There is an article in the Sun today on Distance gained carrying and kicking the ball.

I think a lot of people here might find the results suprising.

The stat is based on distance gained towards goal (sidewards and backwards kicks only counts for forward distance)

Team - How far the club has run and kicked the ball

1) Collingwod    41052m
2) Hawthorn      39878
3) Essendon      38469
4) West Coast   38426
5) Carlton          38361
6) St Kilda          38181
7) Freo               37522
8) Richmond       37249
9) Adelaide        36934
10) Kanga          36628
11) Geelong       36558
12) Bulldogs       36033
13) Port             35699
14) Melbourne   34802
15) Brisbane      33443
16) Sydney         31057

Players with most gained
1) Ben Johnson           Coll   3761m     76%
2) Andrew Mcleod       Ade   3252       66%
3) Jordan McMahon     WB    3233      53%
4) GREG TIVENDALE     Rich  3116       67%
5) Des Hedland            Freo 3049     72%
6) Andrew Walker        Carl  3018     59%
7) Joel Corey              Gee    2990    69%
8.) Lenny Hayes          St K    2927   73%
9) Shannon Grant       Kang   2925  64%
10)Cameron Brue       Melb    2920   76%

Interesting Stuff - Shows who you need to shut down for delivery.

"Tiger Greg Tivendale once the favourite whipping boy, has gained 3116m for his team. But it's not all one-way trafficc and downhill skiing. The rejuvenated Tivendale tops the tackle cout at Richmond as well"

Tivendale has been one of our best this year. He has a higher hurt factor than most of our midfielders. If only he could stand up a bit better in tackles and not fall like a stack of cards.

I'm just trying to imagine how they keep track of this without every player wearing a tracking device..

Feel sorry for the poor dude who has to record this.

How do you reconcile Tivendale averaging about 20 possies per game, many of which are run and kick long type possessions with someone like Cameron Ling, who gets closer to 30 each week, most of which are short kicks and backwards handballs?  Ling offers a more physical presence than Tivva but games are now being played in the wide open spaces, reducing the value of physicality.

The 70 metre player has suddenly become a valuable commodity again.

Im rather surprised dean rioli isnt on this list!!! :cutelaugh

Next thing they will have a metres gained assist stat for the player who releases the run and carry guy into space with the initial handpass or chip kick.
Only one stat I really need to know, DID WE WIN. All other stats are irrelevant.

Just wondering exactly how this works. Is it metres gained towards goal as the crow flies or length of the run and kick?

For example, Tivva's run and pass to Pettifer for the first goal on Sat night was a 20-25m run towards the boundary followed by a 50m kick across goal from one forward pocket to the other. Pettifer was only about 30m closer to goal than Tivva was when he first won the ball. Does this count as 30m or 70m gained?

They might be using Pythagoras' Theorem, Trigonometry and differential calculus to work all this out!

Maybe Fudge can help out if he is reading this.

Yep, you can do that.

Or can can try to understand *how* we won the match, or how we lost the match. You can try to understand what can be done better. So how do you measure whether you do better? The scoreboard is useful. Getting more of the ball and doing more with it is also useful and maybe a whole lot of other things that you reckon are useful in determining whether you're at an advantage against the opposition.

If you want to stay ignorant, that's OK with me, otherwise we have stats to help us.

Totally agree with your comments H. Me and my bro were saying the exact same thing after watching the replay. Tivva's and Hyde are the 2 players at the moment who are causing damage when running with the ball. I don't think Tivva's will improve his leg strength or tackling (note Raine's when opposition trying to tackle him) but he is nonetheless playing an important part in our attacking forays this year.

Still making fundamental errors but a huge improvement to his form in general.

Hopefully Meyer can take the place of this type of player in the near future - time will tell.

Darksiders don't like stats as they tell us Tiv, Pets, Kellaway and others are playing well. On that, apparently in the Footy Record stats K2 has the most effective kick ratio at Richmond. Darksiders say he is a crap kick though.

In thhis case, it'd be 30m gained. However, if it was a defender kicking away from the opposition's goal, it'd be the distance from the goal, even if the ball is kicked along the boundary line. Or at least that's my understanding of it after speaking with the dude that came up with the numbers.

grubbers along the ground shouldn't count.

Anyone else notice Tivendale's right foot kicks that actually were to the side's advantage?

In the speed of the matches recently it is easy to miss, but it happened (quite a bit, actually.......)

B1 became a much better player when he developed "other side" skills a couple of years ago, if Tivendale has done something similar then it can only help him - now all we need is a few other "one sided" players to add that sort of versatility to their kit.........
