Good to see this place hasn't changed too much.
Seats still covered in that cheesy green velour. Sweet smell of pipe tobacco in the air..
So one more whilst I'm still here at 1am.

Tim Buckley - Sweet Surrender

Now you wanna know the reason
Why I cheated on you?
Well I had to be a hunter again.
This little man had to try
To make love feel new again.

'Cause there's just a few things, honey
I'm not old enough to do for you. Ohh.
And they're the things, momma
You just never care to show me. Ohh.

So this flim-flam lover boy
Found him a flamingo.
And his flamingo
Showed him how to tango.
And when they tangoed
It'd send their heart's a 'flutter.
Teased him 'till he'd stutter.
Made him so young and tender.
Sweet to surrender
And so sweet surrender.
In sweet surrender.
Ahh, sweet surrender to love.

But now you're gonna go out
And get yourself
A reputation.
But I'm gonna have to show you
Where to start.
And then you're gonna bring back
Your little reputation
And prove to me
What I could not prove to you.

'Cause I was just too young at heart.
I'm just too cold, honey.
Just too hard to care.
Just too hard, 'right
To surrender.
Surrender to love.

Sweet surrender
Surrender to love.

If we could
Just surrender
Love would heal the mess we've made.
So give it up, momma, ahh.
It 'aint gonna be no good
It keeps goin' 'round and 'round.
You hurt me.
Then I hurt you again.
All that's left to do, ah.
Is give it up, Ahhhhhh,
No, no, give it up
And surrender, Ahhhhhh, momma.

Sweet surrender.
Sweet surrender.
Surrender your love.
Surrender love.
Ohhhhhh, Surrender momma.
Ohhhhhh, Surrender that love.
Sweet.
Sweet, sweet, sweet su-rre-rren-der, momma.
In to love.
To love.
To love.

Back in stir again. Gotta start behaving myself. Hopefully only a short visit if I'm a good boy. I walk into the rec room to hear a couple of old droogs lamenting they miss their dogs, who they declare are better than people. "Der," I tell them. "We genetically engineered dogs to look and behave the way we want. Yet bring up eugenics and people think you're some kind of Nazi. But look around, boys - we're surrounded by the fruits of free will and unrestricted copulation."

They look at me with those blank looks you get from the institutionalised. I switch off the tele playing repeats of Minder and boot up the karaoke machine. Everybody groans. "Shut the *smile* up or I'll do two songs," I hiss.

I had visions, I was in them
I was looking into the mirror
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me
Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when I feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see
Who salutes, but no one ever does

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a TV
Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs
Now I'm an amputee, goddamn you

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

I wanna publish 'zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind
Mind

Paranoia, paranoia
Everybody's comin' to get me
Just say you never met me
I'm runnin' underground with the moles
Diggin' holes
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring
But if you're bored then you're boring
The agony and the irony
They're killing me, whoa

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live this well

One, two, three, four!

One of the droogs tries to shiv me but I slip him and turn Minder back on and they go back to drooling. That Arfur Daly, what a cad.

I'm going to dedicate this one to one of my all time favourite artists, who released her first album in 10 odd years this week. The one & only Kate Bush 8)

Wuthering Heights
Ignored this song for more than 40 years and only found out this week what the hell she was singing about. Remarkable to come up with a debut single & video like this at 18/19.

Also now have an insight into why every Kate Bush release was treated with reverence by 1980's music shows when none of the material appealed to me.

Amazing, 18 when she wrote it. I disliked Kate Bush as a younger jb too but over time have really come to admire her talent. I think she started to win me over with the Peter Gabriel duet.

She has barely ever toured either.

Peter G duet was mid-80s. Not even watching her in the Babooshka video clip three years earlier aroused you?:))

If this is your first night at Kangaroo Karaoke, you have to sing.
If you insist. But you're gonna regret it, I can't hold a note...

In honour of the remake released next week of the first lousy attempt at filming the sci-fi classic Dune... one of Iron Maiden's album-closing epics To Tame A Land. Originally they wanted to call it "Dune" and use a spoken-word intro quoting from the book but in refusing permission, author Frank Herbert's agent replied that "Mr. Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially bands like Iron Maiden.”

Book is hard work to begin with but rewards persistence. The Arabic-themed tune is evocative of desert landscapes, and the climactic last line might be singer Bruce Dickinson's finest recorded moment.

