Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd says that his enforced time on the sidelines has left him pondering a new career within the next few years.
“I’ve been watching with interest the post-AFL careers of Darren Bennett and Ben Graham in the NFL,” he says. “However, gridiron doesn’t really interest me. Those helmets mess up my hair and all that padding makes my bum look big.”
Lloyd says that players like Saverio Rocco are more suited to punting in the NFL than him. “Sav’s got really bad hair and a big bum anyway, so there’s little downside for him.”
The Essendon spearhead says he was inspired by the Socceroos loss to Italy on Monday morning. “I was really excited when I saw Italian full-forward Francesco Totti dive for that free and then calmly slot through the winning goal from a set shot,” he says. “I’m really good at set shots. I’m even better at diving for free kicks.”
With a number of Socceroos pondering retirement after the shattering loss, Lloyd thinks he could slot into the Australian team quickly. “The team’s going to be needing some leadership, which is my forté. (Hey, that’s an Italian word!) Throughout my AFL career I’ve served under some great leaders, and since becoming captain my team is looking to be number one come draft time this year.”
