Mid Season Drafts?

Hello Fellow PRE`s,
After Doing the Herald Sun Fans Survey I saw a question on Mid Season drafts. I was wondering about peoples thoughts on this Issue. I would like to see the introduction of a Mid season Draft to help clubs settle their lists after retirements and injuries. For example if a club had someone retire half way thought the year and had a long injury list i beleive that a draft should be in place so the club could have a full list for the rest of the season. Then at the end of the year they can then deicide who to keep and delist before the main draft.

It could work both ways.

Positively, a side in real contention for a premiership could strengthen an achilles heel.

Negatively, a side outside of premiership contention may look for a short term fix for a long term problem.

I've always liked the idea of a mid-season draft. Bring it back I say.

One thing I think you should be able to do is trade picks in future drafts. Say two years in advance drafts picks can be swapped.

So for example to get Chris Judd we would trade,

2007 1st round pick and 3rd round pick
2008 Ist rounder.

Would make it much easier for deals to be done and also for smart clubs to be able to forecast the depth in future clubs.

in our situation it would enable us to pick up a ruckman, would be handy

It would only allow us to pick a ruckman from the left-overs available & nominated in that draft.
It wouldn't allow us to pick a junior ruckman.
It wouldn't allow us to pick up a ruckman in contract on another club's list.

A strategically thinking top club could drop a nag of a ruckman from their list knowing that we'd be stupid enough to pick the nag as a band-aid measure.

Yep. We could pick up Barry Brooks from StKilda.

Mid-season drafts help top clubs about to go into a finals series, not us in our current predicament.

Or, in a seperate move, convince Staff to come back for 6 months. Surely a few retirees from last year would be temtped to come back for a 6 month spell if a club had a specific need.

In NSW League has a mid-season contract/trade window. The amount of acrimony about this player not being confirmed a place next year and that star now to play next year for another club and having let his club and team mates down - all with a number of matches and finals to play is amazing. Really poor in my opinion. Horrible actually.

What if the mid-season draft was limited to players over the age of 21 but not currently on an AFL list?

It would allow clubs the opportunity to draft a player who is performing well for an AFL team or an SANFL team, for example, and would boost the AFL club to 45 players. Someone like Jake King or Aaron Edwards could have been drafted in this way last year.

If there was a mid-season draft now, Richmond might draft someone like David Fanning for the rest of the season and give him an opportunity to show his wares for 10 games. He could be dropped off the list again at the end of the season if he didn't work out, or upgraded if he did.

It might be a way of boosting the pfofile of the VFL, if players who just missed out knew there was another chance for them mid-season. It might also give a club a chance to pick up someone who is a rapid improver in their backyard like say Nick Carnell has been at Coburg or somewhere in the VFL/SANFL/WAFL, or even in a counrty league somewhere.