He is the king of all the land
In the kingdom of the sand
Of a time tomorrow

He rules the sandworms and the Fremen
In the land amongst the stars
Of an age tomorrow

He is destined to be a king
He rules over everything
In the land called planet Dune

Bodywater is your life
And without it you would die
In the desert, the planet Dune

Without a stillsuit you would fry
In the sand so hot and dry
In a world called Arrakis

It is a land that's rich in spice
The sandriders and the mice
That they call the Muad'dib

He is the Kwizatz Haderach
He is born of Caladan
And will take the gom jabbar

He has the power to foresee
Or to look into the past
He's the ruler of the stars

The time will come for him to lay claim his crown
And then the foe, yes they'll be cut down
You'll see, he'll be the best that there's been
Messiah supreme, true leader of men
And when the time for judgement's at hand
Don't fret, he's strong, he'll make a stand
'gainst evil, the fire that spreads through the land
He has the power to make it all end

That should’ve cleared the place out. Closing time.

A 5 year plan to get us out of this mess; technology driven, not taxes, not common sense, not science, not practical, not palatable. Everyone else is on board but this loser

I switched off the Tele and went to the pub.
It gets worse, craft beer and turmeric infused gin.

I strode up to the stage, told the hipster to *smile* off.
Ed Kuepper, I love you mate.

The favourite game is still the same
A world of pain with a different name
Deal me out
So slide to the right and slip to the left
A tall bluebeard accused of theft
Big drop-out
It's a good soundtrack
But have no fear
It's just some loser pushin' fear
Deal me out

I thought i'd sussed the problem too
When all good things come back to you
Big drop out
You can lend an ear and be called a fool
Some people live this golden rule
Deal me out
It's a good soundtrack
But have no fear
It's just some loser pushin' fear
Deal me out

I'll pin the medal to my shirt
And pretend to forget the hurt
Big drop-out
Perhaps because i ask too much
I can't get close just out of touch
Deal me out
I sure don't want to be the man
That has to make the five year plan
Deal me out

I sit down at my desk and step into a time machine. Smoke, steam, electricity crackles, flashes...

and I'm back at the turn of the Millennium.

Rehearsals over, I scamper under the rain out of the New Theatre in Clifton Hill, dive into the Barina and head up Punt Road (don't tell me it's Hoddle Street).

Light rain splashes the black Chapel Street asphalt. I check myself in the rearview: 26 years old, fit, great hair. Impossibly handsome, ridiculously naive, absurdly, delusionally ambitious.

A hopeful child.

I take the Revolver stairs two at a time. I'm not here to party, it's Tuesday night. I'm here for the poetry.

Front room. Open mic. Some angsty kid by the name of Steve Smart on stage verbally kicking himself in the balls for daring to have testicles when men are such vile, violent, oppressive animals.

I pay $4 for a stubby of Melbourne, take a seat, put my feet up on a scrappy old coffee table and pull out my notebook and pen.

Emma sees me, walks over, introduces herself. She runs the night. She calls it her gypsy circus. She has black eyes and raven hair. To me she is a gypsy. She's beautiful. She's a wild Bohemian. I'm a straight-laced wooden sporto nerd trying to awaken my latent creativity. In a year from now we'll be in love, but for now she goes back to her friend and me my notebook.

Credits roll.
I don't know it yet, but the movie's begun. Killer soundtrack.

I sing to myself as I write the lyrics in my book. Not ready to perform yet, I'm at the research stage.

You are hardcore, you make me hard
You name the drama and I'll play the part
It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream
I like your get-up, if you know what I mean

I want it bad
I want it now
Oh, can't you see I'm ready now?
I've seen all the pictures, I've studied them forever

I want to make a movie, so let's star in it together
Don't make a move till I say "action"
Oh, here comes the hardcore life
Put your money where your mouth is tonight

Leave your make-up on and I'll leave on the light
Come over here, babe, and talk in the mic
Oh yeah, I hear you now
It's gonna be one hell of a night

You can't be a spectator, oh no
You got to take these dreams and make them whole
Oh, this is hardcore
There is no way back for you

Oh, this is hardcore
This is me on top of you
And I can't believe it took me this long
That it took me this long

This is the eye of the storm
It's what men in stained raincoats pay for
But in here it is pure, yeah
This is the end of the line

I've seen the storyline played out so many times before
Oh, that goes in there
Then that goes in there
Then that goes in there

Then that goes in there
And then it's over
Oh, what a hell of a show
But what I want to know

What exactly do you do for an encore?
'Cause this is hardcore

Been a while my friends.
We grow older but the KK music club still remains eternally open in spite of all challenges.
A place of optimism for all.

