PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I was recently sent away by my employer to a leadershipmanagement course, and one of the topics we were discussing was team building. One of the hottest discussion points was about when you recruit someone to be a leader, should they be allowed to bring in their own team, or should you provide them with one.

I think a lot of organisations (such as Telstra with Sol Trojilo) allow someone to come in and bring along their buddies who they trust can execute their plans for them. This can lead to a culture where failure is inevitable as the leadership group have a comfortable dynamic where there isn't someone to challenge their decisions and really question if the right thing is being done. "Yes men" syndrome if you will.

What does this have to do with Richmond? Everything.

Well, we got Wallace. Wallace got Royal. He got Paul Armstrong on board, his right hand man. OK, he got a couple of other assistants, but by and large they were people he had a say in recruiting. He also had Miller under his thumb. Miller bought Francis Jackson along, and no doubt called in some other friends to help out from his days at Nth.

Along the way, Wallace has pretty much had his way with how he wants the club to be built. Some would say that the coach needs full support. But it would appear that the support was unquestionable, and as we've seen, that's a disastrous thing.

Now, a little way on down the track, we've recruited Craig Cameron to take over from Miller. One of his appointments was to replace Paul Armstrong with Ross Monaghan. We've got a couple of new scouts, who I'm told were also old Cameron buddies from Melbourne.

Tony Free was bought back in to bring some Richmond people to the club. He started reviewing how things were run when he got here, and apparently got in touch with an old buddy of his, and got him an assistant coaching gig - Wayne Campbell. You can bet your bottom dollar everyone likes having a familiar face to work with. You know how each other works, and can just roll the sleeves up and get into it. I'm sure Free and Cameron are no different.

What scares me though is, how are we going to change the culture, if no one is really going to step up and challenge someone. It's fine to sack the incumbents, but what use is that if all you do is replace them with some of your own cronies and buddies? It's going to happen at Richmond again. I can see it now.

I think part of the reason why Carlton do so well on the field is Judd has come into their club, and challenged people. From telling some young players to send back the bowl of chips they'd ordered to snack on, to demanding more of his teammates on the field, he wasn't prepared to accept what he saw. I bet he didn't bring any buddies with him. Richmond need this type of personality in it's new coach. I doubt that individual is inside the RFC right now.

We need to stop looking over our shoulders for our mates we're comfortable with, and go out and actually find the best possible person. We need to do this with every position that opens up in the football department.
