One posters quote from above thread:  "Apart from the Stafford incident, I think their crowd had a bit to do with it. They've the loudest crowd in the league, especially down the Punt Rd end, and their crowd (esp. their grog squad) definitely lifted them.

Funny thing was, I was there with my brother and 4-year-old nephew, about five rows smack bang in front of their grog squad, noisy as hell, and my nephew slept through basically 3 quarters of it. Singing, chanting, beer drinking mayhem - absolutely dead to the world."

Good to see supporters of other clubs (in this case the Hawks) acknowledge that we are by far the loudest, passionate and most fanatical of any supporter base in the league.  Not the first comment i've seen on other footy forum sites stating similar facts.  One of the beautiful things about being a Tiger.  Our atmosphere is the best hands down.  I can only imagine if we ever became a powerhouse...   :o   The 'G' will literally shake.   ;)

GO TIGES!!!

I don't know what your vintage is Mikee, but back in the very late 70' & especially in the early 80's when the Tigers where 'pumping', I can assure you back then the stands literally shook when the Tigers of old strutted their stuff on the MCG. Fair Dinkum the bloody stands would vibrate, and as a young teenager it was awesome, real blood pumping stuff!

This is a true story - I know the architect that designed the Northern Section of the MCG (current new stand), and she told me that they used high tensile kevlar bolts the size of oak tree stumps purely to hold this thing upright, even after a nuclear holecaust, it'll still be standing. Anyway, the reason why this material was used was so it would withstand the force against the raging Tiger Army one day when they become a force. The whole bloody reason why they knocked down the Northern Stand in the first place is because the Tiger Army in the 60's to the 80's had completed snapped the bolts off the beams, it was a safety hazard. :banana

we shook the beams to breaking point in the 60's, 70's and 80's, now we just go nuts and tear the grandstand down out of frustration :hihi :hihi

I hate this statement. >:( Having lived through the 70's I can only think of us as a powerhouse. Keep thinking this is a bad dream. 26 years sure goes quick. Still can't believe damn Geelong, Footscray (Western Bulldogs) and St Kilda (heaven help us) are considered powerful teams. The world's gone mad I tells ya!!!!

Actually it explains why Victorian teams in general are doing so badly and the interstate teams are having a cake walk. No way Vic's got any chance of winning anything while we have to rely on that bunch of losers to fly our flag. :bash :frustration

I first noticed the Grog Squad in 1980 but they just seemed to be a couple of lads who liked their pint. Can anyone provide me with some more info about them?

our reserved seats last year were in M2, in between the grog squad and the offical cheer squad. I can tell you, the place goes off when we're on a roll. I especially remember in 2004, when Richo booted 10 against the Doggies at the G, the noise from the entire section was electrifying.

Oh yeah, and also when we roll that Scumwood, Carlscum, and Bummerscum!

I was there that day against the Hawks (like all other games). It was my sons birthday, and it was great seeing him go from depression to elation in a matter of minutes....

Ask The Foxhat when he's next around, he's one of the senior members of the crew. A lot are ex-cheer squad. Open and friendly bunch, do a lot of the aways as well as the Melbourne games.
