Les Revenant de Punt Voire season review

Since the Herald sun decided to review our club, I thought I'd give my spin on it, mainly because I know so much more than they do ;D

Richmond end-of-season report according to the Ghost of Punt Road.

LADDER POSITION: 12th (10 wins, 12 losses)

COACH

Best thing he did was just bring some intelligence. Drag stupid players. Make some team rules, don't trade early draft picks. On field, had some but overall little impact. 6/10

DEFENCE

Gas and Kellaway excellent. Newman stepped up. Hall stepped up. End of season tiredness of our midfield led to the defence looking worse than it was. 122 rebounds from Bowden certianly helped the gameplan. 7/10

MIDFIELD

Two great contributors, Tuck and cogs, but little else other than promise from Deledio. Future looks better with Polo, Foley, Tambling and Meyer all a chance to step up. Raines, Roach and Jackson may be smokies, and the return of Rodan will help. 3/10

RUCK STRENGTH

Early Knobel was excellent though gave not enough arnound the ground. Simmonds a late season revelation. 4/10

FORWARDS

Richo and Brown were amazing as a combination. Once brown went down, not enough stepped up. Krakouer and pettifer do not a Brown maketh. Not enough crumbing strategy, too much Richo focus. 3/10

LEADERSHIP

Wrong person made captain. Bowden excellent and vocal in defence, Cambell tried to cover for Johnson, but 'making a huddle' is not captaincy. 2/10

LIST MANAGEMENT

Much improved. A real plan is in place, half of which was begun in 2003 by Frawley. After two years of youth recruiting, some foundations look built, but Wallace has admitted to three glaring gaps, 24-28 year olds, defence and replacments for Richo and Gaspar in three years or so. All being worked on. 9/10

Off-field performance

Huge turnaround, good staff, good teamwork 10/10

WHAT RICHMOND NEEDS

two more years of young recruits and not too many short term fixes. A good blend of big bodies, key PP and wingmen to be developed and brought in.

SHINING LIGHT

SHANE TUCK and Richo. Both played hard and well all year. Very selfess, very effective.

THE GOOD

Took more risks, played rookies on tough opponents and did well, put pressure on kids to really earn their place in the firsts.

THE BAD

Poor forward line strategy, poor marking of opponents at times, not enough midfield options to cover the load.

YOU'RE EXCUSED

Brown....was perhaps going for a Brownlow, did everything expected except perhaps in the midfield.

Bowden. Best year yet, led and kicked well.

Richo...finally showed maturity. Bleeds black and Gold

Tuck...never cared what point the score was at, just kept hammering away.

Deledio...did as well as any first year could

MOST IMPROVED

KAYNE PETTIFER ...whilst he has more work to do, his improvment was massive. Did some good midfield work, which is where his scope for improvment is, and his extra goal contribution was important.

Shane Tuck...not much to say really. Number 1 in contested possessions.

Chris Hyde's early form before injury was excellent. Went from Solid to attacking player.

Ray Hall...I think we finally know what he is, A KP backman who can run and kick deep into midfield, and play an occasional role forward. Very very useful player.

YEAR TO FORGET

Daniel Jackson...after great promise last year just didn't quite click. Shows so much but hasn't yet put the puzzle together.

Brent Hartigan...much like Jackson, except injury cruelled his year that was to be his big step up.

Richard Tambling...shows such promise, but really won't have his proper first year until 2006 due to injuries.

Greg Stafford....did a lot of resting in the forward pocket...he must be very refreshed by now.

WILL THEY BE BACK?

Hilton: May be kept simply because we have so little depth and so few people in his age bracket. Depends on list space. If we are really aiming for lots of recruiting in next years super draft, he may last until then.

Morrison: If the coach hasn't seen something he likes in him by now, why keep him? He has fought hard all year, and done his best.

Archibald: Has he shown enough in his one injury free year? Will they keep him for one more to see his development?

Knobel: What is his role if Simmonds is being kept as No1 ruckman now? Is it worth having him in the 22 just to give Simmo a rest? Stafford could fulfill that role and contribute down forward as well.

Krakouer: Sublime skills, not much intensity or commitment. Should be working for local government perhaps. Could be fantastic, could be traded.

I'd have Tucky as our most improved by miles. Pettifer was getting regular games last season whereas Tucky's gone from not being able to get a game at all, to an announcement he was saved from the chopping block by the skin of his teeth, to top 3 b&f with a strong possibility of taking Jack home.

