Can't see why they'd pick up the worst pitcher in MLB last year for what, $7M when Guzman will surely be better?

Guzman has missed nearly a season and a half due to pitching related injuries.

I suppose the Trib knew that with a cast of crocks already lining the shelves (don't forget your old player Wade Millar is there too) they went for a guy who can eat innings.

However its one thing to eat innings when your ERA blows out to 7.23 :o there has to be a better and cheaper option you'd reckon.

I weep when I think of Dontrelle Willis and Ricky Nolasco throwing smoke for the fish when they were in the Cubs farm and traded for the departed Clement and Pierre.....gave away plenty for SFA left now in 2007 :frustration

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Yeah totally agree. It's one thing that *smile* me about the bigger teams is they have little faith or patience with their prospects.

Do you reckon that Boston will stick with Paplesmear as a starter or will they put him back to closing again if they blow the odd save?

He was phenominal as a closer last year...it must be tempting to leave him there?

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Nah, I hope and think they'll keep him as a starter. He's worth twice as much in the rotation and they need him long term with Schilling and Wake getting on. They've used high picks on HS closers the last two years (Hansen and Cox) so with any luck the system can produce what we need.

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Fair enough.

When I see them scratching about for seemingly second rate blokes like Benitez and Co it makes me wonder what will happen in an organization that won't be patient with a few blown saves.
I thought that the temptation might be to revert Paplebon to close and chase another starter.

Have the RSox enquired about La Troy Hawkins yet?
I'm sure he can do a job for you... ;D

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

13 days and counting...
Any chance the Royals will take the WS?

Clemens is losing more and more of my respect each article I see on him.
Just retire gracefully. You are an old man Roger.

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Too late. However the tool chooses to retire now has no chance of being graceful.

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Most of those odds seem about right.

I reckon the Angels are unders though at 13-1, and the Astros are way overs...31-1 seems crazy.
The bookies must see the departures of Clemens(likely),Bagwell and Pettite as defining.
I reckon they have one of the better bullpens in the NL,so might have a small nibble.
They also have NYM as NL favorites and I'm tipping the Dodgers will beat them to get to the WS.

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Let's just say that if it comes down to a one run lead and two innings to go, a tiring starter and well rested bullpen, I wouldn't trust *smile* GUMP GRADY! ;D

Perhaps they'll trade for La Troy Hawkins and give him a reason to not go to the pen :o

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Man I hate March. You think footy and baseball are here, but this is the longest wait of all.

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Stay calm Duckman...stay calm. The official start to the Season of Redford will soon be upon us !

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Yeah, didn't see this coming. The decision was made by the man himself which makes me like it. If it had have been the FO moving him back to the pen out of desperation I'd hate, but he was a closer in HS that the Sox tried to convert to a starter in the minors. After closing last year he obviously loves it so as long as he can handle the workload this should work out for the best. Now I just hope Lester is progressing as well as people say and that he's the 5th starter before too long so we don't have to put up with Tavarez.

Oh God...Julian Tavarez.

I'm happy with Papso going back to the pen. He was lights out last year and has been showing good Spring Training form apparently.

I wonder if with this move that Epstein doesnt have another card to play re: another pitcher for the rotation ?

Re: MLB 2007 - Say NO to Clemens

Sorry missed this earlier Red. From all reports this is a move that Papelbon made himself, so not sure that it's preempting another move from Epstein. That said though the Sox have alot more depth for the rotation than they had for the pen, especially with Timlin going down for a while, so the FO must be pretty happy right now. They'll give the 5th spot to Tavarez or more preferably Snyder and we can all wait and hope that Lester comes back looking as good as he did last year.

Just finished my fantasy draft too. Drew the short end of the straw picking 11th out of 12, but reckon I did OK, especially with Lee at pick 47

1 David Wright (3B, NYM)
2 Jason Bay (OF, PIT)
3 Johnny Damon (OF, NYY)
4 Derrek Lee (1B, CHC)
5 Chone Figgins (3B, OF, LAA)
6 Los Angeles Dodgers (P, LAD)
7 Mike Piazza (C, OAK)
8 Ray Durham (2B, SF)
9 Felipe Lopez (SS, WSH)
10 Luis Castillo (2B, MIN)
11 David Eckstein (SS, STL)
12 Cleveland Indians (P, CLE)
13 David Ross (C, CIN)
14 Rocco Baldelli (OF, TB)
15 Morgan Ensberg (3B, HOU)
