Looking after it

Il Generalissimo,

Really Sir, this kind of measured and thoughtful analysis has no place on the Internet.

Putting that to one side for a moment, the numbers for JON are depressing given that I saw his game for Coburg against Tassie last Saturday. Seemed to turn it over just about EVERY SINGLE TIME. AAAAGH. Have we got somebody who is fast, flash, and foolish?

On a more positive note, Newman did better than I expected. I have a secret campaign to discredit Player Newman and poor disposal was going to be one leg of it. (Lack of stopping ability was going to be the other.) Now I may have to undertake a taxpayer funded $100M advertising campaign to bury your inconvenient truths under buckets of spin. Thanks very much.

Please try to be more stupid in future. Thanks in anticipation.

Great stats General,

What is the bet that this will turn up as an "in-depth" article in the Herald-Sun within two weeks?

Jon looks NQR full stop when he has the footy. He seems to be in the right place but once he gets it, oh god!

I'm not too concerned about JON just yet. He's only played a handful of games (he missed quite a few last year too), so I'm hopeful he will settle down in the near future.

Again, I don't think his kicking techinique is horrible, I think it's got more to do with decision making, rather than a poor technique. I'd be more concerned about our Captain at this point in time, as he's really stinking the place up with his disposal.

I might add to this tonight, maybe with Sydney or the Hawks, seeing as they're an often talked about team.

True that. Richardson makes too many errors as well for an experienced player.

Going on the figures that the Pro-Stats website used to display for 2000-2006, Richo is actually above average this year. :-\

the first time i ever saw JON kick i was worried, it just looked as though he had an awkward style.
but then i watched him closely at training a few weeks ago and his kicking really impressed me. i don`t think he missed a target that day.i think he will be fine.
it`s great to see that hughes , polak, krakouer, newman deledio, hyde and tambling all have equal or better possessions per clanger stats than the great judd and kerr.

i know they are only stats but it`s interesting to compare lids with kerr.
kerr averaging 24 possessions with 8.6 possessions per clanger.
lids averaging almost 20 possessions with a better possessions per clanger rate of 9.69.
not bad for a kid who just got out of his teens a few weeks ago .
he`s going to be a beauty.

Interesting to see Cam Howat is as good at delivering as Joel Bowden. A very good result for a midfielder. And challenges what some here have said about him.

Interesting to see that Tambling uses it as well as Judd and is well in our top half. Contradicts the perception by some (many?) about his disposal skills.

Was going to start another thread but I like this one of the Generals (update it regularly G :thumbsup) that needs a bump.
The stats won't tell the whole story and by my observations this year, below are the players I feel are mainly at fault..

Can't kick - The main culprits.

Kane Johnson - Shocking disposal for a senior player. Just shocking. Can't hit the side of a barn at the moment. Does not set any sort of example for his team mates to follow skills wise and turns the ball over time and time again by foot. Geez Kane just hit a target, any *smile*ing target!

Andrew Raines - I like Rainesy but he's been really disappointing. Has had a very ordinary season to date compared with '06.
His disposal by hand and foot has been very poor so far this year and he's going to put one of his team mates in hospital shortly if he keeps it up. The comparisons with Chaffey are scary. Why has his progress recessed?

Adam Pattison - Prefers to handball than kick and has very little confidence by foot. Should have nailed a fairly simple shot at goal on the run against Brissie and never looked like it. Despite being a big man he does not have good enough kicking skills for a 1st rounder in this era and it's unlikely to improve.

Jarryd Oakley-Nicholls
- Probably should be excused but the early signs are not good. Seems to have a terrible kicking style. Turns the ball over too frequently for a first round draft pick. Serious questions need to be asked re his disposal abilities.

Kent Kingsley - Shocking kick on goal. Couldn't even make the distance from 40m on the weekend. :o
His disposal isn't too bad around the ground but he's there to kick goals. If he can't do that..

Others guilty of turning it over all too often..
Tuck, Howat, Foley, Hartigan, McGuane, King, Edwards(excused), Knoble(when he gets it)

Really it's not good enough to still have so many players on our list who can't exercise the basic skill of kicking the football. We've weeded out a couple of veterans recently but seem to be replacing them with kids who have similar problems :(. Poor kicking skills has been punishing us for 20 years and we still seem to be picking up guys who can't hit a target. So frustrating. :duh

Whilst our foot skills have improve slightly over the Wallace reign we must still lift the benchmark considerably in this area. The sooner the likes of Casserley are in the team the happier I'll be.
Turnovers are killing us!!!!
