Leigh Matthews Is A Little Interested!

Apparently Matthews said on AW this evening that there is more chance of Ricky Ponting coaching the RFC in 2010 than him. He is not interested in coaching and the story was made from a throw away line.
Hate to burst everyone's bubbles, but I heard similar.

Well even that might be better than some of our past choices, although I suspect Ricky would be more interested in the North job.

Even if this did happen to eventuate, Leigh wouldn't be sitting no interview process, which no matter how good a coach he is runs completely counter to what the club needs to do this appointment. We need to find the right person that fits into the correct structure, not necessarily a Leigh Matthews.

I guess he'll still keep his legend status now. ;D

:rofl

That was obviously a consideration.

You beauty. It appears that every coach in the AFL will be available next year. I hear even Sir Les Ferguson is thinking of putting his hand up. No wonder we need more AFL teams, not enough tems for all the budding coaches.

Think Sir Les Paterson is more likely!

You seriously dont expect Lethal to come out in the media and say Im 110% committed to rebuiling RFC and then we overlook him for the coaching job?

Spot on btoz, we will only ever know if lethal is interested in coaching us (& he may not be interested) when/if he gets the job. there is no way a man like lethal will come out and say his interested if there is a chance he wont get it, think about it people ;)

I don't recall him being reluctant about the Brisbane job when he was trying to gain it.

Actually both Leigh Matthews is on record as saying and one of the heavyweights at Brisbane (can't remember if it was the CEO or President) said on SEN yesterday, that Leigh was lukewarm when he applied for the Brisbane job.

He only went along as a matter of courtesy and got more and more interested as he got into the process.

The brisbane fellow described how Leigh is a bit of a movie/tv buff (hence the Predator line) and he likened it at the time to a character from Rawhide who always spoke about how he had this whole inside him all the time that could only be filled by killing people or some such, Leigh talked about having that passion/drive/need for premierships as a coach. It was deep within and wouldn't go away, only lay dormant at times.

I share your concern, I don't want a Blight scenario where we put on our best suits, wine, dine and stroke the ego of a great and leave them with a big suitcase of cash under the table and ask them to call us. However if there has been anything to this story I wouldn't discount him too easily because he wasn't playing his hunger/interest out to the media.

I was happy to March's response to this, in saying we would also see the Coach (Laidley) who left North and we will be going through a exhaustive process. It appears we truly will be filtering a wide selection of candiates which is heartening to hear. If Leigh or any experienced coach joins the process they will be aware of this and will ahve no choice to show interest/hunger if they want to stand our amongst such a field.

I don't think March is stupid and only stupidity could lead us to do a Blight/Stkilda.

Matthews is a hard nut coach and that would make a pleasant change for us the long suffering supporters and a nasty shock for the playing list.

That said, I don't think he will coach Richmond, that would mean moving down from Brisbane, besides which Gold Coast are coming into the competition, they will have better draft picks and access to the best uncontracted AFL players as well, plus they'd probably have more money to throw at a Senior Coach to boot.

I reckon Matthews would be tempted by GC, Richmond would be a long shot, as much as I would like to have him onboard.

Spot on! He won't waste his time with us.

More to the point, RFC should NEVER even entertain the idea of Matthews as its senior coach. As great as he has been, he's just that - has been. Move on and try to find the next Leigh Matthews
