Leadership Group 2009

Not:
Cotch won't be in the leadership group next yr. give him time.
Morton won't be either - only 2nd yr at the club and establishing himself
Reiwoldt won't be either - just establishing himself in the firsts. needs a big yr in 09
Johnson shouldn't be - let him concentrate on his footy. its time for change looking at the future

Yes:
Newman - can't see him on your list but will/should be captain next yr
Lids - a definite for the leadership group. is our best player and if he had 1 more yr under his belt i'd make him captain
Axel - hard worker who is the future of the club. a definite
Tuck - is hard at it and his 2nd half was awesome. should be included
Simmonds - leads the big men in the middle. been at the club 4 yrs now. should be included

Special mentions:
Richo, Bowden, Brown, Johnson - these guys as senior members of the RFC should be consulted and used as mentors when/where required.

Agree completely Tiger Shark. All of the above would be perfect for the leadership group, but perhaps Richo deserves one last chance thanks to his terrific season in '08.

ta.

yeah i see Richo as a leader at the club. he doesn't necessarily have to be in the LG though. he is very well respected on & off the field

Who was in the 008 leadership group?

Johnson

Foley
Newman

Brown
Deledio
Pettifer
?
?

I think Johnson should remain captain for another year with Deledio and Newman Vice Captains, Foley and Cotchin in the leadership group with whoever the club sees fit taking up the rest of the places (hard to tell from the outside!)

I agree our senior players should be mentors more than leaders, with the exclusion of Johnson who should either continue as our captain or retire gracefully IMO.

Deledio would be the perfect captain right now but it seems he hasn't developed a few of the qualities yet. He'll get there, but Cotchin may just take over at 21 and never look back.

If the playing group gets behind Deledio to be captain then it will happen - could be similar to Judd at West Coast and Carlton having the captaincy thrust upon him by his teammates.

Richo has to be in any leadership group, if not then it is a joke. He is the best leader we have by miles.

newman (c)

deledio (vc)
Foley (vc)
simmonds (vc)

BIG WILLBUR (dvc)
tambling (dvc)
richo (dvc)
johnson (dvc)

newman is a gun player and leads from the front, just shades deledio for captain. Might think it is stupid but if tambling had mor respnsibility i believe he would play better and should keep richo and johnson in there ofr a bit of expirience.

To borrow a phrase,Richo is our spiritual leader

Pretty much agree, but think Johnson would be kept in the leadership group, but not as Captain. But still think he has a bit to add as a leader if what they say is correct.

Captain: Newman

Vice Captains: Foley & Deledio

Leadership Group: Simmonds, Tuck, Richo & Moore

Comments: The Captaincy has been done to death, no comment there. Personally I was reluctant to put Deledio in as a Vice, I really think differently to some on here and think just because he is our "best" player that doesn't make him a walk up for the captaincy. I would like to see him develop a little more before such titles being heaped on him.

I was going to put him in the leadership group but figured he IS the type who will probably improve with more responsibility placed on him. He has said, as well as our coaches, similar...when he applies himself he is capable of great things, the trick is he has only started to realise this year what work rate is required at AFL level.

That's not a CAPTAIN for mine, but a kid developing well, don't rush him. So yeah put him in Vice to push him more, but not stack to much pressure on him. Let him continue to develop naturally but force him to start thinking gradually about play/application for the benefit of the team, not just one's self.

You could easily include any of the twilighters with our age gaps, but now is the time to focus on the future and start finding the future leaders of the club. With weak ruck stocks and a developing forward forward line I feel we need Simmonds and Richo as recognised leaders tjhough.

Richo is the heart and soul of the club and players like Riewoldt, who we need to come on, are in awe of him. Richo has his faults but he has more passion in his little finger for the club than some players have in their whole bodies, his work rate on and off the field is excpetional and his freakish ability is a testament to how far work rate can get you for how long (yeah, yeah...forget the genetics, the glass if half full talk :P )

Most years at most clubs you have someone added to the leadership group for their improved form/work rate/success....I think Moore should be recognised as that, also in the hope it spurs him on to strive just as hard, if not harder, next year. We need to develop leadership at all zones of the ground.

We can live without Brown (who i don't rate as a leader) and Bowden/Johnson (who both are good leaders but now have to be phased out of the club and let our youth grow from out of their shadow).

I did toy with the idea of making a Junior leader in Cotchin but I think titles like that are a bit wanky and sometimes encourage wrong sets of thinking/development. Our youth should be looking to our leaders for leadership (suprise suprise) rather than a golden child with only a year or two's experience more than them, no matter how good they are. Make everyone earn something. No free passes or titles.

Cotchin does not need to be patronised, he just needs time to prove he can work as hard to do justice to how good we all know he can be, both as a superstar and as a strong potential captain.
