PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

There are a few things that really surprise me and one of them is the amount of flack that the youngsters from the 2005 draft cop. In particular Cleve Hughes.

We all well know that in terms of developing youngsters, the taller they are, the longer they take to develop. Small players should be pretty much ready once their body and fitness levels are up to scratch, KPP's take a bit longer as their bodies often require a fair bit more work in terms of bulking up as well as core strength stuff, and ruckmen are often given at least 2-3 yrs before anything is expected of them.

So we have a 20 yr old KPP who has been struggling a bit. Quite a common theme among most young footballers.

I believe the fact that we've been struggling a bit has caused people to put their focus on those who seem to be our underperforming youngsters. Hughes, JON etc. we seem to be forgetting how young these guys still are.

So, why am I writing this. I'm doing this because I strongly believe blokes like Cleve are going to be quality players and that we just need to relax a little. There's no doubt that Cleve at times looked disinterested when playing for Coburg. A lot of youngsters have issues that cause them to underperform. If Cleve can overcome this I have no doubt he has the ability to hold down CHF/FF in the future. It's really up to the coaches to get his mind going in the right direction.

Cleve played seven games off the bench this yr for a total of ten overall and the quality of football he played when playing for Richmond was far superior to the level he played when at Coburg. Is there a correlation to effort and delivery or what league he's playing? Potentially.

Remember we've held on to guys like Kelvin Moore and Jay Schulz a lot longer than Cleve he's got a bit of time on his hands...

having said that I believe '08 will be his make or break year. Go Clever!
