I saw Benny post this on BigFooty and thought he was right.

Why can't Deledio stand up? My wife and I have been waiting to see him explode for almost four years now. I saw him at his first training session at the club, and Beth and I both knew then and there that he was one of the most talented players in the competition, but he just seems to take things for granted these days?

What do we need to do to make him replicate what Franklin and Roghead have done at the Dawks? They're #1 ans #3 on the ******' goal-kicking list this year for goodness sake ...

Maybe Lids would explode if he were played in the right position for once in a lifetime. Terry Wallace is a pathetic tactician and has no clue of what to do. Instead of playing Polak as a loose man, stick him where he best fits at centre half back. Instead of playing McMahon in the forward line, set him up as a rebounder of the half backline. Instead of playing Deledio at full forward, put him in the centre of the ground where he can use his outstanding foot skills. Notice how whenever Deledio gets the ball, he hits a teammate lace out on the chest. Oh, and finally, instead of bringing Tivendale off the interchange bench, don't play him at all.

Very good point. I don't think Deledio is ready (yet) to play in the midfield (though he probably would have been if he was put there a few years ago) - but I think he could be a great player if blooded on the wing.

Rest of 2008 - 1/2 Wing, 1/2 Midfield

2009 -> 100% Midfield

No more stints in the forward line.

Brett Deledio is;

1st in handballs
2nd in contested possesions
2nd in bounces
3rd in first possesions
3rd in total disposals
3rd in goals
5th in tackles
5th in long kicks

In fact just about the only stat I could find where he dropped outside the top 10 for the team is in total errors where he was ranked 19th! What else do you want him to do at the moment?

For my money he would be leading the B&F by the length of the G at the moment. The only problem we have with Delidio is that he is trying to do everything, and making a pretty good fist of it too. If we had a few more of him we wouldn't be in the shocking situation we are in.

Buddy is a freak so that would be a tough decision, but I would take Lids over Roughhead or any other in the 04 draft in a heartbeat. In a half decent team Delidio would be leading the brownlow this year.

My advice would be to steer clear of Big Footy, when stats are so easily available these days it is criminal to criticise a player without first watching the game and then checking the stats.

Deledio is going fine. He's just unfortunate he's playing with so many duds.

You may disagree but when someone of his talent gets those kind of stats then he should be one of the elite players in the comp.

Instead he's getting 24 and 26 possies and not having the impact we would like. Is he currently shredding teams apart with his pure ability and talent? No.

The point is, during the pre season Wallace challenged players like Deledio, Tambling, Polo etc to have an impact on games. They are not having much of an impact, simple as that.

So there has to be a problem somewhere. I hope it is fixable and it probably is.

The problem is benny that they are under so much scrutiny because of the ineptitude of the guys around them.
They carry an unfair weight of expectation because the senior players are shithouse.
Throw Lids into Hawthorn atm and see how he goes. Tambling would probably be tearing it up too.

Agree. At least he has the ability to work into a game now. He didn't have that last year. if he got shut out early it was lights out. Pretty hard to slay the young man when he has had 50 touches over the last two weeks. No doubt he is on the improve.

Nothing to fix, he has one of the highest possesion counts and the lowest error count, nearly everything he does is effective. How can you blame Brett for the error the bloke he kicks it to makes next?

I maintain that IMHO the problem is he's being asked to start as a FF (which he again did yesterday) but he just wants to be up in the play as a midfielder, and he loses some motivation as a result. What I'd do as coach is bite the bullet, say to Lids that the fwd thing isn't working, we're going to start you in the midfield and that by the end of the year we expect you to be one of the premier midfielders of the competition because you have the talent to be one and you're at the point where you should be delivering.

I just hope he isn't carrying something like OP.

If you told me Deledio was going to have 50 touches over two weeks then I would have assumed he'd easily be one of the BOGs in both matches.

I want him to single handedly win us a game or two this year.

Richo does it, Brown did it.

Foley has shown he can do it now too.

His best game was against Essendon last year where he used his pace and long kicking to shred Essendon apart. This year he's had the same possessions as that game but hasn't been anywhere near as damaging in my opinion. Is it a matter of time? We just want to get the best out of him, even if it was inconsistent at first.

Once we get a game plan i think we'll see a big improvement in him.

Ever since Deledio has played on the ball he has been doing fine. He is versatile and I think will be a better player than Roughhead and probably Franklin if he is just let loose in the middle and he stays there.

He showed some great poise yesterday to hold onto the footy and find the best option, where as others around him just seem to panic and have no composure when they have the ball.

The kid can play, leave him alone.
