Exactly. Get the right man regardless of profile. No sexy appointments any more. Couldn't care less about which position, club or starsign he is. My only memory of Clarkson as a footballer was getting poleaxed by Barry Young on the MCG wing one day - or was that Brett Allison? But I digress ...

Yes but Hinkley & Tudor, who while coming from Stkilda (some might debate the worth of that one, but he was from geelong before that and Stkilda hve been doing alright this year)....akin to Clarkson at Port.

Neeld comes from Collingwood...like Frawley did... ;)

And I know Malthouse runs a very tight ship and has more involvement in a lot of things than a lot of senior coaches...

I agree with your principle and I don't care if the coach has a profile or not, but I'd like to think they come from substanial more success than we have had, more so than Collingwood in recent years. (Neeld started there in 08)

Doesn't preclude Neeld from being a potentially good coach, but I would put it to you Clarkson was more great from the structures/success/team he came from than JUST his personality or intelligence.

If we identify a first time senior coach it would be great if we could convince them to serve a 2year apprenticeship under Matthews who we'd look upon to clean out the car wreck that is our mental state.

Hinkley was at Geelong during their premiership year.

Yes I know, structured my sentence badly, when I got to Tudor I was thinking some might debate whether Stkilda have been successful but he came from Geelong also and Stkilda have been great since he's been there.

The point I was trying to make and butchered being...they have come from success as COACHES as opposed to looking at potentials playing careers or not considering their lack of exposure to success as COACHES.

Thanks mate, sentence fixed.

What I don't understand, is this misconception that to be a great coach, you need to be a great player.

Knowing how to win, is different from actually winning. Football is a physical team game. If you aren't physically gifted, or don't have a great team around you, this can make a potentially great coach an extremely ordinary player.

I finally understood what you were saying DD ;D. Agree totally. Thats why Hardwick is another one who should be looked at closely.

We should be looking at 17yo potential coaches... to add to the playing list.

Has anyone noticed that most great sides in history are full of future coaches?

Richmond of the 70's, Hawthorn of the 80's, Brisbane of the 00's seem to be producing.

It's having smart football minds/confident people who inspire those around them to greatness and can direct each other out on the field without relying on their coach. Quite simply, all great teams are filled with great leaders who are more likely to go on and become great coaches.

No worries, I agree completely about Tudor and would stay away from Neeld.
