy, 6, 186, 86, good size, runs hard, reads the ball well.
Daniel Gribbin, 11, 188, 94, did some nice things.
Simon Phillips, 35, 172, 69, has really improved from last year. Excellent pace, big ball getter, reads and uses the ball extremely well. Reminded me of Alan McKellar as a junior footballer and in his 1st senior year.

Nice to be able to walk away from the game, calmly and coolly, without frustration or anxiety. I recommend junior football as a therapy to all Tiger supporters.

Note: I have not mentioned the name of the sponsors of the Victorian U18 comp. If they choose to no longer sponsor us, then I'm not mentioning their name.

Re: Juniors - Chargers v Dragons

Great summary on the kids Phantom and rightfully not mentioning you know who ::)

Who were the up and coming backmen in the teams - any to get interested about at this early stage???

No backman on either side to rave about, but any of the 3 tall Charger boys could play CHB given time. You find at this level that any tall kids with ability play all over the ground. Marcus Drum, a top Murray and All-Aussie FB, was picked this weekend on a HFF.

Fair comment phantom. Please keep us updated as to when and where the next matches are played - wouldn't mind going down just for a look to see what prospects are up and coming.

Other highlights in the paper this morning.

Ben Fraser, 9, 190cm, 86kg, who debuted toward the end of last season as a Roughead-like key forward, kicked 5 goals and was BOG in Gippsland's noteworthy win against Calder.

Other noteworthy players:
Gippsland
Ricky Delphine, 2, 169, 70, 2 gls, in best - maybe a bit short.
Jamie Youle, 43, 180, 80
Nathan Lieshout, 20, 186, 87
Scott Pendlebury, 26, 188, 82
Michael Heyne, 12, 185, 88

Calder
Matthew Long, 6, 181, 75
Shaun Huy, 3, 179, 78
Sam Robertson, 27, 193, 75,Graeme Robertson's (circa 1979) son, but he's lost 1 kg since last year, though he's grown 2 cms.
Richard Douglas, 7, 179, 68, 2 goals and in best.

I noticed that Dowler ended up kicking 6 for the Chargers, but he wasn't listed in the best players, which was what I thought. Got to do more than play one quarter.

What do you know about Brendon Tyquin from the jets Phantom?

Yes, I watched him play last year. He didn't do alot last year.
He's a big fellow, 193cm, about 100kg.

Didn't he have a great game on the weekend.

14 Kicks, 6 HBs, 9 Marks, 23 HOs & a goal playing in the ruck. Might be a bit short for an AFL ruckman, but his possie count suggests that he might be mobile enough for a kpp.

I look forward to seeing him a few times during the season.

Actually, I was surprised the Jets got knocked off. On the weekend I had someone telling me that the Jets were on the rise and that they were really going to do well this year. Maybe it was a slow start.

Phantom, I'm impressed with these stats. Thank you.

Two (2) questions:

Where can I get a hold of the Under 18 Fixture for 2005, showing game time & venues? &

"Jumping" Jack Hawkins (ex. Geelong) has a son playing at the moment. Is it in the Under 18 comp?

Sorry,
White bold are my own markings for players doing well. Yellow is for a player who did well who I dont know anything about and begs further attention. Not saying a yellow is better than a white, just one that needs to be looked at more closely.

Cheers Phantom. I will be very interested to follow these results over the courseof the year as I am sure we will have at least 1 early selection at the next draft.

Phantom you probably haven't heard of the two Brown twins that play for the North Ballarat Rebels, but they are two HUGE kids. They do a lot of rowing and it shows. I play basketball against them regulary and they have a great talent with that too. They are only 17 years old this year I think (or maybe even 16) but they will only get bigger. They had an article written about them in The Courier (local Ballarat paper) and they said that Football is their priority now and they want to follow in the footsteps of Troy Chaplin now at Port Adelaide. Watch out for these two.

I guess you're talking about:

Mitchell Brown, 16yo, 191cm, 89kg and
Nathan Brown, 16yo, 192, 89.

Both are the right size but are a year early for maturity in the VicU18s. Both played last weekend for NBR at CHF/CHB respectively, and neither did very much at all on the ground. Both are picked again at CHF/CHB, so hopefully they can get alot more of the ball. It will be tough, they are playing Gippsland, probably the to side, this weekend. I'll be looking out to see how Nathan goes against Ben Fraser, that'd be a good yardstick.

Yes Kaelan,
That would be great.

Besides Monteath, could you look at Kennedy also?
I see EF are playing Claremont. For Claremont could you give us a report on each of Johnson, O'Keefe, Brabazon, Boudville, DeNardi, Fuller & Richardson.
Just their position, size, pace, marking, kicking, inside or ouside.

And in the next couple of weeks, if you get a chance, in the Peel Thunder side, same with Ballantyne, Howlett, Thornton, Williams & Bower.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Phantom, firstly kudos to yourself and others for the in depth assessment of the junior talent from the TAC... watching a game and scribbling notes is alot harder than I imagined particularly when you have never witnessed any of the players prior...The following is based on 2 and a half quarters as the games kick off at 9.25 and not at 10.00...must add junior football does not receive much of a go in the local papers and the wafl web page is not kept up to date meaning until buying your program you don't know who is playing ...anyway after that long winded intro here goes.....

Monteath : mid sized on-baller on today's game is not worth a father/son pick has good endurance and gets to contests but predominately to receive skills o.k but lacks pace reminds me of Hasleby without the ball getting ability Wouln't be getting to excited about his prospects

Kennedy : good size 6"4/6"5 athletic has good skills by foot not sure if he has a basketball background but seemed to catch rather mark in saying that stood up in the last quarter after being fairly quiet and took 5 or 6 grabs including a couple of strong contested ones. Played predominately up forward with sometime in the ruck ...Be interesting to see if he spends more time in the ruck later on as seemed to relish the on ball role more than playing forward
