Lack of Mongrel/Lack of Hard Nuts

I am not talking about becoming thugs, I am talking about hardness....Luke Hodge types! Not "I'm sorry mate, I didn't mean to hurt you" types!
The game has changed and we can't win a contested footy, so how about we change something?

Hard ball gets isn''t necessarily our problem. Our problem is hard running, skills, vision, decision making - all of the things that create turnovers and turnovers in the midfield or even on our half forward line means an easy inside 50 to the oppositoin. We actually don't do too bad in the hard ball gets, the problem is that we don't run hard enough so the opposition gets too many loose balls.

OK, I vote Benny as the driest sense of Humour on this forum, can I get a Second on that !

Have you seen the way Jonny attacks the opposition big men? An umpire last year had to go over and tell him to stop bashing their mature aged KPP captain.

It's true :hearton

Although that's more thuggery, not what we're discussing. Back to the topic.

So in the course of the thread so far, we have gone from no hard nuts to
:Jake King
Daniel Jackson
Jack Riewoldt
Jay Schulz
Daniel Connors

He might be using a little load on us, jf, but JON is tough enough. He just can't play.

And I reckon we physically beat the sheisen out of Collingwood on Sunday. We're improving a lot in this area.

According to Hammerhead we have "a couple of Glenn Archer" types. :spin I'm still not sure if he was filming for his version of the Spinal Tap movie based on our club.

From my perspective we have Chris Newman and that's it apart from Cogs.

We are just so easily brushed away from the contest it's a joke and as for our tackling.... :-[

In short we go for under sized kids with pace at the draft and avoid ball magnet and big men. Apparently it's the way footy is going these days.

Geelong continue to go for genuine footballers like Bartel, Corey, Chapman and Selwood. They also look at building key position players withe Egan, Hawkins and Taylor.

I could also go through Hawthorn and Collingwood but I haven't the time. Just look at the ladder positions.

ricky, your are on the money.

The problem is that opposition sides know they can physically intimidate our players and get away with it. We have no "enforcers" who will step in and even the score (legitimately through a hard tackle or hip and shoulder of course 8) ).

Compare this to the days when we had guys like The General, David Cloke and Jimmy Jess running around and it makes you need anti-depressant medication!

Luke McGuane, maybe Patto.

Luke's career depends on how much his kicking improves IMO, he's a good tough player in most other areas.

Archer's freshly washed footy socks are harder than McGuane! I like the kid and I think he can play but seriously....
Who in that 22 on Sunday is capable of breaking a pack open, laying a hard shephard or knocking someone on their ass and rubbing their face in the dirt? Bring back Scott Turner...
Anyone that thinks that we physically knocked Collingwood around on Sunday is in a dream world, not only did they knock us on our asses over and over, they shrugged off our weak tackles and beat us in numbers to every contest.

What about Patto.....i loved when Wood kicked a goal on him in the last quarter.....Patto threw the mouthguard, then at the next bounce just full on charged Wood :hihi

I still have big question marks over Adam and his exact role for the future as i dont believe he actually is ideally suited to a specific position at AFL level, with second ruck resting forward being just about it at the moment i reckon, BUT.

The kid does put in and contests well, gets dirty and has a go at it, no one can deny him that and while he does that he has my support to play in the Tigers side.

Shame most of his team mates and some so called decorated mates dont.

Keep up the effort i say well done to the kid, its this type of effort that will give Adam the chance to improve and make a fist of AFL footy.

I liked Rimau's equalling him to the 2008 version of Paddy Guinane.

The only player I think has a hard edge to him apart from Kingy is Matt White.

We get killed in this area. That's why I like Jacko and King so mcuh

Does anyone have any input on Cotchin / Rance / Putt / Gourdis in relation to hardness/white line fever at a junior level?
