Terry has got to change this culture that has been evident over a number of years. He's barely been able to do that so far..

Do think their is any correlation with the style some present AFL coaches played their footy and the way their teams go about it?

Interesting Thrills'n'skills

Wallace had the Bulldogs of the mid-late 90s drilled as a dirty snarling pack, who played with a siege mentality.
They had a game that thrived on physicality and intimidation, which I was hopeful of seeing instilled into Richmond when he was appointed.
This has been a major disappointment for me, that we still have the same meek and introverted mentality as the Frawley abomination.

Interesting Skills because from what we've seen so far of Terry it's quite the opposite..

Ironically from memory, Wallace the footballer was as tough as they come. A three time premiership player and four time best & fairest winner, Terry was the ultimate inside player.

Whilst not blessed with great footskills, his ability to extract the ball from the base of the pack and launch it forward was his strength. Terry never took a backwards step but he wasn't the prettiest player to watch.

It's strange then his leaning towards outside flankers and downhill skiers. He is yet to instigate some of that workrate and toughness he prided himself on as a player into this Richmond side.

It was no fluke Brisbane played in 4 Grand Finals and they were the most initimidating team on the field as well.
Headcase Headland was from theis Brisbane culture as was Solomon from the Bombers good era.

I agree with this thread that we need to have senior players stand up or draft in a mongrel with skill.

I wouldn't concern myself with Solomon, the bloke would have to be one of the stupidest to have ever pulled on a jumper, the only thing he has going for him is his perceived tough guy image. Headland is another one who has anger management issues. For the Tigers Jackson doesn't mind a go and Schulz isn't afraid to get into it at times.

Brisbane 2001-2003 are exactly the right mix.
Tough mongrels and skillful.

Think of the intimidators in that side.

Michael
The Scotts.
Brown
Johnson
Pike
Voss
Lynch
etc.
etc.

Tough as nails with the skill to go with it.

The players I'm referring to aren't puffy chested headcases but they do have to physically intimidate their opponents.

We have very few of the above type and the opposition know it.

Not that I saw. Newman got pushed over after the punch, repeatedly, and not one player came in to knock Solo-man off him. I was disappointed.

Glad it wasn't just me General.
It was almost comical what Slowman was able to get away with.
I kept waiting for one of our players to rush over and get him off Chris but the cavalry never came.

I am DISGUSTED that no-one came to fly the flag for Newman when this happend.

Actually this made me furious! :veryupset

What sort of message does this send to the younger group?

Hardly any of our boys step in when a team mate is getting roughed up. Probably the only few I've seen recently are Jacko, Kingy and Foley. It really bugs me that they don't stand up for each other. No need to be a thug and go around belting blokes but if someone is on the receiving end his team mates should be there to back him up.

Not only did Solomon belt Newman in the guts but he also gave foley's nose a fair rub in the dirt after laying a tackle. Things like that happen the boys should be there letting the offender it's not on, show a bit of aggro :boxing

yep we are on the same page. The one they lost was was also the one Port stood up to them & also the bris spine had massive injuries woes in that game that in the end was one game too many for some player's bodies.

Also the issue with Newman, as others I thought this was lame.

I add also when Headland kicked a goal and bumped Polo & he went down knowing the bump was coming, ohhh the shame of it all, the shame.

What do you want? Someone to come in and belt Soloman and have the ump reverse the free kick?

Or come in and puff his chest out and act like a peacock?

To me Freezer has the right idea.

Gotta learn to attack the ball a bit harder first. When we can do that, we can start to worry about peripheral issues like Soliman.

YES!!!!

Otherwise it shows mental weakness, which we know that our boys have in spades.

Attack the footy harder first, of course, but you have to show that your sticking up for your mates....................

YOU JUST HAVE TOO!

this seems to be the prevailing feeling on this board and while i agree i also think theres other variables involved.

a) was there anyone in the area that could of come in to help newmo?
b) if you were'nt in the area, would you leave your man to run over and help newmo knowing that the ball then goes to your man and you watch in vain as he gallops upfield towards goal?
c) by the time you get the fracas it could be all over and once again your man is left free upfield?

there are alot of reasons why someone could of/should of but everyone just assumes its because they're meek and mild. We all see it loud and clear on the pubs wide screen Trinitrons where the camera zooms in on a little niggle on the halfback line but in reality its a tiny piece of real estate on a 150mtr footy ground.
