Match Preview Vs Hawthorn

Can't say I know what Wallace was thinking. For much of the game our defence was Schulz, Raines and Roach.

He never had a plan to win, but wasn't playing a serious game for development purposes either.

Foley and Jackson playing at the centre bounce?

now a positive or three. Raines good. Schulz good, Humm worth a second look.

Didn't notice Howat much, Roach, well, not yet but keep trying this year.

Lastly, My apologies to those who I was supposed to meet up with at the game, apparently riding down the eastern freeway in a thunderstorm, on a motorbike, does NOT do good things to mobile phones  :(

Cam had a spell on Batman. Bam! Kapowie! Splat! Didn't go too well for the debutant. A lot of our boys were given tough assignments today.

You've got to admire the way Wallet persevered with Roach on Williams. Maybe it didn't work out this game. It certainly looked an omi,ous matchup. But Roach did okay on the AFL's best small forward.

It was one of the worst games I've ever seen. We looked flat and rusty. We looked so underdone it was pretty funny at times.

It would be easy to single out P.Bowden. I'll give him a chance in the real season.

It was a good test for our youngsters. The Hawkers fielded a strong side (by their lofty standards) and came to play.

A lot of our younger players did nothing.

Hartigan had an error riddled game. He was targeted by Clarkson's panel and came up short. His two inside fifties yielded a Richmond mark and a turnover. I might have missed a couple. I didn't stat him today but I will from the replay. He made a fatal error (and a bunch of others.) He took a mark just outside the aerc in space and he didn't run. The mistake is not in getting caught. It's giving up. I think BH will be greatly improved by the hitout.

You have gota kick a score to win Dyer'ere and i think it really is ( to take words out of TGN's last post) groundhog day. Skills will develop but i honestly think we will struggle until we have another big man up in the forward 50 that can make a impact.

..and we all know who that is. But he did a reasonable job at CHB today too. Yep the fast track to the Schulz Express has started. Promisingly too thank God because I agree, Patto struggled.

;) I'm not saying a word ToO but you know what i mean.....

patto has a long way to go

anyone who thinks he is our first choice chf is fooling themselves

Brad Ottens was more involved in the game than Patto according to Silvagni

tuck and johnson were great

difference was probably Gaspar not playing - Roach on Williams instead

Rodan was O.K, Raines good, P.Bowden good

Foley did not take his opportunity

Where do we stand in relation to what we've seen from Essendon, Brisbane, Melbourne, Bulldogs, North and Sydney and the NAB Cup games they've played ?

Ess and Bris look miles ahead to me.

At last somebody had the balls to answer it.

Only other match (in parts) I've seen was last night's at GC.We're a long way behind those 2 sides in comparison.

Positives today - Schulz,Tuck,Delidio & the last time I'll see us in that silver/grey gear this year.

Realise only February but disappointed we continue to ignore doing the small but important selfless team things like shepherd , block, screen or even talk to help protect the ball carrier (let alone tackle)...Still,room to improve,I guess as we deserved to get beat by 10 goals today rather than get as close as we did.

It is only a NAB game and anyone jumping off now would be foolish. There's plenty of time to be ripe for the season's start.

However, its not without saying that from what little we've seen of the other teams who have played so far, we aren't looking as sharp, nor does our execution relevant to our game plan look as good as theirs at the moment. Hawthorn didn't look all that much better than us at times today, but of the 3 other games I've seen so far, a number of those teams seem to be ahead of us in terms of their off-season status.

Pretty much just got in...haven't seen a dedicated match thread.
My two cents worth, we looked rushed and lacked any semblance of composure when we had the ball.  Yes first hit out, but with real time game pressure a lot of the guys didn't even look the grade.  Sugar was the standout in terms of good play, although has a tendancy to travel wide and force forwards to lead to pockets.  Sarge looked good, Raines had a fair crack, Simmo got better as the ame progressed. Richo...boy I really don't know what goes through his mind once he crosses the line and the siren sounds, Roach...I have been a continual supporter, but he should not be allowed anywhere near the back line. Alas i can not recall one instance where he was first to the ball...and we all know he has some toe about him. Zoned off at the wrong times, lead to poor positions....it almost looked like he was deliveratly positioning himself not to recieve a possession at times.  A big, big concern for Tommy.  The entire team...the amount of flat hands when attempting easy marks was just mind-boggling....I dunno, I really, really dunno what to make of what I watched today ???

