Ladder for 2009

Good post, Hawthorn certainly are looking very ominous but things can change very quickly in football. I will say on their structure/list building they appear (too early to judge but just from signs) to be building a really strong retention culture at the club and they have penty of room to move in the salary cap.

They have done things very well, but the mental/injury side can strike down any great team and they are still young and that can be unreliable. Look at the Baby Bombers after they won their premiership. There was hardly a series of them after that.

I'll be interested to see how Franklin performs mentally too.

Yeah, good point about the Bombers, next year they didn't make the finals and the year after.... well I'm sure we all remember that

1. GEELONG (Still the best team going)
2. HAWTHORN (Were lucky last year and rely too much on one player)
3. COLLINGWOOD (Will improve but won't challenge)
4. BULLDOGS (Very good at Telstra Dome, but lack KPPs fo rthe MCG)
5. RICHMOND (Have the right team balance to challenge)
6. ST.KILDA (Not enough good players to be consistent)
7. CARLTON (Have cheated there way back)
8. PORT ADELAIDE (Are better than where they finished last year)
9. ADELAIDE (Need more time to blood new players)
10.WEST COAST (On their way back)
11.ESSENDON (Ditto)
12.BRISBANE (Need more time)
13.SYDNEY (Need to rebuild)
14.KANGAROOS (Had a lot of luck in 2008. Can't happen again.)
15.FREMANTLE (Basket case)
16.MELBOURNE (One more year)

6. Richmond

16. Collingwood (a girl can dream).

The order of the rest of the ladder? I have no idea!

TigerBob, I can really understand your sentiments but they have just about the slowest midfield of all the top 8 sides.

Pure myth. Of last year's final eight sides, the Hawk midfield could only be deemed "slow" in comparison to the Bulldogs. With Ellis set for a midfield switch, and Whitecross likely to be moved in there as well, its hardly likely to slow down much either. At any rate, Hawthorn have the fittest midfield in the competition, and are in the top two for hardness and smarts; and the top four for skills.

I think they can be exposed and I just think everything went to plan last year and it just fell in their lap.

Every team in the competition can be 'exposed' on any given day. Hawthorn's 17-5 home and away record is superior to many premiership sides across history and their overall finals series was exceptional, which hardly equates to having the title 'fall into the lap'. Not many sides complete a season having beaten every other team in the league, either.

We killed them in round 20 with a gameplan all teams should implement against them- play on at all costs and run, run, run.

Richmond had a great day in round 20, but a 29pt win with one less scoring shot hardly equates to a 'killing'. The Bulldogs beat us more impressively playing this way, as did St Kilda, but that didn't seem to count for much when the heat was on in September. I wouldn't be reading too much into a one off win at this stage.

Sitting at the GF, Geelong SHOULD have really walloped them but bad kicking cost them dearly.

Geelong were on top for one of three quarters. Hawthorn would have been disappointed not to have been a couple of goals up on balance of play at quarter time, and despite having unexpected structural problems to cope with in the second half were clearly better than Geelong. Were it not for some 'intriguing' umpiring adjudications the final margin would have been a good deal larger than it was.

1. Geelong - nothing need be said.
2. Bulldogs - will take another small step
3. Hawthorn - very even side, will probably play in the GF
4. Adelaide - once again very solid, good even list although premiership door is closing
5. Richmond - improvers, one of the better midfields in the comp. Cuz will help but youth development still the key. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
6. St.Kilda - will win a few, provided injury list is small. Premiership door closing fast
7. Carlton - improvers, another very good midfield brigade. Judd = success.
8. Kangaroos - will slide this year, but bounce back in 2010. Good pool of talented youths.
9. Port Adelaide - Ordinary 2008, but still not top 8 material.
10. Sydney - too slow. You know your list sucks when you draft Ryce Shaw
11. Fremantle - large gaps in their list, need to stick to a youth policy
12. Essendon - good young side, too early for chocolates in 2009
13. Collingwood - been punching above their weight, list will be found wanting in 2009
14. Brisbane Lions - new coach, rebuilding.
15. West Coast - you can't lose Judd & Cousins and not require a rebuild.
16. Melbourne - won't trouble the scorers this year. Major rebuild required.

