Lids for Captain 2009 onwards

Sometimes it's hard to take you serious Claw, for all your brains, you make pretty outlandish statements.

Laughable? Please.

I love all these so called hard asses on here who take soft options on their posts, what a silly assumption to make that people are recommending Newman because of a half year's form.

Methinks your a little out of touch with the club in W.A if you don't understand Newman's influence at Punt rd amongst the players.

I guess the next thing you will say is his two best clubmen awards have been because of the lack of other options.

Instead of posting negativity, how about contributing something positive, like your own opinion?
my opinion is he doesnt tackle chase or man up he hasnt done these things for most of his career.he may be okay around the club but its onfield i want to see my captain lead.

Maybe but it did give him the opportunity to lead.
Voss to was assigned co-captain with Lynch I think too in his first year as skipper.

Fair call, I just don't believe in rotational policies or co-captains myself.

Deputies, sure, but captains, no.

They don't fit into my definition of leadership, just my view.

It's old school I know, I just think it's a new age fad from people to afraid to make real decisions.

I am not so sure. I like it in some ways. less reliance on someone if they are injured or lose form.

Perhaps we should have co skippers in '09. Sugar & Lids?

Just a thought..

Think Lenny Hayes became skipper at 21. Maybe 22.

Hayes, for a year in 2004, aged 24.

Voss, co-captain in 1997, aged 21/22yo. (We have another exception.)

Buckley, from 1999, aged 27.

I can't see any other mid-20's player good enough to take on captaincy at our club.

I don't think the particular age matters much considering Lids is a mature young man already anyway.

Fair enough, but I don't understand how people get hung up about the "sexy" options. So many don't seem to get there are a MULTITIDE of boxes to being a leader/captain of a club. The only one is not "must be a spectacular player".

I would be all for naming a Riccutio/Voss/Hird/Kelly type if we had them

There are not many Riccutio/Voss/Hird/Kelly type players running around. One of the key reasons we have been so abysmal on field for so long has been lack of champion leaders like such.

We have some in the works now, but too young, Lids is far from a Carey at the same comparable ages. Fact is it is very rare for such to get those honours.

Statistically Richo was even better than Carey by 21, but he wasn't named Captain for apparent reasons.

It's just too early for Lids, yet because he is one or if not our no 1, talented player, people want to burden him with the captaincy so young.

Lids is not a natural leader from what I have seen, he could become a fantastic leader, but he is not a natural.

Now Cotchin...that's a different thing...

And no, I am not saying make Cotch captain lol!

on field leaders. for me theres two and both have some questions about them. without going into whys and why nots they are tuck and foley.

See, there is the problem at Punt Rd when you talk about "on field leaders".

Another reason we have been so poor, we have very few players who have been consistent, and next to none who make good leaders.

People talk about our ruck stakes, but I think our leadership stakes has been our worst on field area on our list for MANY years. Not just the Wallace or Frawley years.
