I'm ok, just a bit melancholy. This one's called Tiger Mountain Peasant Song.

Wanderers this morning came by
Where did they go, graceful in the morning light?
To banner fair, to follow you softly
In the cold mountain air

Through the forest, down to your grave
Where the birds wait, and the tall grasses wave
They do not know you anymore, more, more, more

Dear shadow alive and well
How can the body die?
You tell me everything
Anything true

Into town one morning I went
Staggering through premonitions of my death
I don't see anybody that dear to me

Dear shadow alive and well
How can the body die?
You tell me everything
Anything true

Jesse
I don't know what I have done
I'm turning myself to a demon
I don't know what I have done
I'm turning myself to a demon

Cheers, mate. I'm alright. Just a bit off. Sorrow for her, of course, twinges of what might have been, what could I have done, and a touch of relief I didn't get involved because I've been there before and no way I could/would do it again.

Didn't know you live in the North spook. I pass Croxton station (on those dreadful turtle trains) every day.

I'd spent all day in Lismore trying to stave off a strange, panic, hippy contagion.

cause the world's about to end.

and everyone feels bit silly that they didnt do anything.

Theres a bit of an absurd hierarchy around who was the least biggest *smile*. Its pretty abstract.

my nostrils are thick with tannins and turpentines and airborne lignin.

I expel things from my nostrils, driving along, before I remember there are no rags left in my ute.

I wipe the black stuff on my jeans, behind the knee.

being dapper is a pretty relative concept, especially in Lismore, on apocalypse eve.

I go to the rural co-op to buy chook food and two blokes off Bondi rescue are having a tug-o-war over the last fire fighting pump.

or are they from Australia's most reclusive bachelorette? Im not sure.

anyway, I get a bit of a pick-me-up when a friend rings me,

and tells me an enemy came to help them evacuate, and brought them a load of firewood.

The absurdity makes my day. I make a quick pilot show in my head.

I call it 'Australia has heaps of completely mental Dutch and German people who can't even feign normality, or come anywhere near appropriate, even in an impending apocalypse'

in my mind, it doesn't really get off the ground.

I go '*smile* it' and think 'before I got to the bottlo, to get my final armeggedon anethestics, I'll pop into Hogans Heroes for a quick song"

When I walk in, there's a bloke in a Kaftan with a beard like that *smile* on gardening Australia.

my tolerance levels are rock bottom, so I light the *smile* up. It goes up like its been soaked in hyrdocarbons and his lips blister as he runs out of the pub, trying unsuccessfully to log in on facebook.

I know the bloke who runs the Karaoke on Mondays. He's a junkie bush regenerator with complex views on camphor laurels. He loves Neil Young.

but he doesn't flinch when I tell him

'shave what's left of that *smile* beard off when he comes back in, and put some aloe vera on him. actually, shave my head right now. Pour everyone a tequila. we are all *smile*. the dystopian future is right here and now, brothers and sisters. So get mindful as all *smile* and Feel, feel ,feel, my *smile* heat'

cause hes an experienced bush regenerator, hes packing a few sharp blades and obliges with some knife work. Hes good on the measures of cactus juice too.

Bleeding a little, I sing

Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty-five degrees
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent, to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, let's give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent now, to pay our share
Four wheels scare the cockatoos
From Kintore, east to Yuendemu
The Western Desert lives and breathes
In forty-five degrees
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent, to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, let's give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent now, to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, we're gonna give it back
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?

Everyone raised their empty tequila glasses and cheer. The bloke with the burnt off beard and blistered lips looks a bit dazed, but he's in surprisingly good spirits.

he goes

'you know what? *smile* it. lets have another tequila. we'll probably be able to grow *smile* agaves in the ashes you know.'

Thanks Mick. The beard combustion and facebook attempt was the only fictitious bit.

oh, and me singing.

Heres another bit of non-fiction. Im about to very reluctantly embark on a 4 day cruise ship to nowhere and it has a karaoke bar on board.

Ive packed all my most outlandish cowboy apparel and Im going to try set a kontinuous karaoke kruiseship kowboy world record.

I'll keep a list of the tracks I get through and let you fellas know how it goes.

The non-fiction, non-virtual cruise ship karaoke didnt go so well fellas.

By the time they called my name to sing bohemian rhapsody, my maiden number, i had drunken at least 20 crownies and 8 margaritas made on cheap phillipino moonshine

In my head, I soared. It was magnificent

But i was told by a good 20% of the ships passengers, over the course of the next few days,

That almost no noise came out my mouth.

I got a solitary positive feedback and that passenger thought it was a superb attempt at a modern monologue pop culture mime.

The sad truth is, id gone non-responsive.

Thankfully, my kanga kara training kicked in and spared me from utter psychological destruction.

Cause in my head, it was magnificent

Kind of like a Bowie and Roy Orboson melded in a richmond jumper, paying tribute to freddy mercury.