1. Geelong
2. Hawthorn Clear the best 2 sides at the minute!!

3. Bulldogs
4. Adelaide
5. St Kilda
6. Collingwood
7. Richmond
8. Carlton

9. Brisbane
10.Sydney
11.Port
12.North
13.West Coast
14.Fremantle
15.Essendon
16.Melbourne

Hawthorn are too professionally run for me to think about the "what if's" people are throwing up.

Reality says they have a fantastic list with some young guns coming through. We can assume the young kids they talk about ie. Tuck, Whitecross, Muston, Bailey, Thorpe, Dowler etc will be at least respectable players with the knowledge of their recent drafting exploits and of course Pelchen.

Even with a less performed Home and Away record, this Hawthorn team is built for finals football. The only team that can stop them is Geelong and the only factors is a huge injury list.

MY LADDER AFTER THE HOME AND AWAY

Geelong - Looking for revenge.
Hawthorn - Still in the clear top two teams
Port Adelaide - Massive improvers, have a fantastic midfield will bounce back
Western Bulldogs - Classy team but lack something
Collingwood - Most even team in the comp, just hard workers
Richmond - Finally Finals Football, young team on the improve
St.Kilda - Meh, the Saints are dangerous, possess some weapons
Brisbane - Word out of Brissy is Vossy has them pumped, have a good list, ready for improvement.
--------------------
Adelaide - Solid team will lack that extra punch
Carlton - They will still think they are gods gift to football, but have a *smile* backline and only Fev to kick goals.
West Coast - Improving, next year finals no doubt for the best run club in the land
Kangaroos - Decline, but nervous about saying that, just too many teams likely to improve
Essendon - Will perform the same as last year, improving though, decent young list
Sydney - Decline, decline, decline. How old can you go?
Fremantle - *smile* coach, *smile* colours, *smile* song, *smile* draft, *smile* delistings, *smile* list, only Pav.
Melbourne - Just plain *smile* but they know it and want it that way for more young kids.

Yes we can only dream of this. But with Collingwood's easy draw like always they will make finals. :(

Ill have a crack...

1 - Hawthorn
2 - Geelong
3 - Bulldogs
4 - Collingwood
5 - St. Kilda
6 - Richmond
7 - Carlton
8 - Brisbane

9 - Adelaide
10 - Kangaroos
11 - West Coast
12 - Sydney
13 - Port Adelaide
14 - Fremantle
15 - Essendon
16 - Melbourne

i'm not gonna pick the ladder because it's an impossible job, so instead i'm gonna give an estimate

Adelaide: 4-7 (consistant)
Brisbane: 11-14 (will realise they've overated their list, plus Voss needs time to settle in)
Carlton: 10-13 (overated... they have a midfield, a full forward. nothing else. will get shut down a lot.)
Collingwood 5-8 (honest group, will challenge in a few years)
Essendon 10-13 (have good list of kids but have concerns about their legspeed)
Footscray 4-7 (won't win a flag with this list)
Fremantle 9-15 (could finish in any position outside the 8, bottom 4 more realistic)
Geelong 1-2 (still the team to beat)
Hawthorn 2-4 (hope they flop but cant see it)
Melbourne 14-16 (their kids enthusiasm will win few early, but will lose their last 10 games to gaurentee the priority pick)
North Melbourne 6-9 (people continue to underestimate the quality of their kids)
Port Adelaide 8-11 (played above themselves in 07, played below themselves in 08, will finish somewhere in between)
Richmond 6-9 (should be our year for finals, but we have a tricky draw early and things could easily go pear-shaped)
St Kilda 8-11 (overated... did a bradbury last year and undeservingly fell into 4th)
Sydney 11-14 (getting rhyce shaw to add some leg speed shows they are delusional)
West Coast 14-16 (i hope they win enough games to avoid a priority pick because they will be back up there in a couple of years)
