PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

The way people have been wishing for a few names in the draft, yet most would have seen limited, if any, game time of them, and also people claim that a certain player, whose name is fast becoming a 4 letter word to me, is the best in the league makes me wonder how much luck and external influences help shape a player's future.

There are probably dozens and dozens of kids who would make it at AFL level yet they don't get the chance. I doubt most of us here would know how much better the players favoured to go top 5 are than those expected to go later in the draft. Same thing with the best player tag. Someone can win a few Brownlows and Normies and suddenly (naturally) their media profile rises and their value sky rockets, yet there are probably a dozen players who could equally be considered best in the league.

It certainly pays for a player to stand out in a crowd and get their name mentioned in the media to my way of thinking. In the end they still have to perform but it does give them a better chance to do so.
