PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Suppose at the end of 2006 Terry Wallace said to his footy director- I need a big key back. Get me one.

What will you pay?

Whatever I have to but I need a key back to do a job every week. Get me one.

I’ve got just the bloke for you, went #4 in his super draft. Tested 2.9 for the 20m and 1.12 for the vertical. Six foot five. Fifteen stone. 22yo.

Get him.

Three rounds into season 2007 Graeme Polack has been destroyed one-on-one repeatedly and clearly can’t play key back. He is slow. And can’t use his body. So Wallet has to try to develop him and get some value out of him by playing him LMID so that he can get clear of the body contact and use his spring and good grip. (But of course, he can’t kick so after he’s take his third man up species we’re under pressure.) None of this is new.

Some coaches might get pissed off about this sort of thing. I guess Wallet was fuming; the bloke who made the call on it was his boss, Greg Miller. But one thing we know is that this decision was taken through the channels and that Gary March is across every detail of it.

Season 2007 establishes in the minds of the hierarchy that Graham Polak cannot do the job Miller recruited him for.

During a strategic meeting with March and Miller at the end of 07 Terry says to Miller- Get me a reliable conveyance to take the ball out of defence.

Miller says I got just the man for you. Would have gone #4 in his draft if he wasn’t father-sonned by West Coast. Beautiful kick. Can find the goals but is much better suited to a HBF where he can find space for his exquisite skills.

Sure. Go ahead, boss. Get him but no more than a third rounder. Sorry to go over your head, Greg you bungler, but Gary, since this bloke squandered pick 8 in a super draft on a bloke with no position and my job is on the line is it okay if I have pick 19 to get a bloke I know can do a job? I don’t think I can rely on Miller. Have you had a look at JON lately?

And Gary March says sounds bloody fair, Tezza and Hey Greg I’m interviewing your replacement tomorrow. Wanna tag along?

Sure it's long range speculation. But this is what I've been guessing at for a while now.
