IMO this highlights the folly of recruiting KPP forwards and trying to turn them into KPP backs. Especially if they have hardly ever played back as a junior.
So in essence you are asking the kid to step up to AFL standard and play a position he has no idea about against the elite forwards in the country.
Sure it may work eventually but it takes longer and the chances of success are lessened. Especially if they are recruited from a mom traditional football state.

I was always under the impresion he could play, but then he did both his knees?

I was under the same impression. Another Tiger cruelled by career ending injuries. Free,Gwilliam, Wigney, Edwards, Charles, Merenda and there are a few more. Hopefully Cogs doesn't become one of them.
We have had some horrid luck. Maybe it is bad management? I don't know.

You are right, he was going ok at full back in the 4 (I think) games he played. Slammed into the goal post at Football Park & that was it, season & career over.

No career ending injury there.

Tigerdog, the issue might be that this happens quite a bit because the best junior footballers want to play FF and CHF rather than down back. I can't back this up with stats or examples from AFL ranks but throughout my years of junior footy, where I was crap and gutless btw, it was always the case.

I thought it was a chronic knee problem. Every chance I am wrong.

Yeah I agree. But IMO there is a case for recruiting natural backman. Not only will they be ready to go sooner because they already know how to play on the best forwards in the elite competition, but alsothey don't have to learn a new position at a much, much higher level.

Look at the RFC. McGuane, Richo, Riewoldt, Pattison, Hughes, Schulz. All played as forwards at elite junior level.
Only McGuane-who was coming from a mile back in terms of development anyway and still has a way to go- from that list even resembles a KPP back (and that's a debate that will go on here at PRE for a few years).
I am still of the opinion he would really show people what he can do if he had the chance to play forward, but than with Richo, Schulz, Patto, Reiwoldt, Hughes and whichever CHF we recruit in this years draft, I doubt he will get the chance any time soon.

Now, Polak and Thursfield. Both played as defenders as juniors, both the most likely looking KPP's we have.
Coincidence?

The sad part is, one we traded for and the other was a rookie list punt.

Everyone is screaming our backline needs attention. That is because we have neglected to recruit genuine, natural KPP backs for way too long. Might be time to address that.

Scotty Turner, we've never had such a big loss to injury
