Earlier in the week Mike Sheahan wrote the following article titled "Tiger's Picks No Match For Dogs":
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,,25335731-5014674,00.html
Included with the article was a diagram outlining the drafting of the respective clubs! At the bottom of this post i've included a summary of this diagram, but unlike Sheahan, i've included 2004 as it's quite relevant (in fact most relevant)! I can only assume that Sheahan came up with the idea of the article and then on doing his research realised the facts didnt stack up, but decided to push ahead anyway!
I'm not supporting our drafting of the last few years - far from it, but if one fact does come out of this article, it's that the strength of the Bulldogs doesn't come from their drafting of the last 5 years, but from the period before that - Yes, whether we like it or not - Wallace's period!
In fact, looking at the drafting over the last 5 years one wonders how the dogs are anywhere near it!
2004: NATIONAL DRAFT
Richmond
Richmond: Delideo - Tambling - Meyer - Patterson - Polo - McGuane - Linbach - Mark Graham
Bulldogs: Griffin - Williams - Tiller - Wells - McCormack
PRE-SEASON
Knobel (pre-season)
ROOKIE
Thursfield
Nayna - Morris
Summary 2004: The Dogs had 3 picks inside the top 22, and despite the wraps on Griffin, he still hasn't done jack all. In fact i wonder why Tambling has copped the pasting he's had when you consider Griffin went a pick before him. Statistically, they are basically line ball, it's just that Tambling was considered by many as better then Delideo prior to the draft! Williams has hardly got on the park (pick 6), Wells (pick 22) never played a game, Tiller is struggling. Morris as a rookie elevation from the previous draft has been good, but i'd rate our efforts at the table as better!

2005 - NATIONAL DRAFT
Richmond: JON - Hughes - Casserley
Bulldogs: Higgins - Addison
ROOKIE ELEVATION:
Richmond: Foley - Thursfield
Bulldogs: Morris (see prev draft)
2005 Summary: This draft thus far has been a disater for our club and the dogs are clearly ahead here! Foley was taken i think in the 2003 rookie draft!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2006 - DATIONAL DRAFT
Richmond: Polak(for pick 8) - Reiwoldt (pick 13 which was pick 8) - Edwards
Bulldogs: Everitt - McDougall(for pick 29) - Akermanis (for pick 34)
PRE-SEASON
Matt White
2006 Summary - The Dogs have got jack so far from this draft. Everitt is developing but very slowly if at all. We certainly won out with Reiwoldt as far as i'm concerned despite Everitt going 2 picks earlier. McDougall (waste), Aka, the stands would have been pulled down if we wasted a 2nd round pick on someone his age. For him to pay off, the Dogs have to win the flag this year. Polak has been servicable, and you can't blame the club for him being hit by a tram.

2007 - NATONAL DRAFT
Richmond: Cotchin - Rance - Morton(for pick 35)
Bulldogs: Grant - Ward - Hudson(for pick 30) - Reid
PRE-SEASON
Richmond: Kingsley (WTF)
ROOKIE ELEVATION
Richmond: King - Graham
Bulldogs: Harbrow
PRE-SEASON
Richmond: Gourdis
WB: Welsh
2007 Summary: Ward and Reid look promising for the dogs, but i think we've got them covered here with Cotch, Rance, morton and Kingsley (arrrrrr)!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008 - NATIONAL DRAFT
Richmond Vickery - Post
WB: Cordy - Roughead - Jones
PRE-SEASON
Richmond: Cousins
ROOKIE:
Richmond: Browne Nahas
WB: Picken
IN SUMMARY OF EVERYTHING:
What's Sheahan on about claiming that the Dogs have towelled us up at the draft table over this period when their success is clearly coming from drafts prior to 2005? Other than the 2005 draft, i think the Dogs should be burying their heads just as deeply as us!
Players drafted in 2004 are still only around the 21 yr old mark, well before their peaks! Our real weakness comes from the fact that we got next to nothing from the drafts prior to 2004.
The real problem is whether the current crop of draftees become perenial losers due to the lack of success attributable mainly to the drafting period prior to 2004!
