Lids next contract

I hope you're right Craig. We're going to need it.
I'm a massive fan of Lids already however not too long ago everyone thought Brad Ottens was the answer to our prayers so lets see Lids dominate the competition for a season or two before getting too carried away. After all one player does not a team make.

As I understand it Cogs is on $300,000 and Johnson came across for $250,000 but after 3 years is probably also on about $300,000.
Deledios salary should be set at a figure in the same region, say $1,500,000 over 5 years, with say a $50,000 bonus for a top 3 finish in the JDM, plus a further $50,000 FOR A FLAG. :clap :clap :clap

There will be plenty of money to go round next year with Stafford and possibly Kellaway retiring, Richo and Gaspar on the vets list and hopefully the delistings and or trading of Tivendale, Hall, and Chaffey and Pettifer, also the possible delistings of guys such as Moore and Roach.
That way the up and coming stars can be upgraded and you may even find the tiges may have a surplus to spend up on a key player from another club.
.......

This is typical of the thinking that has got our club to the level of success we have "enjoyed" over the past few years, start counting "savings" that don't exist and salivate over a "surplus" in a club that has lost millions of dollars and has a long way to go to even prove that it will again be viable as a competitive threat in this competition.

For each player that goes another has to come in to replace him, and unless you want a squad full of first and second year draftees, you still have to end up paying basically the same for an equivalent player - the Ottens/Simmonds situation showed that (and it currently looks like we swapped paying way over the mark for one previous potential "champion" to paying over the mark for another just average player).

Tell you what, why don't we sign up Deledio on a 10-year $6M deal (he's obviously worth it, according to some here), and we can then ask every other player on the list to be prepared to take a big pay cut in their careers if - god forbid! - he doesn't deliver on the expectations. I mean, there's little chance of him not being such a dominant player, leading us to Premierships and glory, is there?...........

Me thinks Lids will have many contacts ahead of him with RFC. He is the third youngest on our list! Scarey isn't it :clap

Amazing. That is just staggering. We have to follow the Eagles lead the way the did the Judd deal, get it done quickly and quietly mid season and stop all the conjuncture which does nobody any good at all. Talk to his management now, I think Paul Connors is his manager and I think we have a solid relationship so all things considered I think we will get it done round 12ish. I think I have already said such in other thread.

There's no way the club will let anyone else get a foot in the door with Lids, he's the kind of player recruiters dream about drafting. I agree with WT, handle it the way the Weagles did with Judd. The Tigers also have one very small advantage over the Eagles with Judd, Lids is from Victoria. No homesickness factor.

One thing I have liked so far is that Lids seems to be approaching his footy as if he is a permanent fixture at RFC.  I hope his next contract is three years and a competitive salary - something near Tuck's would be appropriate.

David C is right though - for every dud we lose or every contract Miller puts the screws into (Rodan's salary is a case in point almost pure performance, Ottens was another case in point) we will have rookies and junors stepping up who will deserve more and based upon improved performance the club will need to provide more.  Look at all the kids and rookies, those who survive and contribute will be paid more than they get now.  Which is why Richmond's financial state is so parlous.  We can only afford the minimum salary cap as a club.

OUR CURRENT LEVEL OF PLAYER PAYMENTS WONT WIN ALLOW US TO WIN A PREMIERSHIP.

Its a fact that if we do get a premiership level group of players together that we will be paying close to the top of the salary cap.  Right now we all know what our players are able to deliver but we also know that the club can't afford to pay them more even if they did deserve it.  Somehow the club has to manouvere itself out of this state or players like Lids and Bling will leave if we try to screw them down too hard as they come into their own.  Its an issue which is not going anywhere for some years to come- very dpressing actually by comparison with bloody Collingwood.  We come last and we almost go under - they come last and make record profits.  Are those black and white stripes hypnotic or something? ???

As Lids is still unproven potential with a huge heap of upside his next contract should be for 2 years on a reasonably moderate base with match payments and performance bonuses.
Something like 100/150 base say 3 per match with bonuses for being in the best players on a regular basis.
This would give him the opportunity to earn reasonably good money if he keeps stepping up without him being abused as an overpaid dud on the off chance he may struggle under extra scrutiny.
If Lids develops as we all expect his future contracts ( after he confirms his superstar status by 2008) will be huge.

This is the key to our next few years of re-signing our younger players!

We have to start making big inroads into our debt as my understanding is the agreement we have with the AFL for guaranteeing our overdraft, gives them a big say in what percentage of the salary cap we pay our players.

We have to get the debt down or get somebody else to guarantee our overdraft!

Greg Miller has expressed to a wide audience that the RFC is fully aware of Brett coming out of contract next year and will be ready to negotiate his new contract.

Will not phase me one bit whether it's a 3 or 5 year contract, and if he is struck down with injury, well, that's out of our control.

Come on people the guy has played 1 year. He has a long long way to go sign him on a 2 year deal 250000-300000 for the two year then if he has develop the way we all hope he does he get life.
