Marlion Pickett!

He was in a car crash and air lifted to hospital. I can't find any news source that isn't paywalled though. And the 12 foot ladder doesn't work with murdoch news.

This is what I don't get.

Wouldn't they have arrested him as soon as he stepped off the plane?
Yep, either that or not long after he had arrived. Wouldn’t have been hard for Police to find him at the team hotel or training the day before the match.

I too am a bit confused by that element.

Richmond dual premiership star Marlion Pickett has been dramatically arrested over alleged burglary charges just hours after he helped lead his club to victory in Perth.
Pickett was on Sunday remanded in custody over a series of alleged burglary charges dating back to December last year.
He is due to face Perth Magistrates Court Monday for a bail hearing.
His manager last night confirmed Pickett would fight the charges.
West Australian police confirmed Midland detectives had charged a 31-year-old man with four counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of stealing and three counts of criminal damage during commercial burglaries between December 2022 and January 2023.
Richmond said on Sunday night in a statement it would support Pickett who was in Perth over the weekend and played a key role in the club’s 15 point victory over Fremantle on Saturday night.
Pickett had reportedly stayed on in WA to visit family after his teammates left, according to reports in the West Australian.
The Richmond statement released shortly after 8.15pm on Sunday stated: “The Club will continue to support Marlion and his family while these matters are dealt with.
“As this matter is now before the courts, the Club will not be making any further comment.”

Pickett’s manager Anthony Van Der Wielen told the Herald Sun in a statement his client would defend himself against the charges.
“In response to the allegations, Marlion has a strong intent to defend himself against the charges.
“Due to the ongoing legal nature of the proceedings, Marlion, or myself will not be able to provide any further details, comment or clarification about the matter at this stage.
We understand and respect the public’s interest in this matter, but we also implore all to respect the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, and to allow the legal proceedings to follow their due course without prejudice,” the statement read.
Pickett played an extraordinary role in Richmond’s 2019 premiership victory after being selected in the mid-season draft before playing his first AFL game in that year’s Grand Final.
Pickett became an instant cult start after becoming the first player in 67 years to debut in a Grand Final.
Pickett was able to turn his life around by signing a two-year deal worth $500,000 a season after playing in a second successive premiership in 2020 after his first full season in football.
Pickett was out of contract this season after signing a one-year deal for 2023.
The father-of-four has been open about his criminal past before and his stint in jail but had been seen as an inspiration for his capacity to use football to change his life.

Pickett has previously spoken about his time in Perth’s hardcore Acacia Prison, saying “it woke me up”.
“It woke me up and changed my perspective on who my true friends were because I didn’t really have anyone apart from my missus come and visit me,” he said in an interview with the Herald Sun in June 2021.
“Having her in my corner was so important. We all change, but if you really want to change you’ve got to do it for yourself and I had something (family and footy) to change for,” he said.
After another strong year playing in a variety of roles, including kicking the match-winner against GWS last week, Pickett was again set to be strongly rewarded for his form and durability.
With 70 games under his belt he would have hoped to play 100 games at Richmond, although with a premiership to his name, he was already a Tigers life member.
The Noongar man has also become an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth ambassador at Richmond’s Korin Gamadji Institute.

We know nothing of what happened. I would suspect he has been charged because someone he knows was involved, whether there is any substance to the allegations we just don't know.

We will have to let this play out but clearly Marlion is stating he is innocent, just hope he gets a fair chance to defend himself.

Doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t take 5 months to gather evidence does it? Must not have much on him such as cctv/security footage. Wasn’t like he was hiding or no one knew where he was or he could just disappear for them to wait until he was in WA again. Everyone knows what he looks like

btw -- Midland Police, who have charged Marlion, have had an interesting reputation for a very long time ....
Yep lets blame the cops.... If it was a white geelong player everyone here would be calling for him to be hanged.

What a ridiculous post.

In this country we are innocent until proven guilty and that is a principle we should vigorously defend. You are making a presumption of guilt with no facts at all. You are speculating in a way bordering on stereotypical racism.

He may be guilty and he may not be, the courts will decide that, not *smile* keyboard warriors.

I don’t defend criminals, but I defend the right of someone not to be assumed to be one until our legal system confirms it rather than making assumptions on social media.
If it was a white geelong player everyone here would be calling for him to be hanged.

I was out for dinner and my phone lit up like a Christmas tree. Absolutely shocked to hear the news.

But like others have said it just doesn’t make sense. Why would he get involved in such activities whilst having his life on track and earning good coin.

There must be more to this story.

Family loyalty? Brothers/uncles/cousins have history as well don’t they? Maybe they pressured him into helping? Maybe he refused but still got caught up in stuff? Maybe he didn’t participate but knew enough about what was happening to be considered an accessory? Who knows?

Just keeping fingers crossed. The fact he’s been charged and not just arrested is damning.

I'm flat as a tack. Just been watching the replay and thinking that this could well be the last game he plays for us.

It's a bit of a selfish take considering there are other parties affected far more than a member of the RFC faithful. It's an awful situation for everyone.

No doubt they’ll be a story to this , however if any part of it’s true , we need to move Marlion on asap, this has the potential to cause massive problems , going to be a lot of people in the club losing trust , then there’s going to be supporters of Marlion ….just a real *smile* situation no matter what.

in saying that , let’s just wait and see what really happened and why
