It was mentioned during the TV broadcast tonight that St.Kilda have a greater average losing margin than us this year including that horrendous 157 point drubbing. Interesting statistic that I am sure that most Saints fans won't want to claim.

Yeah gus but that doesn't take into account their winning margins (we dont have any of those yet! - well not till tonight anyway).

Winning margins dont enter the equation Roycey. Its just that we've lost more games and by smaller margins (with the exception of that Geelong match) than St Kilda.

Here's a rundown. We've lost by margins of 17, 16, 25, 32, 23, 157, 40 & 9 for an average losing margin of just under 40pnts.

The Saints till before last nights game had losing margins of 52, 31, 53, & 28 for an average losing margin of 41pnts!!!

After last nights game they kept that average up!!!

Interesting to note if you dont include that loss to Geelong our average losing margin in the other games is 23 pnts.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't that just mean that when the Saints lose they lose big, whereas while we are competitive we can't win. I am not sure that is a positive thing. You could put a VFL team in the competition and coach them to not lose by very much but I doubt you could coach them to a win.

The only thing that gives me hope when I compare our list to the Saints is that they appear to be a much older team who have missed thier opportunity, but Gherig, Harvey and Hammill's retirement will drag their average age back a fair bit.

Fair point DG, I was happy with the maths, I just think that while you could say that to a Saints supporter he would point to their four wins and the argument is over.

The point is we have been very close to winning on a number of occassions but just havent gone on with it. The experience will change that down the line.

Teams with high average losing margins generally have very poor seasons, but there have been a few polar opposites, e.g. Port in 2004 (avg 51) and Carlton in 1995 (64).

Another statistic when comparing with the Saints is they've won 4 games & us nil.

That's the most important statistic of all. :(

Yes it is,I'd take Saint's losing margins & the 4 wins

Won't be such a big difference in wins between Tigers and Saints by the end of Round 16. In their next 7 games, Saints have to play 6 of the current top 7 teams, the other is against the Tigers. Could get messy for the Saints, although they have been completely ravaged by injury, the latest being their stalwart Robert Harvey.
