with all the talk of the anzac day clash being played at the dome because the MCG turf might not be laid in time has me worried about the state our home ground wil be post Comm Games.

Lets hope they (whoever it is) gets our "G" back into the state it was PRE Comm Games and not some patchwork quilt debarcle like the dome went through. If theyre already having problems then you'd be right to start getting a tad nervous.

The MCG turf has been removed and replaced with different grass for the opening ceremony.

They have 40 hours after the opening ceremony to remove the grass and replace if for the games.

The grass they are using for the games is a mix of couch and ryegrass grown in a sand base in a polypropylene synthetic fibre.  That makes it suitable to be played on immediately it's laid, so is suitable for things like shotput and javelin.

That turf will remain there until March 26th when it removed and the G will be covered with 8000 square metres of the original and new turf ready for football.

The ground should be like brand new but there's a very small time frame to get it all done in time.

(For the stats people:  800 rolls of turf, 29 semi loads, 12 drivers delivering around the clock)

Edit: The 8000 square metres of turf is for the Commos. There will be a complete resurface of the G, including leveling a sand base and 20,000 square metres of turf for footy season.

Haha Anduril. We have friends involved with the turf replacement.

if they can do that in 40 hours, surely they can replace to whole thing in 30 days? actually who cares about the anzac day game, we'll have 33 days til our game against carlton at the G...

The Commo Games grass only covers the bit inside the running track, once this circus leaves town the whole running track has to be ripped up, the front rows of the Southern Stand have to be put back, and a whole new grass surface - along with drainage etc. - for the entire MCG arena has to be installed.

Not a trivial task, and if there are any periods of inclement weather the whole process will grind to a halt.

excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't drainage already be there underneath the track? if not, it should still be in the middle grassy section of the oval where they have the javelin, discuss, etc? and even if they don't get it done in time, why don't they just grass the whole area until after the grand final and then lay the drainage? or do it bit by bit during the week of the footy season until completed?
