Mission: Get Leigh Matthews

we can't find a team mate let alone a "next clarko". how about a no risk strategy for once

Nice sentiment.

The only problem is, I'm struggling to come up with an option that the Tigers could pursue that wouldn't carry risk.

Its the nature of the beast. I think I'd give Matthews a wide berth though.

No thanks. Mathews proved all he needed to prove in terms of coaching ability with Brisbane. I dont think we want someone coasting into retirement and I dont think Mathews would want to end his career at a club like Richmond. Same for Malthouse (angry whinger).

Fresh coaching blood for me - bring on hardnut Hardwick.

I don't care who we get, as long as he gets players playing as a team, not as individuals, with good footskills hard tackling and a nasty winning attitude!!!

I'd be comfortable with Matthews, if he really had the passion to coach again and would accept a 2 year contract.

I'd go for Matthews for 3 years. That said, whoever coaches the Tigers from 2010 onwards has to be a REAL HARDNUT. Somebody who is prepared to tell the players what is going to be and if the players don't bloody like it or won't do it, show them the door.

Biggest problem really is that no club is prepared to sack a player during a playing season before it leaves them one short. That means the player can slack off, go and do some study, find a job whatever, do the minimum in terms of training and playing, still get well rewarded for it, so where is the incentive motivation for a player to actually perform.

Clubs should be allowed to sack players during the season the AFL should set a limit on this say 3 players, then allow Clubs to pick up a couple of rookie players during the season instead to cover those sacked. That way players are on official notice that they can be sacked by a club if they don't or won't perform, do something stupid like Didak etc. Right now players can pretty much do anything and get away with, whilst the poor ole member, sponsor and supporters have to put up with such antics.

Nope, its time Richmond got tough, that starts at Board Level by finding a REAL HARDNUT coach, a coach is not going to take no for an answer and will drill the players into the ground if necessary to get the message thru that winning is the only way to go.

Chances of that happening, I reckon ZERO.

Nothing against Leigh or Micky M or Sheeds but I too am in the group that says go for someone new. Hardwick really irritated me while a player because he got under the skin of opponents & rival supporters (bit like Sheeds in his playing days?). The Clubs that he has been involved in since retiring are glowing in their comments about him. Being a premiership coach is not a recipe for success with Richmond. 2 former Premiership coaches had their coaching records tarnished while in charge of us...Alan Jeans & Robert Walls spring to mind.

Someone at some stage had the balls to employ a young Tommy Hafey against a lot of peoples perceptions at the time...............

Williams was fairly young when he got the job at Port, Bomber Thompson at Geelong, Malthouse when at the dogs, Roos was recently retired etc.etc.etc. You can't become a long term coaching legend if you get your first gig in your 40's

Gotta do it at some stage.................

Hardwick would be my choice out of the unproven,s.However i reckon he,ll end up at Port if he has a choice out of us and Port.

Agree been thinking the same. Lot of talk on here for Hardwick but he looks a monty for Port for mine.

That said, if it comes to looking for a new coach you find the best one you believe is available and you move the world to woo them. Nearly everyone has a price.

As much as I respect Leigh as a coach I'd rather others to coach the club when the time comes. I would like to see Mick to return to the club he played for. I think if Leigh coached he may overturn the list and we would have to rebuild and I think that would be going backwards. Mick seems to be able to get the best out of his players at his disposal and I think that is what we need. We have some very talented players that don't always use their skills. Mick moves with the game and is a very smart coach.

Ok Brodders, is this better?

We'll win this week and the media vultures will be forced to move on.
We are probably on par with North so could well be 2-3 in just over a fortnight from now.
Even if we are not 2-3, people have to realise that the skill deficiences in the players cannot be resolved with a magic wand, by a new coach or an existing one.
Those people clamouring for Matthews to replace Wallace immediately should read his article on AFL website in the past week where he says the key to a successful coaching career is 80% players and 20% coach.
In other words, if the club does not have the ability to recruit the quality of player to the standard required, it doesn't matter how good your coach is.
That's from a four time premiership coach no less, so perhaps people should acknowledge the message in that statement.
Hardwick won't come mid year, if at all, so his urgers should all take a cold shoulder.
I am not Terry's greatest supporter but whilst he is the club figurehead and popular conduit for abuse, the club administration's failure to adequately fund and structure the recruiting department is the very obvious cause of our list problems.

Very well put. The fault is not just one person. removing that person will not suddenly solve our issues. However Terry is a part of the processs and he has had input into the recruitment selection process and therefore shoulders part of the balme in this department. Terry is the face, he does the media interviews, so he is going to cop a fair whack for others wrong-doings also , which can be a little unfair.

Leigh is the only one that ticks all the boxes.
1) Played in a premiership
2) Coached a premiership (at two different clubs)
3) And wont take crap rom anyone
4) Already has the respect of all concerned - remeber Crawfords remarks on Clarko - Essentially Clarko had to win over the team before they trusted him

Leigh is like Sheedy, might be good for a season but not long term

I doubt both will ever coach again
