Courageous Richmond veteran Duncan Kellaway has given himself a chance of lining up on his long-time rival – Collingwood skipper Nathan Buckley – in next Friday night’s season opener after impressing in a VFL practice match at Punt Road Oval on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers’ number one tagger who regularly plays on Buckley when the Tigers meet the Magpies has had an injury-interrupted pre-season due to minor hamstring and quad injuries.

But playing for Coburg against Box Hill on Friday afternoon – Kellaway played the entire game in midfield and was one of the best afield.

The 30-year-old, who will be lining up for his 11th AFL season in 2003, had eight possessions in the first quarter alone and threw himself into the play with his usual ferocity despite the low-key nature of the match.

Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison said the club was encouraged by the form of one of their most important players, ahead of next Friday’s much-anticipated season opener against the Magpies.

“I thought he was good in the first quarter when he moved really well and getting through the game was a real positive from his point of view,” Hutchison said.

“He is going to be available for selection (for a round one) and he’s a good chance to play because he’s been able to put some work in, in the past two weeks which is good.”

However Hutchison said the Tigers’ match committee would have to decide this week whether Kellaway is match-hardened enough to take on his normal role of shadowing Buckley next Friday night.

“I’m sure coaches will sit down and look at what sort of role he would be suited to do but I think importantly from a preparation point of view he has been able to get through what he has to do in the past two to three weeks and come through it unscathed.”

Richmond defender Ty Zantuck also played for Coburg against Box Hill, in what was his first hit-out of the season after suffering a fractured cheekbone in a nightclub at the start of the pre-season.

Hutchison said Zantuck was progressing well but was still lacking match fitness - which may result in the much-improved defender again playing in the VFL next week.

“We’ll have a look at him on Monday and assess where he is at,” Hutchison said.

“He has done a lot of work other than competitive work.”

“He has done a lot of swimming, a lot of running, a lot of ball touch work but he just needs games.”