Can you add that today is the 25th FEBRUARY and that a majority of teams are never 100% fit until Round 1 comes.

Did anybody with clear eyes realise we were undermanned today compared to Hawthorn ??

I'm actually glad we lost today so that we can concentrate on practice matches instead of this hyped-up FLAB CUP.

If you don't believe me, then ask Carlton of 2005.

I have to ask and can some one explain why do we make the same mistakes year in year out?

Maybe because the players have the same mentality as you you FLOG!

Get over your sour sour grapes Felix. getting boring. Do you think the Swans are shattered by their loss today? No. neither should we. It is a televised practice game. FFS

We are re-building yet you want success NOW!!!!!! You seem to be against what we have been screaming out for for the last 25 years, and that is playing the kids and having a crack. Do you suggest we go for players like Fevola, Camporeale, and Heffernan, and go for the ultimate success? You are one of the those people that are never happy, and for that I pity you. Enjoy the ride, through the highs and the lows. Just relax a little!

The Richmond side I saw tonight would be pretty much the worst side in the comp, Redders. ATM.

Given the strength of sides fielded by clubs so far, I'd have thought that Hawthorn and Essendon stood out as poor performers. Another second-half fade-out by the rather strong Bummers against a pretty lacklustre if youthful Brisbane.

Our players looked shocking, skill, speed and fitness-wise.

This doesn't worry me at all in itself but I thought some of the younger players looked a long way off.

I was critical of the way we handled our injuries last year. This year it looks like we're butching it out early and we're going to find out who CAN. We're not going to guess. We're going to test. Roach (the doomed matchup) was by no means the standout failure of the evening. Newman on Roughead was a bit of fun, too. But we'll find a player or two to give some respite to Tuck, Coughlan and Johnson.

FWIW a depleted Richmond side with experimental matchups played appalling football against a defensively well-drilled and at times authoritative Hawthorn to go down by ten points.

In February.

On Schulz, I know it was only Franklin but JS did give him a hiding. And Franklin's exactly the sort of player that can stretch the Sarge, with his running game. Most of you will have noticed that Jay often gets a bit lost against hard leading players. Encouraging stuff.

Geez Felix. Carlton look like they couold possibly upset Geelong. Cats are done and dusted this year. High draft picks for them ey? I mean after all, it is the NAB Cup right?????

Yer BA - it is all doom and gloom after one NAB match mate. Might as well pick up our footy and go home now.... :hihi :hihi I just cant believe some comments here tonight - you would of thought that one especially thought we were going to get to the Granny this year.... :hihi :hihi Soome good positives coming out of todays game was Tuck who played a mighty game and players such as raines and humm showing something. We could of got blown out of the dome at one stage but they DID come back. It does show something different to previous years....

I was at the game today, came home (attempting to exorcise the grumps with earbleed Sex Pistols on the way and a large wad of fish and chips) and watched the recording I made also (as i see virtually nothing at the games, just like to be there sometimes).

My observations (if anybody gives a heck)...

- Overall it was a touch too Frawleyesque for my liking - most notably the over-handballing thing.

- Matthew (love him) needs to be recalibrated.

- Weeble is foxing, whilst being in most everything when allowed the chance he didn't have any great statistical impact. Hopefully this will change (i.e. he'll be given a chance - he has courage to spare...)

- SO good to see Rodan back and showing signs of what we have to look forward to this year - and before the naysayers start up I mean good stuff.

- Good signs from Raines and, early on, Humm. Roach had it tough today with his assignment and the romantic in me hopes he'll break through.

- Those 'silver' guernseys are HIDEOUS. I designed an infinitely funkier alternative strip in five minutes last night.

- Joel, Joel, Joel. That beard makes you look like a hippy. Is that why you're kicking and marking like one? The RFC should spring for some electrolysis so he can't make such a mistake ever again.

- That Bateman guy, aesthetically at least, makes Anna Nicole Smith look like the epitome of class.

- I'm not wrist-slashing yet, and am grateful for the comeback today as it gave some hope - and acknowledge the lack of, especially, many key backmen, however I feel today's game was a reality check as to any short term (like this year) GF hopes.

- Mobile phones, motorbikes and torrential rain explain a lot.  ;)

Here's to an improved 2006 for all at Tigerland, wherever we may end up.

Ms Tantie.
