Looks like Raines will be pipped by Symes this week

Correct me if I am wrong but is Lids the only #1 draft pick to win the award in his first year of playing?

So if a guy stars in his first three games and then breaks a leg and takes a year to get over it, according to you guys he should then be ineligible to win it when he makes a remarkable come back the following year?
That's a little harsh.
The rules take that into account, which is good.
BUT they don't take into account players who get overplayed too early in their first year due to the fact that the club is struggling.
So even if they star in their second year, by default of them being with a lowly club, they play too many games for them to be eligible for the RS award the following year.
The qualifying rules need a slight tweaking, but they almost have it right IMO.

The rules are that a player must be born before the cut-off date (31.12.1984?) and have played less than ten games before the start of the season.

Raines born 8.3.1986 and had played seven games at the start of this season. The fact his debut was Round 22, 2004 is irrelevant.

On another note, Deledio wasn't nominated for a great game against Carlton last year, but got it the week after against Collingwood when he was less impressive.

Cut-off date is 1.1.1985 or before. Ten games or less at the start of the year. Suspensions incurred from AFL or state league tribunals result in ineligibility as do reprimands for certain offences.

Thursfield?  I've never seen a man get over a knee reconstruction in two weeks.

Should he make it back on the field a la Tony Liberatore in 1998 then he's still eligible. Should have got a nomination in Round 2. ::)

I'm lead to believe that Raines has got the rising star nomination this week! Also Cleve Hughes will play his first game this week! Announced to the players yesterday at training.

If true that's pretty big news in both cases. Please elaborate.

Yeah, the small clue on that was Hughesy playing in the Burger's two's. That he played as well as he did also helped ;) Knobel is trying to get up for this week too.............

Doesn't make him ineligible just means he won't get one this year.

I stand corrected PROFO. Was referring to this years rising star award.
Liked your comment about Libers, Ready. Brought back memories.
Very impressed with what I've seen with young Thursfield. Would have made inroads in the Tigers defence this year. Will (no pun intended) be one to watch next year.
