PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Not sure of where to place this study, I've begun it here because it affects all facets of the Tigers. It has implications on the field & off the field, it involves players, administration & supporters. Whether we are on the field, or not, our involvement with the Tiges puts us in a position to influence others.

My aim is to begin a dialogue where many of us, from our various backgrounds, can relate our thoughts about, meanings, & experiences of leadership. The idea is to learn from each other, and to provide a basis for students of leadership to gather resources. Utmost, it can give all of us connected with Tigerland the opportunity to conduct ourselves in a manner that shows leadership and inspires others about us.

I hope to cover ideas of leadership, generally, in different parts of the world, in Australia; the major factors or components of leadership, and what are the recent developments & technologies that help us to identify leadership.

What is leadership?

Many people find themselves involved with leadership or leaders. Some people have inate leadership abilities and seem to be involved in leadership roles wherever they may turn. There are some who actively seek leadership responsibilities but hash it up when the opportunity comes. Others need the direction of leaders and inately flock towards them for direction. There are still others that have leadership responsibilities thrust upon them and scratch their heads wondering what the hell they should do.

There are many forms of political leadership.
Civilization has given us an evolution of such. Beginning with local warlords & despots, monarchs & emperors, dictators & lord protectors, all the way through to prime-ministers & presidents. Even the 2 major forms of democracy, both social & totalitarian can provide varying outcomes from Hitler, Amin & Stalin through to Gandhi, Castro & Roosevelt.

So what is leadership?

A short definition would be:
"Leadership is essentially about the way we influence those with whom we associate and the outcomes that result."

Essentially there are 2 key words - influence & outcomes - both have degrees & styles, & both can be positive & negative.

1. How do we influence others?

2. What outcomes do we achieve?

Leadership is both a trait & a behaviour.

Scientists & psychologists have calculated that about 33% of leadership is inate, ie you're born with it, 33% is learnt as behaviours, and the rest can't be explained or hasn't yet become evident. This means that some are born with leadership talent and potential, yet if these talents are not nurtured within the environment, they can be left undeveloped. In the right environment, they can blossom. In the wrong environment, that inate leadership ability can be turned into a negative, leading to negative outcomes.

Those that aren't natural leaders can pick up alot about leadership just by being in the right environment. There are many cases of reluctant leaders evolving into what is termed "servant leaders" who achieve enormously positive results.

In the 1980s & 90s, two learned American psychologists, Bernard Bass & Bruce Avolio, created a "9-factor" model called "The Full Range Leadership Model" translating attributes & behaviours & setting the goal posts of leadership.

I hope to go on with this later, but would like to encourage the rest of you to take this opportunity to convey some thoughts & experiences, both positive & negative. And how we can use these to achieve a positive outcome for the Richmond Football Club and, of course, ourselves.