Just to be explicit, this story is entirely based on the factual

Been a while since we've had a sing. There's never been a *smile* of a time that wasn't improved by a song and a dance. Not sure I can hit the high notes for this, but I sure can shuffle to it...

Oh yeah
What we're living in
Let me tell ya

And it's a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we'll be doing for us
And I'm giving all my love to this world
Only to be told
I can't see
I can't breathe
No more will we be
And nothing's going to change the way we live
'Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse
See, it's a crazy world we're living in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin
Is all we have to give these -

Future's made of virtual insanity
Now always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound
For we all live underground

And I'm thinking what a mess we're in
Hard to know where to begin
If I could slip the sickly ties that earthly man has made
And now every mother, can choose the colour
Of her child
That's not nature's way
Well that's what they said yesterday
There's nothing left to do but pray
I think it's time I found a new religion
Whoa, it's so insane to synthesize another strain
There's something in these futures that we have to be told

Future's made of virtual insanity
Now always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound
For we all live underground

Now there is no sound
If we all live underground
And now it's virtual insanity
Forget your virtual reality
Oh, there's nothing so bad
Oh yeah, I know yeah

Of this virtual insanity, we're livin' in
Has got to change, yeah
Things, will never be the same
And I can't go on
While we're livin' in oh, oh virtual insanity
Oh, this world, has got to change
'Cause I just, I just can't keep going on, it was virtual
Virtual insanity that we're livin' in, that we're livin' in
That virtual insanity is what it is
Yeah

Future's made of virtual insanity
Now always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound
For we all live underground

Oh, now there's nothing that we live in
It's all gone wrong
Out of the window, you know
There is nothing worse than a rambling man
There is nothing worse than a foolish mind
Virtual insanity is what we're living in
Yeah, well, it's alright...

Satdy arvo in stir and the goons let us out for our one-hour walk around the yard. Jack be kind, the sun's out. It's a white-collar joint, more home arrest than a true cage, and the ankle bracelets give us a three mile radius to roam. Merri Creek glitters and burbles. Spotify's New Release Radar serves up 2020's anthem.

A man is down
On a sidewalk in the city
He's pleading for survival
He's begging for his life
And he knows his greatest crime
Over something petty
Is being born the wrong complexion
For another's evil mind

Now there's a demon on his neck
Pushing down like Bruce Almighty
With boots and badge so shiny
Cos he cleans them every day

He thrives on others' pain
Loves to see them squeal and suffer
He won't have to run for cover
He always gets to walk away

But a man ain't s'posed to die
Without a friend there by his side
Without a goddamn reason why
In the name of law and order

And the world can't be so wrong
To say it's sad, but let's move on
Please tell me he won't die for nothing
Surely not in broad daylight
For nothing?

The nightmare goes on
The crowd are getting restless
They can see this man's defenceless
But they're shouting out in vain
He's so scared, he can barely breathe
He's crying for his mama
If only he could fall
Into her loving arms again

Cos a man ain't s'posed to die
Without a friend there by his side
Without a goddamn reason why
In the name of law and order

And the world can't be so wrong
To offer prayers, then carry on
Please don't tell me he could die for nothing
Surely not in broad daylight
For nothing?

This man's life's got to count
For something.

Such a gorgeous green lush earthy airy blue-skied August afternoon in inner-suburban Garden State. I take a bunch of photos and a few vids of bridges, underarches, graffiti, juxtaposed with muddy banks, flowing water, placid ghostly Wurrun, wattles so yellow you could make a sash from 'em, cavorting cavoodles, and walking, talking humans. My 6km loop normally takes an hour, today I take 90.

No screws around so I let myself in and turn on the footy. The lads are over at Shitsville and it's on the telly. Something to yell at and hope about, saved many a man from the short rope. Hometown decisions and flops but Marlion tells Power-Puffer to clean out the cell and we walk off beaten but unbroken.

*smile*, I'm a lucky *smile*. Walk time.

This one always made me feel good.

Walk of Life
Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler)

Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
"Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Baby What I Say"
Here comes Johnny singing "I Gotta Woman"
Down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay

He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

He do the song about the sweet lovin' woman
He do the song about the knife
He do the walk, do the walk of life
Yeah, he do the walk of life

Here comes Johnny, gonna tell you the story
Hand me down my walkin' shoes
Here comes Johnny with the power and the glory
Backbeat the talkin' blues

He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

The song about the sweet lovin' woman
He do the song about the knife
Then he do the walk, he do the walk of life
Yeah, he do the walk of life

Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
"Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Baby What I Say"
Here comes Johnny singing "I Gotta Woman"
Down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay

He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

And after all the violence and double talk
There's just a song in all the trouble and the strife
You do the walk, yeah, you do the walk of life
Hmm, you do the walk of life
