Make or break year for the #4?

because then we would have 3 taggers in the side at once and no one winning the footy, with polo coming back aswell cant see it happening

im not jm's biggest fan ian but he is good at what he does and is miles better than raines in rebounding from d50, it doesnt mean i agree with the jm pickup though because i feel a fit connors could of done the same job
Wouldnt have to play or 3 as taggers an I would like to think that Polo will become a much more attacking player,Sydney have used Ablett,Mathews an Kirk all as lock down players in a very succesful way.

I do see all 3 been able to play on different types though an it no harm having 3 in the team who can do a job if needed

i just dont see raines in the middle anytime soon, if terry thought he was a future option then he would of given him a go late in the season but instead played him as a kp backmen

its either hbf or coburg for raines imo

I really hope Rines can bounce back this year.
As a young player he is one we need to be making the next step.
A shift to the midfield might be just the ticket, I hope so.

Pick 60..70 or something in 2003 draft;
Watched him play a game for Coburg out at Willimastown in March04; No left side of the body at all;
Got an oppotunity round 22, 2004; Improved on various apsects of his game at Coburg in 2005 and was touted as the big improver for 2006; Some judges around the club were spot on;
Obviously from some accounts here, his form went backwards and now finds himself in a make or break year;
Sounds harsh but has enough fuel in the tank to move forward again;
Got some real tough assignments last year (does the Rievoldlt one come to mind?) - Is that a coach or player call? ;)

the chaffey analogy is a good one i mean he was missing targets left right and centre last year...oh thats right that was because he was playing on riewoldt ::)

i dont have him in my best 22 anymore until he starts to show some better form/ he has it in him but he's become very one dimensional.

Granted McMahon's recruitment has put pressure on Raines but to suggest Casserley and JON are any threat is laughable.

One hasn't even played a senior game yet and the other is struggling to say the least.

BTW, Raines is contracted until the end of 09'.

End Thread

Casserley (providing he can stay fit) will be on level terms, or have gone past Raines by seasons end.

His skills and decision making are much better than Raines.

Raines has the runs on the board (quite a few in '06), casserly is yet to face a ball. I don't think a run of outs from raines last year automatically puts casserly in front off or even equal too raines just yet. Lets see what he can do first!

Was thinking the same thing DNT.  There's a big difference in the pressure and intensity in a senior AFL game compared to other levels.  Skills and decision making that stand out as a junior aren't necessarily executed the same in a senior AFL game.  Trav sounds impressive but I hope people are willing to give him a chance rather than expect perfection the minute he puts on a Richmond guernsey.

As for Rainesy...he'll be right. ;)

I worry a little for Rainesy...he is a bit in no mans land. Not really a great defensive player, is a tad slow, and his disposal is not good enough to be overly damaging. He really needs to find a niche in the side - and quick. Be it on ball, on a wing or whatever, when the likes of Cotchin, Conners, Casserly, Collins, Edwards etc really take the next step, he might be in a bit of trouble.

most of his opponents were a foot taller than him and 20 kgs heavier...

*smile*, name just one player was "a foot taller and 20kgs heavier" than Raines apart from Saint Nick.

Just because he played on Riewoldt doesn't mean he spent all year taking on KPP's.

Raines' spot isn't in question because of his defensive efforts (which I would describe are more "Gaspar-like" in execution), it is what he does OFFENSIVELY that will see him being left out for other players.

This is Richmond. If you are so used to players blindly bombing it straight ahead (and missing targets) after blindly running in a straight line (if he's lucky not to be caught) then I can't help you understand why Raines is a liability until he improves.

I hear he is a strong worker on the track, therefore I won't put it beyond him to succeed and iron out some of his flaws.

He played on Adam Goodes up in Sydney last year.
It was obvious from very early in the game that Goodes was too fast and too tall.

This thread is a tad premature. His name is being mentioned in the same breath as connors, cotchin and casserly. They have done nothing yet. Rainsy was 2nd best rookie behind Daniel Pearce. Not saying he doesn't need to improve. But to suggest he is under the pump is complete crap.

when im dozing off to sleep i sometimes go through the tigers list in my head to accelerate the process. sometimes i think who will we be getting rid of in the next couple of years. for some reason i always count raines as one. Not necessarily delisted, but i just can't see that he has the goods and i think he would be a good trade option IMO. we may be able to pick someone up that plays a different role.

Succinctly put OT :fing32

In the absence of injured, experienced players last year the kid was given man-sized jobs on high quality opposition. Never shirked the task or dropped his head under pressure. Has desire, strength and youth on his side to improve his disposal and evasive skills.

I believe that Raines has to somehow rediscover his 2006 form, but to do that he has to change the way he plays and sort out his kicking and decision making, it's a huge ask. I would have traded him at the end of last season while he still had some value. Another bad season and he'll be worth nothing. He could even prosper at another club which could suit his style of play and cover up his short comings, it worked for Rodan.

raines is a one trick pony

hard working with a defensive mindset, he takes players on and breaks the lines

his disposal and kicking under pressure are poor

he is predictable and everyone has worked this out

needs to get smarter to keep his spot IMO

i wonder if this will be being said about foley at the end of the season...it is not unusual to have a gun of a season then not so good the next. rainsey was given some formidable tasks this year..most of his opponents were a foot taller than him and 20 kgs heavier...rainsey will be alright i think :)
if the last 4 or 5 games of last yr is any indicator foley is in for a tough yr. hes going to have a yr where he learns to cope with heavy tags i dont expect him to be anywhere near as prominent this yr. the trouble for nathan he hasnt got blokes around him to help him out.

Once again you ignore basic facts to continually sprout negativity ad nauseam.

In the last 5 games of 2007 Richmond flogged Collingwood and Essendon, and played well against West Coast away and the Saints. Foley was best on ground against the Pies and got the 3 Brownlow votes. He was also among our best players in 3 of the other 4 games. The only shellacking we got was against Geelong in Round 18. In that game Foley got 35 possessions, better than any other player that day.

Simmonds played a bit role only against Geelong and not at all in our final four matches. Pattison missed the Geelong game, with Graham our main ruck.

Sheesh.

I dont think there is too much pressure on him to perform, because he has a crack. His skills under pressure are definitly questionable which correlate with his decision making under pressure. Composure isnt part of everyone's game, so maybe a go up front might be the way to go.

He is a good player and deserves the right to have a crack, I think there are many other players in the team that dont deserve a spot ahead of him.