I'll grab my acoustic & throw this one down from a Scottish boy straight out of Beaumaris.
Resonates with me I hope it does with y'all too.

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow
Feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down down down, on me
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Just let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon
It's just that times are lean
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine
Don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
On a clear day I can see, see for a long way
On a clear day I can see, see for a long way.

Now should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen
In somebody you'd known since you were sixteen
If love is a bolt from the blue,
Then what is that bolt but a glorified screw
That doesn't hold nothing together?

Far from these nonsense bars and their nowhere music
It's making me sick and I know it's making you sick
There's nothing there; it's like eating air
It's like drinking gin with nothing else in
That doesn't hold me together...

But for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin

I know you like your boys to take their medicine
From a bowl with a silver spoon
Who run away with the dish and scare the fish
By the silvery light of the moon
Who were taught from the womb to believe to the tomb
That as far as their bleeding eyes see
Is a pleasure pen, meant for them, builded and rent for them
Not for the likes of me
They're not for the like of you and me...

And for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin

O but the green-eyed harpy of the salt land
She takes into hers my hand
She says, "Boy, I know you're lying... O but then, so am I!"
And to this I said,
"Oh well."

Now put me in a cage full of lions, I'll learn to speak lion
In fact I know the language well
I picked it up while I was versing myself in the languages
They speak in hell
That night, the silence gave birth to a baby
They took it away to her silent dismay
And they raised it to be a lady...
Now she can't keep her mouth shut...

And for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin

Yes, that
one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
I played a few songs for those bums in the night
In fact I played this very tune
You said, "What is this six-stringed instrument but an adolescent loom?"
And one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin.

The karaoke lounge is almost empty. A few techno-goth refugees from the RMIT computer science program huddle around an iPad watching Tron. A squiffy-eyed oddball from art college sits alone sketching. I'm here because it's just dawned on me that I neglected to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the release of one of the seminal albums of all time, by the most innovative, creative band since The Beatles. Some called it the last great album of the 20th century, others the first album of the 21st.

No one seems that interested in performing so I'm going to do a few numbers. Ears prick up immediately as the dystopian guitar winds its way in like a distorted motorcycle engine.

In the next world war
In a jackknifed juggernaut
I am born again
In the neon sign
Scrolling up and down
I am born again

In an interstellar burst
I'm back to save the universe

In a deep, deep sleep
Of the innocent
I am born again
In a fast German car
I'm amazed that I survived
An airbag saved my life

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe.

Now to really get their attention. Forgive the voice-breaking falsetto.

Please, could you stop the noise?
I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices
In my head

What's that?
(I may be paranoid, but not an android)
What's that?
(I may be paranoid, but not an android)

When I am king
You will be first against the wall
With your opinion
Which is of no consequence at all

What's that?
(I may be paranoid, but no android)
What's that?
(I may be paranoid, but no android)

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking, squealing, Gucci little piggy
You don't remember, you don't remember
Why don't you remember my name?
Off with his head, man, off with his head, man
Why don't you remember my name?
I guess he does

Rain down, rain down
Come on, rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height, height
Rain down, rain down
Come on, rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height, height

That's it, sir, you're leaving (Rain down)
The crackle of pigskin (Rain down)
The dust and the screaming (Come on, rain down)
The yuppies networking (On me)
The panic, the vomit (From a great height)
The panic, the vomit (From a great height)
God loves his children
God loves his children, yeah.

They're hyped up now. Let's cool it a little.

Wake from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today we escape, we escape

Pack and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before all hell breaks loose

Breathe, keep breathing
Don't lose your nerve
Breathe, keep breathing
I can't do this alone

Sing us a song
A song to keep us warm
There's such a chill
Such a chill

And you can laugh a spineless laugh
We hope your rules and wisdom choke you

Now we are one in everlasting peace
We hope that you choke, that you choke

We hope that you choke
That you choke

We hope that you choke
That you choke.

Okay, the art student is about to cut himself.

