Heading down to the Vic M V Vic C trial this weekend at Visy should be good. I might take some notes on the better performers on the day and chuck them up,

This is the U-16 game? Following the cull from last week's games?

Love to be there but have a major assignment & examination to prepare for.

I know you'll enjoy it. I would.

The more this season goes on the more I think we need to get a better ruck option to combine with Vickery. It looks as though we'll probably end up with a draft pick in the teens (10-20 range). So are there any good young ruck options likely to still be available at this pick?

If we pick a ruck in the teens I would rather go for somebody already in the system, a Mumford type would do just fine.

If someone could keep an eye on Sam Kerridge (Vic Country) for me, I'd be grateful.

My concern is the accuracy of his kicking this may be unfounded. Other parts of his play has tended towards a Dustin Martin type.

I haven't seen him for quite a while but he's had two consistently good seasons in a less than ordinary team, the Bendigo Pioneers, which, of course, was the same TAC team as Martin.

Ahh, but there's only one Dustin Martin. :)

There are a few this year, Elton, Longer and Bolger come to mind and it's still very early in the year.

I didn't catch the kid's name but on the radio on the weekend they were talking about this fella who they think will go 1 or 2. They compared him to Tom Hawkins physically, but said he had much more awareness and game smarts.

Big kid, maybe from Gipps.

Does anyone know who he is?

Jonathon Patton - Eastern Ranges

Eastern Ranges tall forward Jonathon Patton had 13 contested marks in the 43-point loss to North Ballarat, continually climbing over packs to showcase his aerial brilliance.

One AFL recruiter said last week he would be shocked if the 197cm, 95kg player from Scoresby did not head to Greater Western Sydney, which holds the first three picks in this year's draft.

Ranges region manager Anthony Parkin said: "His contested marking, preparation, kicking, his workrate and his attitude are probably the best I've seen at TAC Cup level.

Is that him?

Was just some media commentary I think yesterday highlighting that the best performing current ruckmen have predominantly been rookie picks. Generally speaking I think using high draft picks for potential future ruckmen is very risky and low percentage.

My philosophy as well, if we reach for a 200cm + player then you'd probably want a guy who can play in various positions across the ground. I think the way things are headed, more players will be pinch hitting in the ruck such as Jarryd Roughead (although somewhat through necessity) and there will be more focus on contibutions around the ground. I still believe we should target an established ruck via a trade and if that happens to be a first rounder, then you'd want to be sure it's a player who has been in the system a minimum of 3 years. We simply don't have the luxury of waiting 4 years for a guy who may or may not make the grade.

Another big story on the Patton boy for those that missed it.
Main comparison is to Jono Brown.

Geez double hip surgery and osteo at 18. Scary the toll trying to get up to AFL selection standard can have on young kids bodies.

197 cms and already 95kg means he's in the monster size category compared to most 18 y.o. kids. Jonno Brown or Tomahawk, no way of knowing until he meets players his own size, power and weight.
