Warning: This thread contains useless & somewhat obvious data and is for a trivial reference only.

Been wondering for some time now how clubs compare on the nitty gitty, as in going out and winning as much games as possible. The base enjoyment factor for their supporters if you will. How many times do sides go out on the field and come back with a win.

Stripping away all the reasons and merely concentrating on win/loss, what sides have been value for money to support over the last 12 years?

Obviously the only true way to judge on field success is premierships, nothing else matters. However I wanted to have a look at value for money if you will in a normal home and away season, that period that most controls the highs and lows of passionate footy fans.

So the ladder I assembled below works on a a few simple factors...

1) Covers the last 12 full seasons (1997 was the first season where all 16 teams currently in the comp existed and there were 22 games in a seasons)

2) Only home and away games (Only fair way to look at the base level, people can obviously see the more successful finals sides)

3) Draws mess things up a bit but are thankfully scarce, we have only had two seasons out of the last 12 where there were no draws in a season, but there are generally only 1-3 in a season at most. In the case of draws i have still given a side half a game so if after 12 seasons, a side has played in 4 draws I have added 2 to their wins. Everyone has different feelings on draws but in fitting with the afl definition of it being a half win i have recognised that in a sides win/loss tally.

So over the last 12 seasons based purely on home and away games played a ladder would look like...
TEAM Games Won/Played Win Record
1. Geelong 150.5/264 57%
2. Port Adelaide 150/264 56.8%
3. Sydney 149.5/264 56.6%
4. Adelaide 149/264 56.4%
5. Nth Melb 148/264 56%
6. Brisbane 145.5/264 55.1%
7. Essendon 144/264 54.5%
8. West Coast 139.5/264 52.8%
9. Bulldogs 133.5/264 50.5%
10. StKilda 129.5/264 49%
11. Hawthorn 122.5/264 46.4%
12. Collingwood 119/264 45%
13. Melbourne 112.5/264 42.4%
14. Richmond 111/264 42%
15. Fremantle 108/264 40.9%
16. Carlton 100/264 37.8%

(Apologies for the columns out of alingment, haven't mastered the tables thing yet.)

Nice work DD. It's a sad state of affairs but it makes me feel just a pinch better to see the Blues below the Tigers and the RFC of the West (aka Freo).

The only bit that gives a glimmer of hope is the Hawthorn numbers - they've won on average a game more per year than us but have a flag in the bag. If you consider they have won 15 more games in the last 2 H&A seasons it shows they were behind us in 2006 and how quick things can be turned around if you get the right people on and off the field.

Any ladder that has Carlton holding up the competition is always a good sight IMO...thanks DD, you made my day!!

Man! I was just thinking along these same lines the other day, but couldn't be stuffed churning through old data, and also it was an obvious excercise in pain knowing the outcame would make poor reading...

I was going to look at a graph of ladder position for every team (home and away) over the last 25 years to see what the ups and downs looked like just to make the horrible point that we pretty much just had downs and every other team enjoyed some up cycles...in the end it was too depressing to contemplate.

as that song goes on the MediBank ad ..... I feel better now!

I love seeing those Blue stinkers at the bottom - bottom feeders - bottom dwellers - just bottoms :-X

I'm surprised Collingwood have only won a handful more games than us with two GF appearances in there.
Just goes to show that the one Premiership in 50 years is no fluke :)

Damn, am I that transparent?. You guys can see right through me. Just my empty way of getting back at Carlton. Made me forget the pain for all of 5 mins and put a smile on my dial. 8)

Well said. No club is unsalvageable, you just have to get the right people into place and things can turn around quickly.

Fair point, but I've lost confidence in the Wallace Administration.

I also have a "worthless stat:

In 1991, Hawthorn lost to Adelaide by 86 points in Round 1.

In 1987, Carlton lost to Hawthorn by 45 points in Round 1.

In 1975, North lost to Hawthorn by 29 points in Round 1.

In 1974, Richmond lost to Hawthorn by 16 points in Round 1.

All those losing clubs went on to win the flag that year.

Soooo....not over yet boys and girls! ;)

42% win record. How many of those games won were against sides who played in the finals?
That should give you a better idea how well we have been travelling in the past 12 years.

Ask Pharace, he would be happy to research that for you. >:D

I keep going back to 2006. Round 1 the Bombers knocked off Sydney but then lost their next 14 games while Sydney went on to play in the GF. In Round 1 we lost to the bullies by 112 points but they went on to finish 8th and we finished 9th.

The season's got a long way to go yet.

It's deceptive to take single games in isolation. Ladder positions for these first round losers in the previous year -

1990 Hawthorn #1
1986 Carlton #5
1974 North #2
1973 Richmond #2

and for Tiger Opinion

2005 Sydney #3

Bit different to our situation.