Transport, motorways and tramlines
Starting and then stopping
Taking off and landing
The emptiest of feelings
Disappointed people
Clinging on to bottles
And when it comes it's so, so disappointing

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Shell smashed, juices flowing
Wings twitch, legs are going
Don't get sentimental
It always ends up drivel

One day I am gonna grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
Hysterical and

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Let down again
Let down again
Let down again

You know, you know where you are with
You know where you are with
Floor collapsing
Floating, bouncing back

And one day
I am gonna grow wings
A chemical reaction
(You know where you are)
Hysterical and useless
(You know where you are)
Hysterical and
(You know where you are)

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around.

They all join me on stage.

Karma police, arrest this man
He talks in maths, he buzzes like a fridge
He's like a detuned radio

Karma police, arrest this girl
Her Hitler hairdo is making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party

This is what you'll get
This is what you'll get
This is what you'll get
When you mess with us

Karma police, I've given all I can
It's not enough, I've given all I can
But we're still on the payroll

This is what you'll get
This is what you'll get
This is what you'll get
When you mess with us

For a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
For a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself.

Back to solo for this one.

I will stop, I will stop at nothing
Say the right things when electioneering
I trust I can rely on your vote

When I go forwards
You go backwards
And somewhere we will meet

When I go forwards
You go backwards
And somewhere we will meet

Riot shields, voodoo economics, your turn, your turn
It's just business, cattle prods and the I.M.F
I trust I can rely on your vote

When I go forwards
You go backwards
And somewhere we will meet

When I go forwards
You go backwards
And somewhere we will meet.

A couple more.

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal

You look so tired, unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us

I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

And no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit
My final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises, please

Such a pretty house
And such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises
(Get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises
(Get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises, please
(Get me out of here).

Last one.

I'm on a roll
I'm on a roll this time
I feel my luck could change

Kill me, Sarah
Kill me again with love
It's gonna be a glorious day

Pull me out of the aircrash
Pull me out of the lake
'Cause I'm your superhero
We are standing on the edge

The head of state
Has called for me by name
But I don't have time for him
It's gonna be
A glorious day
I feel my luck could change

Pull me out of the aircrash
Pull me out of the lake
'Cause I'm your superhero
We are standing on the edge

We are standing on the edge.

No, seriously. Just one more.

It barks at no one else but me
Like it's seen a ghost
I guess it's seen the sparks a-flowin
No one else would know

Hey man, slow down, slow down
Idiot, slow down, slow down

Sometimes I get overcharged
That's when you see sparks
They ask me where the hell I'm going
At a thousand feet per second

Hey man, slow down, slow down
Idiot, slow down, slow down
Hey man, slow down, slow down
Idiot, slow down, slow down.

I let the last note hang in the air. The techno-goths and the squiify-eyed arts student slowly converge. Group hug.

Bringing in 2023 in the KK club..

Forget others..what has one got in life if they can't be be true to themselves.

I love this track by Bob Marley's son Ziggy. Be happy being you. Enjoy.

Life has come a long way since yesterday, I say
And it's not the same old thing over again, I say
Just do what you feel and don't you fool yourself, I say
'Cause I can't make you happy unless I am, I say, I say I

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself

Day in day out, I've asked many questions, I say
Only to find the truth it never changes, I say
If you don't deal with it it keeps killing you a little by little, I say
Call me selfish if you will my life I alone can live, I say, I say I

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself, anyway now
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself

I don't care if it hurts
I'm tired of lies and all these games
I've reached a point in life
Eh, no longer can I be this way, don't come crying to me
I too have shed my share of tears
I'm moving on, yes I'm grooving on, well I'm finally free I've

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself, anyway ya'll
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Come on now, got to be true
Got to be true, got to be true to myself
Anyway ya'll, got to be true
Got to be true, got to be true to myself

That's a great track but this one is just *smile* fun.

Prime Accadacca. Hook this *smile* into my veins.

Riff Raff.

See it on the television, every day
Hear it on the radio
It ain't humid but it sure gets hot
Down in Mexico
A barmaid's tryin' to tell me (Ha-ha)
"Beginning of the end"
Sayin' it'll bend me
Too late, my friend
Riff raff
Oh, it's good for a laugh (Ha ha ha)
Riff raff
Go on and laugh yourself in half
Smile awhile
Now, I'm the kinda guy that keep his big mouth shut
It don't bother me
Somebody kickin' me when I'm up
Leave me in misery
I've never shot nobody
Don't even carry a gun
I ain't done nothin' wrong
I'm just having fun
Riff raff
Oh, it's good for a laugh
Riff raff
Go on and laugh yourself in half
Do it again