Agree Aunty Rosy how could you Pettrifieds improvement (if there really was a huge amount) ahead of Tuck who was our engine room for the entire 22 weeks.

Defence 5/10

Gaspar and Kellaway try hard as does Hall, however Gaspar and Hall lack skill and decision making skills, with Hall being poor overhead and very reactive which means he has trouble reading the play!!!!

Most Improved - TUCKY by the length of the Nullabor Plain

You R X Cused - RICHO, COUGHS, BOWDEN DELEDIO and BROWN

YEAR TO FORGET - STAFFORD, TIVENDALE, TAMBLING (inj)

WIll they be back - HILTON, CHAFFEY, PETTIFER, TIVENDALE, HALL, MORRISON, STAFFORD unfortunately the Chaff and Pettrified are certainties to stay which annoys me already so i am starting 06 with the same disdain of these duds that i have started every season.

R. Hall a KP backman? Will not be part of the future and cannot rely on him.

Chris Hyde, well others have will have the same opinion as me, not good enough for the future.

It's is worth having Knobel, short term only, if fitness level & skill improve can be part of the future, but has a question mark over his head.

Deliedio's season was absolutely a touch of class, well above the average 1st yearlings.

Defence, Midfield, and Foward line are a major concern, in the 5th yr of TW's tenure will tell the story on how we have travelled...........that goes without saying, yeah.

Great post Ghost...

I tend to agree... Rosy is forgetting the way that in junior club football you give the most improved award to a kid who is not also the best and fairest. Tucky gets the best and fairest (or close to) despite being clearly the most improved, therefore another recipient for the most improved must be found - Pets!

Hall is required.

Haha antman Richmond isn't a junior club. Our players are adults on hundreds of thousands of dollars a year not under 11's who need some encouragement award and a pat on the head to keep playing the game.
Trophies should be awarded on merit not a token gesture. Ghost may well think Kayne was genuinely more improved than Shane which is fair enough but I don't think anyone else in the team went close to Tucky in that regard. :hearton

I wonder if it was Pettifer who brings out the stuffed tiger or whatever curse is hanging round punt road. I can't recall anyone in recent times who was absolutely persecuted as much as him. (Joel and Daffy would probably go close I guess).

What will it take for people to let go of the past, and treat people based on their form *now* not 4 years ago.

Pettifer isn't the most improved, Tucky is by a long shot, but you'd think people would be happy that a guy who was utter crap 12 months ago, can get his head together and start giving something back to the club. I'm greatful that he's started to play to his abilities, and hope he continues. At least then we would be able to say that the draft pick wasn't a complete waste (unlike Fiora and others).

The criticism of Johnson's captaincy is pretty harsh too. If you watch him carefully, he runs around and speaks to a lot of people during the game, providing encouragement and direction. He might not be able to get on the radio and talk with confidence, or jump on the footy show and promote the club (we've got others who can do that) but he sure does do a lot of little things that obviously the players appreciate.

Think some folks need to go back and have a look at the david king article on EOTT about supporting all our guys...

Maybe General but I wasn't criticising Kayne one little bit and reading this thread I can't see where anybody else has either so I don't understand your comments.

I was merely commenting on a part of Ghost's post that I didn't agree with.  That's what discussion forums are for.

Wasn't directed at you Rosy, but just a general observation of the boards lately. If you look at comments about Hall, Pettifer, Johnson, kraks and a few others, you'll see a sad trend. There's a bit of reputation of certain players being used, rather than judgement of this years performance.

Eg the squib thread - perhaps it could have been named after Rhys Shaw, who performed one of the greatest squib efforts in a grand final than naming it after one of our own players (remember the one where Lynch kicked a goal after Shaw he took his eyes of the ball etc). We need to change the culture of the club a bit I reckon in regards to how much we go after our own players. If I were a young guy, or a "free agent" I'd certainly take that into consideration when thinking about coming to Richmond.

If anyone needs a pat on the head its Pets ;), Rosy!

But seriously, Tuck is SO improved its not funny. Totally fringe player one year, elite midfielder and shining light of the RFC the next. This is sort of my point... Tucky is beyond being patronised by being called most improved despite clearly being the most improved... if you see what I mean...

Fear not, there aint much in it between Tuck and Pets, but the reasons I recon Petts improved more is that:

a) Petts came off a REALLY low base

b) I thought Tuck was really good last year. He just didn't get much play time. Therefor his improvement wasn't that big this year, he just got to show it ;)

GOPR - well done for having a go at this - its tough work and take a fair bit of time and effort.

Well done for putting it out there.....
