Would really like to see the guy start as a onballer changing on the HFF where he could use his smarts up forward to be a genuine goal kicker for us when resting. He definetly has the smarts for both positions and would be a plus in both positions.

It’s amazing we see it why don't the coaches see it; yeah i know coaches think blah blah blah lids can give us run out of the backline so can Raines, Newman, white and Bowden. i don’t want him playing that griffen type of role wait in the wings and give me the ball when u pluck it out of the packs, lids has the body, speed and strength through the hips to make his mark through the middle and when changing through the middle he must play forward, yes he didn't have his kicking boots on last year i think it was 5G 13B but his 1st year i thought he kicked well about 14 or 15 goals i think, i could be wrong.

Whilst I agree he should be rested forward, the kicking at goal of our 2004 top two draft picks last year was shocking. :duh
However they weren't on their own, many of our senior players are substandard in this area as well. Too often we miss crucial shots at goal. As has been said many times, bad goal kicking = bad football.

We are not creating enough opportunities to waste our shots at goal and we really suffer when we don't convert, particularly against the good teams. Again on Saturday against Melbourne we missed three easy early shots at goal and the game had effectively bolted at quarter time. :P

Two of my biggest gripes about our side over the past few seasons are poor goal kicking and tackling. Unfortunately Deledio is poor in both these areas currently but they are areas he can work on.

He's a champion midfielder in the making. 'In the making' being the opperative words. I understand what Plough is trying to do to educate him. Another poster talked of their frustration that he does something mind blowing and then goes missing. How old is he again?

I feel the same, though I'd rather see him resting deep in the forward line, where his height can present more problems and put more pressure on the opposing backs. As has been said, though, he has been anything but a reliable kick for goal, and that, along with his tackling, has to improve if he is going to take the next step.

I'd also like to see Tuck resting deep in the forward pocket more, as he has proven he is a good overhead mark, astute lead and a reliable kick for goal.

Deledio, must become more of a 1% player this year. Tackles, smoothers, holding the ball to force another contest.

Fell free if I am wrong but I cannot remember him using his pace when we don't have the ball that often. He did it a bit in the International Rules series but not too often in a Richmond jumper. Actually he menaced the Irish but I think that was more becuase of the team environment, Sheedy harped on about that and the entire squad did the that.

That tells me two things

1) Deledio like most footballers is influenced by the actions and intensity of the group. It spreads through the team and when he has that attitude he is a defensive force. Nothing ground breaking there.
2) We at Richmond do not yet have that attitude or culture amongst our group.

Chases downs can change the flow of a game and it is a rare player who can do this. Davey springs to mind, Ablett and Daniel Kerr are all elite in this area. Deledio shares a lot in common with this group and there is nothing wrong with holding him accountable to these standards.

Agree Scoop.

I was just thinking about how excited I was to get Lids an Bling in the 04 draft an though Bling hasnt set the world on fire yet,Lids I think has done more then what should have been expected of him especially considering he played his first game as a 17 year old but it seems a lot of fans wanted an expected more,I just ask how much more was the kid suppose to do?

On his 1%ers Love to seem them improve a tad but not that fussed as I think he is 1 of only three genuine match winners we have an the other 2 aint famous for 1 %ers

you've hit on a good point there CC rider. The bona fide match winners at clubs that win flags ARE good on the 1%ers. I reckon Richo is often pretty good, not always. Deledio should get good

Deledio will get midfielder's stats for 1%ers and tackles when he starts playing in the midfield full time. There's a lot of smothers and tackles to be made at the stoppages these days.

He does lack defensive intensity, is playing him in the backline trying to make him a complete footballer before thrusting him into the midfield. If that was the case then Tambling would be playing in defence as well because he lacks defensive intensity as well. Is it doing more harm than good by him not playing his natural position since under 18's. Is TW trying to complicate things too much?

Whatever TW's motive is, he certainly hasnt seen much footy off half back in dees and geelong game that i have seen this year. time will tell if he gets the most out of Deledio.

It is a shame because Murphy from Carlton is showing heaps, so is D. Pearce from Port and Monfries. Lids has the ability to show the midfield promise these guys show, he just isnt getting the opportunity and our midfield is suffering as a result.

How can Murphy (17.5 disposals, 2.4 errors per game last year), Pearce (19.0, 3.6) and Monfries (14.5, 2.2) be showing more than Deledio (19.0, 1.9) especially given only Murphy is younger (by 3 months)?

Monfries kicking is woeful too - and I havent looked at any stats. It was like that as a junior as well. Lots of floaters and missed targets. Really like his endeavour, but his finishing by foot leaves a lot to be desired at times.

Great post Disco(better avatar).
Lids is doing everything we could hope for until this point.

Still I expect him to go up a notch this season..

I clearly didnt say they were showing more than Deledio.

I was specifically referring to the fact that this pre season they have been playing in the guts, showing a bit of promise and look to be on the improve, and yes I know it is only pre season form but Deledio is not getting the same opportunities.

Time will tell if playing Deledio off the backline is good for his development but I am clearly not the only one on here keen to see him strut his stuff in the midfield.
