you said, in a smart arse way, that playing simmo at CHF was a futile exercise, it wasn't.
yes it was. wallace got it wrong when he tried to turn simmo into a kpp. anyone who has watched simmo over the yrs would have told you he was a very good ruckman being stuffed around by firstly connolly and then wallace last yr. i for one defended simmo last yr saying he had to be played in the ruck.
for me trying to play simmo kp was an admission that we lacked kpp forward and back what has wallace done about it so far. in effect polak and hughes he definately wasnt taking a tall last yr but hughes fell thru and his hand was forced.
I think Claw in regards to Simmo when he first came to the club he was carrying to much bulk.I agree with your assesment that Simmo is a far better player in the ruck than at CHF/F/Fwd because mainly it allows him the freedom to roam around the park to the teams best advantage.
In terms of team balance we can hope that Patto continues his steady process so we can get back to terry,s triangle. With Simmo and Patto resting in the pocket
I agree CJM.

I think you short-change Wallace and Miller a fair bit Clawster. If Connolly was stuffing Simmo around and we wanted him then it helped our cause. In 2005 Simmonds was too bulky and was not much chop either up forward or in the ruck. Wallace set him on a program to get fully fit and more mobile.... hence a very good 2006.

I believe the same scenario may well apply to Polak. He finished 2003 as runner-up in the AFL Rising Star...... no mean feat for a "tall". Reading between the lines it is not hard to guess that Connolly has not developed him as well as a good coach might. Freo extended Polak's contract for 2 years at end 2004. Miller/Wallace were sniffing round a year ago. Blind Freddy knows we are after a young defensive KPP. I reckon Connolly cracked the shiites and did not give Polak a fair go in the latter part of this season. Again it was to our advantage bargaining-wise.

Give Wallace a year with Polak, as with Simmonds, and we ought to see real benefits.

I still say it was Simmo at CHF was worth a go and considering where our side was at it was fair enough for TW to do it. Didn't work out, wasn't a disaster, but didn't work. Its all very well for geniuses to come on with total hindsight and say it was dumb or futile or whatever. I've watched Simmonds closely his whole career, and as an experiment it made sense to me.
